So I am sort of new to bonsai and saw a great deal on a tree. Bought, brought it home and chopped it to see if I could make a great tree. To my horror, it's a Norway maple and my research made me want to cry. Then I saw your video. I've watched a LOT of bonsai videos, and none have made me laugh so hard. I'm sticking with this fuckin thing now and have subbed. Looks like I'm not the only Jeff with one of these things who is going to fight disappointment. Keep up the videos mate. They're brilliant.
@BostonBonsaiIdiot2 жыл бұрын
Well I'm giving this comment a big ol' FUCK YEAH! And I soon as you said the word "horror," I knew that somehow a Norway Maple would be involved. Here's the trick going forward: lower your expectations. BOOM. "Problems" solved. You'll read plenty about how these things are a lost cause, but most honest practitioners will at some point in their lives admit that any experience is good experience. Orthodoxy only leads to frustration and disappointment. Make it your own. I've come to love all my crappy Norway maples in time. Great video my friend! @ 3:54 You said that maybe the tree grew through a fence. Often times nursery trees are dug and placed in a burlap bag, and then place in a metal basket, then saved for sale. The basket should be removed at the time of planting, At the risk of starting a fight with any landscape company owners, time is money, and planting crews don't remove the basket to save time. Maybe that is what you found.? This tree is looking great! Thanks for sharing it with us, can't wait to see more!
@BostonBonsaiIdiot3 жыл бұрын
Yo Gerrett! That would add up IF NOT for the fact that this tree was almost certainly a weed tree. The tree was dug from one of Boston's "Urban Wilds," public land that is managed by the city, and the guy that I asked permission from to collect the tree was more than happy that I was removing an invasive norway maple. He mentioned they'd been trying to manage some in that area for years, and this one (along with another that I collected the following year) were clearly cut down, but not fully out of commission. HOWEVER, this part of the property abuts a private yard, the owner of which could have very well planted this tree a long time ago (though I doubt it based on its size). More likely I think is that it self sowed and grew up along side a fence or just some trash (the area has signs that it was a dump at some point). ...so how's THAT for a bunch of rambling nonsense that you never asked for!??! Cheers bro!

@Boston Bonsai Idiot Sorry, I forgot that sycamore can mean different things. I meant a sycamore maple. You mean why not CHOP IT higher? Good question and here’s my answer: because with this guy, there’s never been die-back. I can trim right to a bud and, so long as I let it grow out, the chop will be fully healed. This is what I did with my last chop and the wound is just about gone. It’s pretty incredible and I owe it all to the crazy vigor of the Norway maple. I don’t plan on letting this one go as long and thick however, so there will be a more visible scar for longer, but either way I’m not worried about dieback. Cheers Jared, thanks for the comment!
