Note at 2:36, pipeling is NOT parallel processing, it is concurrent processing. Concurrent processing means running tasks one after the other. For example, one task may be started and a second may start after the first one, but before the first one has finished executing. Parallel processing is when multiple tasks are carried out at the same time.
@MarwaMarwa-dg5oc2 жыл бұрын
aw nooo, a question came up asking you to define pipelining and I put down parallel
@leopettecrew56952 жыл бұрын
@@MarwaMarwa-dg5oc damn that sucks. yeah i thought it sounded wrong, so i did some last minute digging and found a mark scheme that gave concurrent, but not parallel. keep your head up though, it'll only be one mark plus it's "generous marking" so you might get away with it.
@MarwaMarwa-dg5oc2 жыл бұрын
@@leopettecrew5695 a silly mistake, but eh just a mark, as you said. thanks for your comment ✌
@s1perry2 жыл бұрын
It kind of depends on the context. If you are talking about CPU architecture where you are performing the stages of the FDE cycle at the same time, then yes, pipelining would count as a simple form of parallel processing for the exam board. You also have the idea of pipelining as a common computing technique where the output of one process can be fed into another, e.g. the classic UNIX pipeline with examples like ls -l | grep key | less.
@leopettecrew56952 жыл бұрын
@@s1perry Maybe I'm just confused, but what you described in the video sounded like parallel, I agree. Fine line between the two to be fair. [ Taken from the A Level 2021 paper 1 - OCR ]: Question 1 b.) "The CPU uses pipelining to improve efficiency. Explain what is meant by the term 'pipelining'. [3]" Mark scheme states: • Concurrent processing of multiple instructions • One instruction can be fetched while previous is being decoded… • And the one before is being executed. • In case of a branch pipeline is flushed. • Increases speed of execution As a side note, I hate exams, expescially computer science. Love the subject immensely, but I've used so many revision resources and so many seem to contradict themselves it's hard to learn what's right and what's wrong somewhere else. Regardless, I found the video to be really helpful. Hope you come out with one for paper 2 soon! Also would love to know your thoughts on the first paper...
