You showed disrespect to the sea, disrespect to those who have gone before you who made basic saftey systems for good reasons and you showed disrespect to basic sharing of the sea let alone being a "Buddy boat" when you ran after seeing a knock down and didn't stay to fully communicate state of vessel and intent before running away. Your disrespect and cowardice towards your lover is your own personal business to deal, that is unless you keep pushing the alternative narrative here on a fully aware audience. People can see this debarkle on both channels you realise? Why not just take the proper way out and say "sorry, I fucked up, I should have stayed and made sure Nicole was okay and then sheparded her to the islands rather than just thinking of my own skin and then this wouldn't have ended up so dangerous and a matter of pure luck that she was okay" and teach others this was bad behaviour and there is a bit of honour with some basic humility?

You’ve done the right thing to admit you were unprepared for this relatively short passage leg and it was a bit painful to watch it unfold (no safety equipment, boat in dis-array, reliability issues, no backups, flawed decision making, scared pup, irresponsible boyfriend, etc.). On the plus side you showed a decent measure of grit, courage, and perseverance to get your boat to safety. Be brutally honest in the lessons learned here to help you go forward. Your partner's behavior and his comments in this mis-adventure are disturbing to me, don't let him cloud your judgement. I wish you the best.

On the boat, your solar panels are very poorly mounted. The one above the entrance is even secured with just zip ties. The autopilot cables are poorly connected, posing a risk of breakage and water ingress. You need at least $3,000 for a chartplotter with AIS (Garmin GPSMAP 723) , a backup autopilot (Raymarine ST2000 Plus), and safety equipment. Stay in the harbor until you resolve this! You are endangering yourself and also the people who might have to rescue you.

Nicole, it’s clear that you have the “bones” to be a successful bluewater cruiser. You have the experience, both at sea and in the yard, and-most important-you genuinely enjoy the act of sailing itself-the way it makes you feel. And you know the deep sense of accomplishment and fulfillment from making a voyage-even a little one. The sea has just taught you a few lessons, which, while harsh, are merciful, relatively speaking; the sea does not make a habit of taking prisoners or awarding second chances. I spend my days studying the history of humans at sea on sailing craft, and there is no counting how many it has swallowed. Anyone who gets taken to school by the sea and lives to learn from it has been most fortunate, and can take advantage of that. Serious sailing requires a mix of bravery and prudence that the sailor must learn to dial in rather precisely. Too cautious, and you’ll never leave the dock. Not careful enough, and you won’t reach another one. Or, if you do, your PTSD will ensure you never want to see blue water again. Preparation for sea governed strictly by Murphy’s Law-“what can go wrong will go wrong”-is the core ingredient of prudence. Redundancy, double- and triple-checks, having someone with prior experience check any work you’re not 100% sure of, the correct safety and navigational equipment for survival at sea, reliable ocean-appropriate self-steering, and stowage that seems excessive in harbor but will be necessary in a rough seaway. A boarding wave weighs several tons. And they’re going to happen. Squalls pack a few seconds or minutes of unpredictable hurricane-force winds that sink boats. You’ve been allowed to learn these things and come out ok. And you have the ideal boat for what you’re trying to do-though, as you’ve learned, it’s on a whole other level from a basic 26’ racer-cruiser. Whether you decide to keep doing this a completely individual call and no one has any right to question it. I decided not to because I decided it wasn’t worth it, and I’ve never regretted that. But you can do it if you want to. If it’s worth it. You’ve said yourself that this is an arduous life. You’re right.

Always always have a backup to the backup with critical items. If the phone is it for navigation, then have a spare burner phone with GPS (charged), and then a Garmin (also charged and hard mounted). The Garmin might be the best bet since if you should capsize or otherwise end up swamped, there are versions that can withstand being submerged and handled roughly.

