Join Barefoot Doctors Sailing as we move into Day 3 of the Atlantic crossing as the storm eases off but large seas continue to run. We are faced with several breakdowns with the AIS, the steering and auto helm needing attention and we share other interesting ways to protect the boat.
We also share our experiences with our new Hollyland Solidcom C1 Pro headsets which we use with the steering repair, the Oxley sail hoist and up the mast in high winds and waves....
If you want to know what it is like to sail 8000 miles across open ocean, jump on board with us!
Our exciting Patreon option from only $3 per week, will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates on positions and daily logs on the Atlantic crossing as well as join us for sailing events in Gocek, Turkey (Sept 2023), Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS

John. FANTASTIC series!!! Thank you for doing this! A couple of questions: 1. The solar panel instal on this 50 is beautiful! Are those raised glass panels with ventilation underneath? Who did the install? 2. You mentioned that you had a similar steering issue on your 50. Is this something a new 50 owner should deal with up front? Could you add some locktight to avoid the issue for good? 3. I know you built and operated a lightweight performance cat and then owned a Leopard 50. In heavy weather, like you had here for the first 3 days, which boat would be more comfortable for your wife? An Outremer 52 ( or similar performance cruiser) or a heavier Leopard 50, and why? Thanks again, not only for the great content, but also for always answering the hundreds of questions you must get. All the very best! Dave.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567

Hi Dave, 1. The solar panels were done in Cape Town by DRM 2. It is just loose Allen screws that need to be tightened and locktite used... You're right about that! 3. A heavier boat is certainly more comfortable to ride through heavy seas as the light boats bounce up and down with every wave and even in the 50, we were bouncing but it wold have been worse in a light cat... So the Leopard 50 is undoubtedly more comfortable than an Outremer or my performance cat... Regards, John

Hey Jon and Eli... It was great to get the update from Eli today. Good to see you at home safe and enjoying life. I love your backyard with the beach and lagoon. I once stayed at a Airbnb in Sawtell which backed onto the beach. WOW it is SO nice to be able to walk out the back door and onto the beach for a morning stroll! You are very lucky. Once thing my science degree has taught me it is is best to keep you lines (sheets) up off the ground, where the salt and and dirt or grime can be walked into the fibres by stepping on them. I would also be continually going around and wetting down the sheets and lines as often as possible. Why do I say keep them wet? Well salt when it dries becomes crystalline as you could well imagine. Now go to the kitchen and eat some salt crystals that have not been ground down. Se how hard they are? They are 2.0 on Mohs hardness scale. Hence, NaCl crystals act like small saws in between the fibres and cuts the fibres in microscopic fashion. So keeping them wet stops the salt from becoming crystalline. If I had enough sheets on my boat I'd rotate them all once a week and give them a proper wash in a washing machine or bucket with a mild soap, but that's just me. As you can imagine, this helps keep the salt loading in the fibres low. The other advantage of keeping them wet (if possible, obviously some line can not be kept wet - such as the lines in the mast) is that the stretching factor of the line/sheet stays the same. If your lines becomes dry and you tension a line for a certain operation, then when it rains or becomes wet for some other reason, then you often find you have to reset that line/sheet for that slack that is often found once it is wet. Keeping the line wet solves that problem. Anyway, I love all the extra knowledge that Paul has. I'd also be inclined to put swimming noodles (the ones with the hole in the middle) on the Seagull striker up front or anywhere that the sails rub, which has the advantage of also making them more comfortable to lean against when anchoring or setting sails. They would need to be removed occasionally to allow for inspections of course. You'd have the slit down so that any water ingress can drain away. Anyway, I' love you work as always. Fair 💨and following 🌊for the ⛵and 👨‍👨‍👧‍👦.

Ive never sailed with AIS but it should follow vhf propagation rules, distance (miles) = 1.4 × square root of antenna height (ft.). 64 ft. Mast =~ 11 miles. Add to that the other vessel. 100 ft freighter =14 miles. Total = 25 miles.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that formula Lee - I never knew that… AIS seems to use the same aerial but different frequencies and is much shorter distance covered for some reason… Then the added complexity is that the ships with internet connection transmit larger scale info about the further away boats that we pick up! Really good system but we seem to only see Ais of other yachts at 6-8 miles usually…
@leeoldershaw956

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I think AIS should have its own antenna unless there's a sharing device. AIS is in the same marine VHF band.
@leeoldershaw956
@leeoldershaw956 Жыл бұрын
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 It appears there are various types of AIS antenna "splitters". The ones for AIS transponders are considerably costlier than for AIS receivers. I would think Leopard would have a proper installation but you're never sure. There may be a cable or antenna problem. The ranges I mentioned are correct. 20 miles between two 50 ft mast sailboats I.E.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
We certainly have had antenna problems and Leopard only fit a Raymarine AIS as an option but only using the same aerial with the splitter so if you want a separate antenna, you have to do it as aftermarket. I think that aerial must be Marks problem...
@leeoldershaw956
@leeoldershaw956 Жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 They might have used a splitter for an AIS receiver instead of an AIS transceiver/transponder. That would likely cause problems with the marine VHF radio also.

Hi, I must have lost track of the boats you own. I thought you had a Leopard 45 in the Med and are building a Portofino 52 in aluminum. Is this Leopard 50 also yours ? What are your plans for all the Catamarans ?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 11 ай бұрын
Hi Wine Guy! No this L50 is not mine was I am just helping Mark deliver it to the USA - great experience opportunity to sail with Paul Badenhorst with 285,000+ sea miles under his belt. So the Leopard 45 that we now own will be sold before the Portofino 52 is completed so we aim to sell it (L45) about Sept/Oct next year and then will take ownership of the 52 about Dec 24/Jan25. Hope that makes sense!
