I feel like this video has raised a lot of questions 😂 Yes, I have a compass 😅 in fact, I have three. Knowing in which direction I was riding was not the problem here. The problem was finding the right track that would go in the direction I wanted, and the quality of that track. Unfortunately, a compass and a paper map don’t tell you that (besides, if anyone saw the bookshop in the video where I could find such detailed map please tell me and I’ll drive back for it 😜).. when you are hiking this works, but not when you ride a motorcycle.. Just riding West could send me straight into an impassable lagoon, swamp or up a rocky cliff for that matter. Plus, I would create another new track in a National Park which is exactly what I was trying to avoid here. Using my drone to find the track is also a great idea but doesn’t work in reality. I have 4 batteries so I can fly the drone about 8 times with that. My reach is only 400 meters and the higher I fly it, the less detail of the track I see on my tiny phone screen. It takes me about half hour to fly the drone once. Given the distance I have to cover, in limited time because of afternoon rains, it just doesn’t work.. Trust me, I have thought this through 😅

Anyone who thought that they could do better has definitely not been in the same situation. I have, you did really well to navigate your way out of what could have been a disaster. I got lost then ran out of petrol in Ethiopia despite 2 extra cans like you, no tent, minimal food but OK for water. Nobody at all passed for 2 days. I lost a good friend who lay undiscovered after crashing for 4 days in 1999 also in similar circumstances. Armchair critics drive me mad.

As an ex motorcyclist (worn out knees), you inspire me to be adventurous once my surgery is eventually done. You manage to create the sense of adventure and very real danger you encounter. I find myself being moved by the beauty and remoteness of the locations you find yourself in. My wife, who would opt for a relatively safe and comfortable journey, is enthralled by your videos. Looking at the tracks on the satellite images, it's clear they all split and join again further along the road. There aren't many real options, like the guy said just pick a track and head towards those mountains. Having that said, and looking at your route, you definitely took the most interesting route through the canyon. It seems most cars go around it, but then they miss the beautiful rock formations along that little stream. Good stuff!

I really like your comment answering all the obvious questions. Apart from those, this was an extremely interesting segment. First, the scenery and landscape is almost surreal, and has a beautiful austerity. The scale of that immense plane or plateau is quite arresting. Second, I could detect a few moments of concern -- the sort of concern that sharpens your senses as you ride. The challenge of this segment is what really makes it so captivating. I know quite well the sensation of finding your way when it appears you are lost, and the satisfaction that follows after you locate a place to rest. This segment took us all through that little emotional journey. I could feel the hair on the back of my neck raise just slightly, as there was a whiff of anxiety. In one of my books, I wrote this line: "Walking in circles is what we do when we are certain of our destination, but ignorant of our surroundings." The segment proves me to have been correct. The attention to your surroundings, to the tracks in the gravel and sand, and your trust in instinct, led you to a room with a view. Terrific. Cheers.

@@tinldw I am not a chiropractor, there are good ones and bad ones like in every profession. Also for some things they are good for others they are not, so we have to pick and choose. Anyhow, I stand by my massage comment :) Noraly for sure had to be tired after all that shaking! Glad there were no broken bones that was a very bad place to fall and break something. I never saw it but I think she keeps a satellite tracking device that can send SOS messages.

Luis Braz-Ruivo there are and always were professions that do no good. Some chiropractors would cripple or kill people, the others may mostly damage you financially and only to a limited extent physically, but none would be of any help. They're like psychics, astrologers, homeopaths, etc. but more dangerous. Sure, if you're well built and healthy then you're far less likely to get any serious problems. But it won't be because they're good. It'll be because you're too tough to break lol

Notlay, in the future always remember that you have a drone with you. Take it up to see over the ridges. Which track leads to the main road or a village. They are very handy for tough stops, that people generally don't think to use them.

I remember from her first episode that there is a limit in altitude for flying a drone. So, at nearly 5000 meters it will be impossible to do that.

Ciao.

@@p.a.f.mitasol8071 To the contrary, decades of experience on the back roads of Nevada has shown me how easy it is to get lost with a map and a compass. As a licensed aviator I have a more-than-usual experience with navigation. Even a 7.5 minute topo map can be useless at times.
