Let's be clear. The issue is tipping. We need to make it illegal. They should be paid. Always. Transparently. Not up to the fucking whim of a high person ordering a single slice of cake from across NYC. We need regulation. Stop recommending tips. That puts the blame on the clients, which will never fix the issue. It only makes the corporations have wiggle room to abuse their employees.
@ElbowDeepInAHorse8 ай бұрын
This. Tipping should never be expected, a living wage should. Leveraging customer guilt to subsidize criminally low wages takes pressure off employers to change.
@amberallen78098 ай бұрын
I agree tipping is terrible, but NOT tipping someone out of protest isn't what is going to make it go away. It's just going to screw over the tipped worker. We need to push for legislation to outlaw tipped work/ close the loopholes in the minimum wage law. while we do that, we need to tip people. When the legislation gets passed and enacted, THAT is when you can stop tipping people.
@lytuy79528 ай бұрын
The problem is still not tipping but exploitative business models where workers get less pays when they get tips. Tips were supposed to show appreciation for the workers and should never have been a part of what the business counts for workers' wages. But for some reason that is acceptable and the ones showing appreciation is now the bad guys? If you ask me, that's identifying the wrong problem.
@hanifarroisimukhlis59898 ай бұрын
It's getting even worse. Apparently some restaurant will cut payment processing fee (about 3%) from tips. So uhh pay cash.
@mmoolloo8 ай бұрын
@@amberallen7809 The problem is that tipped workers won't be on your side when pushing for legislation to outlaw tipped work unless you stop tipping. Not tipping is the only way in which regular people can push for fair wages.

I do food delivery in Sweden for a huge delivery conglomerate that doesn't operate in the US, and it is a bit different here. First, we're actually employed by the company. We're entitled to sick pay, insured, and we get holiday allowance, but our schedule is little less flexible. We can still work as much as we want, but there are shifts to choose from and we're expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. There is no option for customers to tip through the app, and basically no one in Sweden carries cash. I get 0 tips. Instead, I get a wage that can easily accommodate my student lifestyle. US needs laws.

I don't really care, but in your magical land where we just pass a law to make gig work illegal door dash would just shutdown overnight. In what universe would making them take on 10x the overhead make any sense? Food delivery is a terrible idea to base an entire company around. This isn't new information. It will never be profitable unless you at least double the cost.

Unfortunately "employers should" is dead in the US - so if you don't tip, they don't get paid. So you definitely should tip when going there - as the only ones getting hurt by you not tipping, are the people who have the lowest wages! I've made it a habit to tip around 20% when I'm in the US. If it's a very large bill I might go as low as 15%, but it's rare - if the service has been horrible and they haven't excused it, I have on a very few occasions gone as low as 10%, and if the service has been above and beyond, as high as around 25% I have on a very few occasions even tipped nearly 30%. At home I only tip when the service has been above and beyond what can be expected - but here we have living wages and no one depends on tips to make it!

12:44 The fact that some people can't access food because they need a car in order to get food is an indictment on the way our cities are designed in America. Forcing the elderly to operate heavy machinery at literal break neck speeds through our public spaces, is horrifying. Many disabled people, poor people, old people, young people, cannot drive. There needs to be many more dense walkable cities in America like there used to be. Building with the assumption that everybody can just drive everywhere for every little reason is amazingly stupid and wasteful.

I don't know if everyone thinks we make bank from doordash themselves or what, but i don't make shit without tips and isn't even worth doing without them. And now they've changed stuff and made qualifying for high paying orders sooooo much harder and haven't actually increased the benefits any. Before it was just 150 orders done a month, 4.7*+ rating and 70% acceptance rating. Now it's 100 orders per *WEEK* 95% completion rating, 80% acceptance rating and 4.7*+ customer rating. And no one is made to tip and if you get under 95% completion rating they can just nuke your account out of existence. I was making $250-$300 a day just a couple of months ago, but since they made these new changes I'm lucky to make half of that and it pretty much just destroyed my job that i actually enjoyed having.

I'm not making that kind of money for months now and just to get back to making a decent amount, not even more than what I was making before, I have to go through all of this extra bullshit. Catering orders, which were how I made that kind of money, were not going to the students, those were going to actual adults who weren't living off mommy and daddy. Like I said they're now requiring 100 orders a week for one of the requirements up from 150 a month for it, just to keep making the same amount I was before with no extra benefits. And yeah exactly like the other guy said, that really isn't that much with the wear and tear on *MY* vehicle. My complaint was never with the way things were just a couple of months ago, it's the changes they've made to make the job now suck. I still dealt with some orders that didn't have tips or only tipped me 50 fucking cents and it wasn't a huge deal because that's not where most of my money came from anyways it was catering orders and I actually enjoyed my job, now *ALL* I get are those orders and I don't get any catering orders at all.

Actually knew everything about the delivery apps which is why I have never used it at all. Truly hope the rest of the population were smart enough to know the harms those apps have done.

I have never ever used a food delivery app. Maybe I just dont eat fast food enough, but the thought of getting semi-cold fast food for twice what it costs just turns me off to the whole thing.

