Great video.. Thanks. FYI.. no, they did not use the fire truck to replenish the tenders.... they ran hoses (that they carry in the Art Lockman Tool car [1st one behind the EMD 4015]) across the street and replenished directly from the fire hydrant, "kitty corner" from the grain elevator bins. Also, FYI.... at the 25:13/14 mark you mentioned to whoever you were talking to (when the 4014 was moving on to the main to leave out), in regards to the steam coming from the cylinder cocks, that "he's probably doing it for a show for the people"..... no, it's not a show for the people... it's to bleed off built up condensation in the cylinders before widening out the throttle, and also to reduce any chance of wheel slip of the drivers which can be damaging to the main and side rods as well as the driver "tires" and rails. After sitting overnight, and the boiler pressure allowed to drop down, the steam is "wet" and needs to be bled off... you can also tell when there is still too much "wet steam" (not "dry" and really hot from working), when Ed whistled the crossing and the whistle (Nathan 3 chime) had that "sagging / dropping off" sound to it.... compared to very sharp and powerful as when it arrived the evening before. Thanks again for the video... good shots.

At around 25:00 the comment was made about letting the steam out of the cylinders for a "show". That is not the case. Steam will condense in the locomotives cylinders when the locomotive has not moved (called standing) for sometime. Water does not compress like air does and when the piston comes to either end of it's stroke, the condensed water in the cylinder (if it displaces more volume than the gap between the piston and cylinder head) can and will break the cylinder heads causing a cylinder blowout. The only way to get the condensed water out of each cylinder, after what is called "standing", is to open the relief petcocks on the bottom ends of each cylinder. When the throttle valve is opened slightly, the steam blows out the water and pre-heats the cylinders in an effort to help reduce the amount of condensation that occurs.

Actually, you may get your wish someday. I worked on the Mojave Sub as a locomotive engineer during the 1970's and the curves on that mountain are around 10 degrees. The UP 4000's were designed to take curves as sharp as 20 degrees, so I don't believe the 4014 would have much of a problem there. Remember, SP ran it's big AC-12 Cab Forwards (4-8-8-2's) over that mountain on a regular basis. Lineside clearences probably are still OK. Whether or not the 4014 comes to Tehachapi would probably have more to do with the trip route they have planned.

@organbuilder2723 жыл бұрын
@@JAllyFarms Not likely. Those rails are owned by Boston & Maine. Engines from Union Pacific can not use them without some very special situation. B&M must give track rights to Union Pacific AND, it is unlikely that the track is strong enough to take the 600 tones of engine/tender. EXAMPLE - AMTRAK will not allow ANY privately owned locomotives on their rails. That shut down so many locomotives from track usage even if they paid the propriator for track rights This is why there are many fully operational locomotives standing in museums instead of rolling on the track.

Inconsiderate people just step in front of another guy's camera. No courtesy, and not even caring. "That steam" is NOT to show for the people. Water in a locomotive is precious, not for shows. AT - 23:24 He is heating up the drive cylinders, clearing condensation from the cylinders and steam lines. Why is there no chuffing. Are they opening the throttle just a carck for show and let the diesel start the train moving. Big Boy is either terribly quiet or it's not pulling.
@JAllyFarms3 жыл бұрын
I think they wanted to give people a show to look at it but I dont think it has the power it once had
@organbuilder2723 жыл бұрын
@@JAllyFarms Clearing the steam lines and cylinders of condensate is standard procedure for ALL locomotives. It is NOT for show regardless of what you think. It is to protect the cylinders from water hammer, which, if it occurred, would either blow one or both ends off the cylinders or bend the piston rod like a noodle. Go look at other locomotives starting up. They ALL blow out the cylinders - ALL and it is not for show at all. As far as power - The original specs called for 350 Pound per square inch operating pressure. The present engine runs at 300 pounds. That reduced the draw-bar power by 400 to 600 HO. Don't underestimate this engine's ability to pull the same loads as it did in 1950. Big Boy was designed to pull very long coal trains up over mountains. It did the job quite well until the bean counters decided that 4 diesels should be used to replace one Big Boy. It is NOT a maintenance nightmare as some fool suggested. It is essentially a new engine with far better automatic lubricating systems than the original had. Yes, like all fire-tube boilers, it must be re-tubed every 15 years by law. But then, in less time than that, diesel engines are torn down and overhauled. Like all machinery on the farm, it much be maintained to PREVENT failure - not wait for failure to occur before doing something about it. The beating ALL steam locomotives took during WW-II that had to go without proper maintenance owing to wartime schedules brought the cost of service to excess when the war was over. By then, diesels were reliable enough to replace the worn out stock. You are a farmer, not a RR man. You still understand maintenance and obsolesence. Educate yourself before making comments about how a locomotive operates. Do you really think they put a whole lot of valves and piping on the engine to show off??? Do you really think those engines were built to show? Learn about locomotives. It may become a fascinating thing for you.

A couple of years ago a locomotive on the narrow gauge in Colorado worked water and blew out a cylinder head. There is a video somewhere that shows it. When I was a fireman on the steamers at Roaring Camp in the 1970's we always opened the cylinder cocks when stopping at the station to keep water from accumulating in the cylinders. We did the same thing on SP 2353 at Campo, CA when I was a fireman instructor for the Museum there. It is standard practice for steam engines when they are standing or starting.

rear speaker..... actually, No. That sb coal drag was over 17,000 tons... which is over Three times the weight that any of the 4000 class ever handled individually. Those two GE's on the point totaled 8,800 hp, plus two more shoving from the rear (unless they had DP cut in, in the middle, in which case there "could have been" over 20,000 tons), but the video did not show the entire coal drag movement, so not sure of the total train length and power distribution..... but regardless, a single 4000 could Not handle that much tonnage.
