I think long delays of 2.5 hours is ridiculously long. This is why railway tourism will always battle. I'm sure the ticket price was also quite expensive.

Oh, how I long for the days back in 1971 when one could still Rida on a steam train from Beaufort West to Ladysmith on the way from Durban to Cape Town and vice versa!

Lovely to have the two of you on board again. Did Dusty go with you on the train ride? Stations are all so lovely and clean, can put others provinces to shame😢

We had a little family meeting the morning before we departed and Dusty said that he would be too scared if he's not in his usual spot in the back window of our vehicle. We were also worried that he might get lost in the chaos on the train, so we all decided he'll be safest at home. 🧸😍

Hello DustBugs: I have a good feeling about this steam train. Seeing the one they had in George to knysna has closed due to a landslide and damaged the tracks. So I am positive this one is here to stay. I also remember my army days of catching trains and flying SAA. Thanks again for sharing your story: REGARDS from East London.

It's called a container yard or depot, some trucks pull skeleton trailers, or flatbed with container hooks for safety, a 12m trailer can move 2 x 6m or 1x12m & U also get a 6m skeleton trailer for 6m only

A very different ride but extremely interesting. I know why you swapped the car for a train……… the passengers going with you became far too many to fit in the car. Thank you C & S.

Hi you two! What a pleasant surprise to see you back. And that on this intriguing train trip! It is so good to see a functional passenger railway (albeit with some delay) and a really beautiful old steam loco. I liked your visit to the loco where it was letting off steam. You managed to get me on board to share the ride in real time! I am glad Curtis that you could enjoy a Windhoek (or two ... ?) while you did not have to keep your eyes on the road. I had a Castle. The train ride is full of scenes and surprises so different from a road trip, but with a fascinating charm of its own. Can't wait for the market(?) and the return trip(?)! Don't fall off the train. Keep safe!

The train is quite high above the platform, so that was a little difficult for her knees, but she managed just fine in the end. 🥰 I'm happy to include prices, but that's as far as I'll go. The rest of the info is readily available online. 😁

The 'S' is for 'Season' and KZbin limits us to 12 seasons, so it'll always be S1 for all our travels within South Africa, regardless of the mode of transportation and we will always return to the long road at one point or another. We're saving the other seasons for other countries which are waiting to be explored. 😁

That loco looks well preserved. In the years late 1950"s and 1960's. there was a steam train service daily between Caledon and Cape Town. Used to ride on that train quite often when I was a kid. Bus sevice eventually took over the train service. Most amazing was when the train went over Sir Lowry's Pass.

Awesome. We share train love, so this episode is so awesome, thank you. My 1st trip was 7 in the train shoveling coal in a white safari suit (yep, we wore those in 1960s) for a mile or two. Last trip was also off to army. Ironically, they sent a steam train to Grahamstown to pull out the diesel train (Blue Train) when it couldn't pull the coaches out of town back in the late 70s 😂. We apparently have one of the steepest climbs in RSA all be it only a few km long ( Grahamstown) as such only steam locos came this way in the day. How we miss the trains.....this episode was super special, thanks 🙏🏻

Hullo! I missed you so nice to see you back. And a choo-choo! Wow! Couldnt be better. Now, nice glass of Chardonnay and let me enjoy the journey. Yes, I grew up in Bellville. And used to catch the train from Bellville station to Rondebosch to attend University. So this really brings back memories. Voortrekker road is a few streets further up. Bellville station has become a very dangerous place for crime. I remember it as being dirty, stinky and full of wierd people. There is a huge African market otherside the buildings. And a huge taxi rank, where there are often shootouts. The line between Cape Town and Bellville is still a very busy one. Thank you for a very meaningful tour