Someone pointed out the pointlessness of delaying an upload in countries that don’t even have an HBO Max subscription service?
@ntnchua7 ай бұрын
I live in an Asian country and restaurants here just list higher prices on apps compared to actual menu prices, so they get the same amount after deductions. Everyone knows this and just views it as a fee that goes to the app.

On the subject of “Tip Culture”; this should not exist. Employers must pay living wages to all employees. When in the US, I tip as an act of charity, similar to the money I give to beggars.

Being a delivery driver made all the difference when I was between jobs, wanted to save for trips, and also make money while on a trip where I could just turn on the app and also see a bunch of an unfamiliar city. Also, now that I live in LA, we get a guaranteed hourly wage around $20 and the Dash branded city bikes with an enclosed basket are only $1.75 to rent. I've never felt it was some oppressive trap but definitely the easiest way to get guaranteed money the day you need it.

I am surprised no mention was made of "tip-baiting" - making an order giving a generous tip in hopes of preferential treatment in delivery, and then after it's delivered cutting the tip severely (some cases to no tip at all).

We were very heavy users of delivery during the pandemic, but we have completely stopped. The cost was just too high and the mistakes being made by both restaurants and drivers increased significantly. I've had missing items, wrong preparation and delivery of someone else's order. Where I live, there are no bike deliveries, it is all in cars, and I could see in the app that the drivers were making multiple pickups (with waits at each pickup) and multiple deliveries. Having food sit in their car for 45+ minutes is unacceptable.

with all due respect nobody should tip. people should get paid decent wages period, don't ditch the responsibility of paying workers on the customer.

Every negative review on uber eats either was this: - the store messed up and i can open sealed bags to double check - i took too long to find them in the apartment complex. One time tacobell messed up the order and i offered to go back to the store and get the missing item, but he still gave a negative review.

The only positive that came from Covid was door dash came to our little town. Then Wal-Mart started competing with delivery as well. For elderly, this was literally a life saver in our anti-vax state, groceries and meals and laundry soap they didn't have to risk their lives to get. For disabled and folks without vehicles, it gets groceries and over the counter meds to you without having to haggle with cousin Bubba, in this town with no public transport. For folks commuting or working two jobs to make ends meet, it means you can get a meal delivered after work +two hours on the road, or on that twelfth day in a row while longing for day sixteen when you're off from one job. It also filled the gap for work between the state cutting off unemployment earlier than any other state and your workplace not re-opening and finding another job that wasn't at McDonald's [which is still paying sheet wages here]. It's a crazy world that makes no sense and is so freaking imbalanced between have lots and have nothing it's a wonder any of us don't long for a slice of cake every day! [tho not tipping is just demonic and should make you choke on the luxury imho]
@gorillaguerillaDK8 ай бұрын
Heck, while there's still a great distance between the "have a lot" and "have nearly nothing" here where I live - one can at least make a living wage working on McD. 37 hour work week. 5-6 week paid vacation. Paid sick leave (including child's first day sick) Paid Parental leave. We have the world's highest taxes, but aside from medicine, dental care, chiropractor, physiotherapy, and psychologist - all healthcare is universal. The others are subsidized and medicines have progressing subsidiaries, so if you have expenses for more than around 600 $ per year, you don't pay anymore. If you have certain conditions physiotherapy can become part of the universally covered healthcare, and some people can apply for a heavily subsided dental program where they pay 300 $ a year and then no matter what needs to be done, it gets done - but nothing fancy... Add to this, higher educations are tuition free, students only pay for copy paper, books, PC, etc... We even pay them a 1K $ state grant each month as long as they study, and they can get a State Financed low rent Student Loan - the conditions for the grant and loan are that they focus on their studies, so if they take a month during their summer vacation where they work their ass off earning money, they can't get the grant that month. Oh, and we have subsidiaries for housing as well so low income earners can afford living in a nice appartment. BUT, we have some serious high fees for buying a car. This isn't much of a problem if you live in the city you work in or live in a city that is well connected with public transportation to the city or town you work in. But if you live in a small rural community - it's very hard to do it without a car. Of course the further out you live, the cheaper are the houses usually also - but still.... During COVID we also had several companies starting delivery services. And some had to stop again because they alienated our labour unions. We have some strict laws that make it harder for businesses who wanna use the "private contractor" loophole instead of employing people under regular rules. Uber had a very short lifespan here for that same reason. But one of the retail franchise made a brilliant move. They made an app - where people could sign up to help each other out, so customers could sign up to bring goods to other customers in their area, (so they're volunteers, and get a fixed rate of money (maybe 7 or 8 $ or so), as a supplement for gas). The service is open to everyone as long as someone will bother, but it's mostly elderly, disabled, and people who for some reason have a hard time dealing with being out in public where all the so called "normal" people roam freely. The store packs the goods, so all the one who sign up for it has to do, is pick it up. The store only charges the customer for the gas money - I think it's a brilliant idea. Oh, and I haven't yet figured out why there aren't more smart Americans who've started emigrating to Europe - especially not if they hold education where there's a high demand in several European countries....
