The Uvalde shooter harassed girls online with threats of raqe and murder, and when they complained about it they were told to "just ignore him" and "it's only words", and no action was taken despite a well-established connection between misogynistic threats and harassing or "creepy" (Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter) behavior or expressions and school shooters. Despite that clear pattern, they ignored him until a Border Patrol team took him down. Just like they'll ignore the next one.
@zachgoldwater9577 ай бұрын
It's a hard thing to police. Virtually everyone, especially children, have made thinly-veiled (or otherwise) threats over the internet. Saying "it's only words" may seem irresponsible in retrospect, but they had like a 99.99% chance of being right. It's not like news outlets are constantly reporting on stories where "someone made a threat, and then nobody did anything, and then nothing happened", but that exact scenario happens all the time.

@@jturtle5318 I'm not able to find any source that the threats were made towards girls he personally knew from school. They’d been seen by strangers, many of whom had never met him and had found him only through the social messaging and video apps that form the bedrock of modern teen life." I think the threats were something that only really occurred online with strangers, and they only really came to light after the event. They were fairly explicit, although I'm not sure they were exceptional; it's been a while since I've been in high school but I do remember me and my peers making some pretty egregious jokes about you-know-what (rhymes with hull bootings). I am definitely not alone in that I had to re-check the 'date' of this full episode as 2015 when it came to "the internet" portion. Sadly, it's only become worse with the online harassment for women (and the law still hasn't truly caught up and the police are still absolutely useless and traumatising). We now have to contend with AI deep fakes. The younger generation is really screwed up (and there's actual suicides happening because of it) due to "people" scamming them to send pornographic photos to the scammer/blackmailer. Plus the old line "date better men" is still be trotted out to women when the most abusive men "appear" to everyone else "as a good guy". Oh... and lastly... let's not forget "just don't send nudes" when in this day and age you don't even have to send anything with the advent of AI deep fakes.

You know, I actually like the idea of a male figure and a female figure sharing a dollar bill. We should do that for all of the bills. Each dollar value and coin should have legitimate versions for both a male and female figure. That would be a great way to accomplish equality. However, while that's nice to think about in theory, there would probably be issues in practice. For instance, the female version of the $1 bill would probably only end up being worth 93 cents...

I actually agree with the news anchors sentiment; that the best way to prevent this is by not taking and sharing these pictures. We SHOULD teach young people NOT to do this. It's not victim blaming, it's preventive action. Obviously, it's awful that it happens, but people that do this don't really give a shit about other peoples feelings. It's great that laws are created to punish this, however, such photos can be impossible to remove from the internet and when uploaded, the damage is done. Even if the uploader gets convicted.
