We don't sail into a slip. It can be done but only under the most ideal circumstances and if anything goes wrong it can be a mess. Rule #1: Do No Harm. Not just to your boat, but to anyone's boat. Very hard to stop an 18,000lb boat. You can drop a stern anchor or get a line around a piling but if you miss or have a hiccup then you were negligent and demonstrated lousy seamanship. That said I have sailed big boats up to a T head many times when the conditions were right--breeze coming from slightly ahead and nothing down wind to hit. I have sailed a J24 into slip because it was easy to stop at only 3,000 lbs. I have routinely sculled the Far Reach into and out of her slip in flat water with minimal current. The safest way is to sail the boat close, if the marina permits it, and anchor. Then row a line ashore and warp the boat in. That way you maintain positive control the entire time. That is the proper seaman like way to do it.
@harbourdogNL2 жыл бұрын
@@FarReachVoyages Thanks for the very comprehensive reply (am enjoying your channel!). And yes, Rule #1 is why I was curious about how you manage tying up with no motor. Are you using the anchor windlass and winches when you warp in?
@FarReachVoyages2 жыл бұрын
@@harbourdogNL Typically I can haul the boat around hand over hand using warps. But I have used the windlass to warp over to a mooring ball and also haul off a face dock so I could raise sails and get underway clear of the dock. Pretty standard stuff in the old days. Not hard but takes planning and patience. I would never encourage sailors to go engineless. It's like single-handing. It's something that has call to you.

What a wonderful job on the Cape Dory Alberg 36. I sailed similar trips on my 1962 Alberg 35. The CD 36 had a little more water line and beam, but similar. Lost her in Hurricane Andrew, 1992 cat 5! Very tough boat. Got a Kelly Peterson 44 after Andrew. Sailed her from E Caribbean to Panama, then Pacific. Love your modifications. Really well done. Now out ❤of Oriental NC. Maybe see you some time. Will subscribe. Love your style. Fair winds.

That was great, the boat looks wonderful. It must be nice feeling not to have to deal with an engine. I used to sail in and out of the marina with my Endeavor 32, I'd have to wait on the wind to clock around just right to do it but, it was fun and a challenge. Better to go sailing then wait on engine repairs. You two make a good sailing team, keep it going. Peace and my the Lord be with you. ⛵

I have been following you since you started work on your boat. I was surprised to see your video channel in my feed, I didn't think you would go the KZbin route. Since beginning to follow your blog I have bought and refit my own boat a '83 Pacific Seacraft Orion MKII (27'). In June I sailed solo from Ensenada Mexico to Nuku-Hiva in the Marqueses a 35 day passage. I then sailed on to the Tuamotus Islands and Tahiti another 750 NM. I will continue sailing the Society Islands after the Cyclone season starting about end February. Perhaps Fiji after that? Your work and dedication to your boat project was an inspiration, thank you. Thanks Ben. That's a heck of a voyage you are on. Well done. I had shot a couple hundred hours of GoPro film over last three voyages. It was just sitting on the computer not doing anyone any good. Finally, decided to edit them and share thinking others might enjoy seeing that you don't have to have an exotic boat or deep pockets to have an offshore adventure in a strong, safe, reasonably fast boat. Enjoy the South Pacific....

Wow @ 6:56 that interior looks so so nice! Really came together. -- QUESTION -- Is that a squeak free interior? Just looks so solid and perfectly put together that it may be the first silent sailboat??
@FarReachVoyages Жыл бұрын
LOL. I don't know about that. My companion way ladder squeaked a bit when I was standing on it in moderate to large swells for a while. But I fixed that. It's a fairly quiet boat.
@michaeltca3103 Жыл бұрын
@@FarReachVoyages ..understood. But what about the floors? So many sailboats, even expensive ones, seem have endless squeaks with every step they take - like an old house. Sort of a pet peeve of mine as a youtube viewer. Not sure why that happens so much.
@FarReachVoyages Жыл бұрын
@@michaeltca3103 Floors actually support the sole. Real floors tie the garboards and keel together on a wood boat. Well, most cabin soles and the floors that support them are wood. And wood swells and contacts with humidity. Our walnut planks swelled by the time we made it to the Caribbean on the first voyage. They squeaked a bit. I'd plane them down with a hand plane and then they would swell a little more. They squeaked and we did it some more till we got it right. Probably took a voyage and a half. Probably most people don't know how to fix that and they get used to it don't notice it. I don't like it and we work hard to avoid it.
@michaeltca3103 Жыл бұрын
@@FarReachVoyages ..there must be so many aspects to getting it just right - now temperature changes something as fundamental as a floor - good grief... It seems like it will take a lifetime to perfect a sailboat, No wonder you devoted so much time to keeping things simple.

Would love to join you in a world cruise on that sailboat. Simply stunning sailboat. Do you think it could traverse the world in anything resembling a reasonable state of comfort?
@FarReachVoyages Жыл бұрын
Offshore sailing in a small boat is not reasonably comfortable unless the weather and sea state are cooperating. While the FR is a lot more comfortable in a sea way than a flat bottomed fin keeler comfort is relative. The amount of motion in a small boat beam reaching in 8-10' seas is astonishing....
@michaeltca3103 Жыл бұрын
@@FarReachVoyages ..well I will join you "virtually" if you can record it all. Interestingly, from what I have read online, no one has yet recorded a complete circumnavigation and posted it online. It is one of those things that seems very doable given today's technology (which I know you hate), but wouldn't it be something to be the first do that? I will help sponsor you with some camera money if you commit to doing it?
@FarReachVoyages Жыл бұрын
@@michaeltca3103 I'll pass on that one and leave it up to someone with more interest in tech. I think there are offshore race boats live streaming. That might be a better approach. Just the little I am doing now takes more time than most people might think. Plus, viewers want drama and that's the opposite of what I am trying to achieve....
