In this diy woodworking video, we continue to construct the timber frame cabin in the woods of the Smoky Mountains using both modern and traditional tools with a break for felling trees to clear space for the outdoor kitchen, and will use the lumber from the dangerously leaning yellow pines to mill 2x4 lumber for the inside and outside walls of the cabin. It is coming along well and the trees would have been cut anyway due to the proximity of the homestead dwellings. Follow us through the complete building videos to the final stage of the cabin, outdoor kitchen, permanent base camp and future barn for the tractor and animals.

Another enjoyable video and great team work with your daughter. Being a paramedic i have no doubt you will have seen way more accidents than i ever will do, i was in construction and saw more than enough though which is why i make the following comment. 37.10 in the video, your daughter is walking backwards on a bank whilst you maneuver the logs to get the 2nd strap attached, your daughter gets her foot caught just for a split second, thankfully and obviously all went well this time, but it only would've taken a split second longer of her not getting her feet in the correct place and she would have had those logs on her, broken ankle or leg in the making. I haven't pointed this out to make you look bad, but for point of reference in future doing these activities, the person on the ground dictates the pace you work not the person on the machine, 99 times out of 100 when these accidents have happened on sites it has been the machine moving faster than the ground worker, when the ground isn't even ? The ground worker requires just that little longer to get themselves set properly mate. Granted i have seen way worse accidents with steel beams than wood but wood in big lengths or amounts can equally cause some nasty crush or break injuries. I wouldn't want you to have a family story that gets brought up every get together that you never get to hear the end of :)

Copy that. I do remember that. I was curious why she stuck her hands out because I was actually about six feet from her. I think when the bucket moved it startled her. Anyway, good call and appreciate all your comments. Thanks

Good morning SMO!! That was a NOICE "gun show" up at The Outpost .... fellin' trees, splitting rounds... working it and woodchuckin' - all of my favorite things to do in this world. You had the mighty Husky & mini-Stihl a buzzin' and the ever-so-handy-dandy 'Bota doing all the heavy lifting, along with your daughter lending a very helping hand, of course!! I'm thinking you are a solid candidate for the Farm & Ranch Calendar - May 2020 edition!! The making of a perfect day, up at The Outpost. I am loving this video and very much looking forward to whatever the next 'build' is.... outdoor kitchen? back at the cabin for framing? Doesn't matter... just looking forward to it and the next vid!! Getting swamped out up here in NewEngland so I hope the sun is shining in your universe. Keep on keepin' on and we'll see you again real soon! >> happy trails

Dude, try strapping a couple bungee cords around your logs (one near top, one near bottom) before you split them. It will keep all the pieces together so you don't have to stoop and pick up so much. Hope it helps!

When do you anticipate finish building your house? Reason I asked, you are starting another project ((outdoor kitchen) that will take time away from the house build. Or maybe you are in no great hurry, just asking.

Part of what I cut down will go toward the framework. Everything comes off the property pretty much. Besides, I need a break from one to the other. I can’t film the process of milling all the time. It’s boring and I can’t show progress.

Are you sure thats a mountain laurel? Looks like a rhododendron.
@SmokyMountainOutpost
@SmokyMountainOutpost 4 жыл бұрын
Well both are quite similar sometimes referred to as calico bush. Hunters in the are say “that hog was hunkered down in the laurel thicket.” The larger bush like I showed on video. Many species but your correct in rhododendron. Just not used much around here to refer to it as such.
@cabinman
@cabinman 4 жыл бұрын
@@SmokyMountainOutpost lol I figured it could be a slip of the tongue or maybe something else. I have a lot of mountain laurel on my place so I'm very familiar. Plus being a certified arborist for 15 years and studying dendrology might and given me an edge of identification a little. ;) The easiest way to tell them apart is the size of the leaf. Rhodo has larger leaves about 6 to 8 inches and laurel has small leaves maybe 3 to 4 inches. Generally speaking. I'm enjoying your work and look forward to the cabin walls and interior!
