I like Toph in this episode because till now, she's always been kind of a playful jerk to Sokka. She herself came up with the "3 on 3 + Sokka" joke. But when he vents his sadness about being "regular", something she herself joked about, she doesn't poke fun at him. She tries to help and recommends that he finds a teacher, says she misses him when he's gone, shows excitement when he returns, and even blushes. She messes with him a lot, but she's a true friend. One of my favorite details of Piandao's training method is that he doesn't pull some Miyagi-esque trick with his lessons like mentor characters tend to do, nor does he make Jeong-Jeong's mistake of not explaining why he appears to be teaching his student something completely unrelated. Instead, he makes it abundantly clear to Sokka what the purpose of the lesson is and why it's important to learn it. Piandao was actually born to two firebenders, and when Piandao was discovered to not be a bender, he was disowned by his family. Growing up, Piandao was a nervous and agitated child, but he showed interest in the arts and enjoyed painting and calligraphy, which helped him relax and focus his mind. He attended a Fire Nation boys' camp when his art of the sword was recognized, and furthered his studies in the army, where he developed a vicious and fearsome sword fighting style. Piandao fought many battles for the Fire Nation and won them all but felt conflicted with what the Fire Nation was doing, lost his taste for war and sought to become a more enlightened person. He may be Fire Nation but is also one of the reasons why he will not be selfish with his swordsmanship. Why he trained Sokka. He was also Zuko's sword master, so he was the one who taught Zuko to wield dual broadswords.

What Sokka doesn't realize at the beginning of this episode is that the Gaang has learned to work together and use their bending in creative ways because of HIM. They're just applying a lot of what they learned from the drill--which was Sokka's idea. He created that team. He got them used to thinking outside the box the way he does. Had he realized that, he might've been more like Bato and said, "Well, you kids pass or fail on your own. I shall observe how you have progressed." But then, he's 15/16 and still insecure. So we'll let it slide. Besides, we get my favorite episode of the series out of his day of insecurity.

I think Sokka felt the need to say that because Piandao was the first to both affirm his talents as a warrior specifically, as well as train him to botb be a warrior and a man. Sokka undoubtedly respects and admires the man and must have felt like his deceit was dishonorable in a way which had to be resolved.

Re: making you own sword. One of my favourite facts about my favourite author, when Sir Terry Pratchett was knighted for services to english literature, he bought a chunk of meteorite and used it along with iron from a local iron ore deposit to forge his own meteorite sword. It is called Thunderbolt, was used in his funeral ceremony (not sure in what way?) and is now owned by his daughter Rhianna whom also writes fantasy as well as scripts for games

Full head on, pun intended, smacking her face straight to the table and holding it for a bit. It was the funniest thing I had ever seen and it was so memorable. 😂

As a World of Warcraft player - I'd say Aang's armor is exactly what Warcraft characters wear on constant basis. WoW is known and recognized for it's hilariously impractical, absurd, massive, but visually stunning art direction.... Since World of Warcraft was gaining massive worldwide popularity during the years the show was airing - I believe it is partially a WoW reference!

Piandao is so badass, and Buff Iroh is even more so! Something you didn't notice is that at 7:34, they zoomed in on a lion turtle! So The Library wasn't the only time they hinted to its appearance in the finale! The waterfall that Piandao has Sokka paint exists in real life as the famed Gullfoss in southwest Iceland. It means Golden Falls in Icelandic, and its double tiered waterfall plunge at a total of 105 feet or 32 meters! The thing about Piandao's voice actor is that Piandao was voiced by Robert Patrick, who played the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The T-1000 could literally make its arms into swords, paralleling what Piandao says to Sokka when comparing the sword to a "long, very sharp arm". The blade that Sokka saw in the weapons shop is based on a real blade! It was drawn from a commemorative Qing dynasty sword that Sifu Kisu got in the Zhengzhou Wushu Festival for the fifteen hundred year of the Shaolin Temple in China.

I HAVE to share my Harry Potter diy wand story. I used a small pipe, a piece of wood, tape, a small light from an old toy and a battery. i disassembled the light and it had long thin cables, I glued the light on top of the wand, I glued the cable along the wood piece and connected the end to the battery, I put the battery in the pipe and sealed it in with the wood, the light was on! Lumos! but here was the trick, I cut one of the cables and the light went off, now I used my thumb to press the cut cable connecting it and turning on the light, now I could say Lumos and had the wand light up, it felt magical, but nobody beyond my family would believe that I made it haha, I was like 12 or 13, people might think I would be a genius when I grow up, but nah

With the making your own wand thing, I did in my Junior year of high school. My nickname to some people was already Harry Potter for 4 years at that point. When walking back to school after swimming class I saw a stick (about the width of a dowel rod and about 8 inches long) and decided to make a wand. I stripped the bark off, sanded it down to make it smooth and look like a wand, then used a brown marker to color it.

I love how this episode's really Sokka's time to shine! But, one thing I didn't like was how the Team didn't really give Sokka any good reason why he's special too? Like, c'mon guys! He's the strategist of the group, without him they wouldn't have figured out how to take out the drill. Heck, he's the whole reason for the invasion in the first place! He's also a pretty good fighter to, even with just a boomerang. Idk, it just bugs me how no one brought that up.

6:29 - 6:34 I think both of those attitudes together make a lot of sense, if you think about it. He’s humble to Piandao because he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of learning swordsmanship from a seasoned professional like Piandao, but he’s also asking questions because the direction of the teaching is counterintuitive. I wouldn’t expect writing a name down to have any impact on how to wield a sword either. I mean, would any of us? We get he’s a master, but, come on. It’s writing. If I may go off on a tangent, I think this is a kind of trope that media embraces. Basically, the idea of the student learning something unexpected and seemingly useless from a teacher (at least, useless for the context of the lessons), then eventually realizing why it’s connected is portrayed as a breakthrough moment for them. If you’ve seen The Karate Kid (the one with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan) and remember the first lessons involving picking up and putting on his jacket, you’ll know what I mean.

10:38 It's actually not that weird for me as an Asian to why Sokka suddenly told Piandao that he's not from the fire nation, thus endangered the whole avatar team from their camouflage. It's not a sudden choice, all of the students in martial art respects their master so much. It felt like dishonesty and unrespectful to lie about his true identity when he has learned from the best. Sokka felt like there's no honor in learning from the best master when Piandao didn't know, thus he tells the truth.

my take-away was that the fight was NEVER about Sokka's "betrayal" as Piandao stated he knew from the beginning Sokka was water tribe, but more he used that as excuse to give Sokka his "final exam" which is why he points out all the things Sokka does right. PS: FUN FACT: Piandao was voiced by, none other than, the great Robert Patrick, which many will know from his T2 fame, as the T1000. PSS: no, i never made a wand, nor a sword. but did make my own staff. it was a dow rod i got from Home Depot, that i did my own custom carving, engraving, and polishing. even added a quartz crystal to its heart. I HAVE studied weaponsmithing, and i love blacksmithing shows, and videos, and feel pretty confident i could make my own sword or dagger.