You have a very robust boat under you, a strong head on you and a fickle sky above you. Always be prepared. A supply of bungees to tie anything down at any moment. bristols are low to water so you may have to figure out an alternatjve place for jerry cans on longer journeys or disperse to both sides to reduce risk of losing all. I also have a favourite sailing word LIFEJACKET. Hope by now you are truly enjoying some time in Bahamas making it was all worth it. Thankyou for sharing the raw story of yr journey

Life Jacket for sure.
@anonymous.notatall6419
@anonymous.notatall6419 15 күн бұрын
I would say tether before lifejacket in blue water. Why not get both intergrated. A lifejacket in the middle of nowhere just allows you more time to contemplate your mistakes and realise no one will find you as your boat goes over the endless horizon. A too long tether will just drag and drown you in the water too. So yeah, short tether, jacklines to clip to all the way up deck and lifejacket intergrated. But we are talking about a skipper who hasn't even strung her saftey lines around the edge yet 1:11

Although I enjoy you and your videos there is one thing that concerns me. My boating/sailing experience dates back to the 1950s. Sailing any size boat requires a bit of planning, preparation, maintenance, and organization which doesn't seem to be your strong suit. I see stuff loose on deck and disorganized and loose stuff below. Maybe some time spent on keeping things organized and secured would be helpful. Solo sailing makes these issues much more important in terms of safety and comfort. Wishing you fair winds and more favorable weather.

That is NOT buddy boating! It may have been intended. That is too dangerous of a situation to fail to man up and deal with a relatively SMALL sickness. I saw his video(s), too. Thats no where near debilitating sickness! Its not even seasickness! Not a sign of illness the next day! And, actually smiling at the horror of posible situations he imagined you could be in! Not enough of a challenge to justify abandoning a buddy, especially an inexperienced, solo, girlfriend! It may have been an opportunity to use the situation to scare you into being dependent on him, or abondoning your boat to join his?That's too bad! However, you are being made! Keep going! ...knowing ultimately you have to have a true "solo" mindset, being completely reliant on you!

I saw his video after this, I can't help but think all that sickness was faked after realising how bad he'd look on the video. Most people when they're seasick their mouth becomes dry, and it makes it difficult to speak, the dude was speaking normal. The words he was saying after knowing that his girlfriend was hit with squall with full sails and no autopilot makes it even more worrying. I would have been worried sick if it was a stranger let alone a girlfriend, which brings to think the sickness was faked after the fact. Every camera records time stamps on the video to show what time it was recorded. The only way to prove my theory would be to check when the sickness videos were recorded, and compare that with the placement on the edited cut.

Hi Nicole. Many lessons learned… even under high stress you didn’t give into fear. Thanks for sharing this raw experience with us. You are a resilient and resourceful person. -- I’ve got separated from a buddy boat under extreme conditions for quite a few hours- a bit scary but I was also lucky because I was steering towards a known piece of land… intentionally heading to the ‘left’ of my destination with no reefs or mysterious islands to confound me. … also ‘short’ of a working vhf radio…. Only a small scale chart and compass. … at 81 years of age I use my phone for navigation and keep track of where I am on a paper chart in case my phone craps out. … As for me, I’m going to get a decent waterproof shock resistant case for it now- your experience reminds me to be better prepared for when. ‘Shit happens’ ! “Never too old or too young to learn important stuff! “ ~ Keep on sailing, Skipper ~

I've been exactly where you are psychologically speaking. A bad sail and then you realize how bad things can get--and quickly! You're already on edge sometimes for days--almost exhausted before you even start the passage. A few things go wrong--autopilot, squalls, etc. and suddenly you go from "on edge" to borderline panic. In that heightened emotional state you think about family and wonder what the hell you're doing out here... I have been there more than once while sailing by myself--hand steering through the night by compass alone, singing to fend off sleep and fear both. I've said "this is not for me" a few times as well, only to flip-flop hours later after a meal or a coffee. I'm not prone to high emotion, but out here...well, it's a different game. I have had to adapt to a much more dynamic emotional state out here. I think that's a good thing.

She did just fine, if it hadn't been for the whole getting lost part. She needs more reliable navigation systems and redundancy. A single phone won't cut it. Chartplotter, handheld GPS, tablet, etc.

I’m going to be frank. As a liveaboard solo sailor of only 5 years I have experience sailing boats from folk boats to hunter 27 and Alberg 37. I think the design of your boat is smart and quite forgiving. It is very important if you’re solo to secure everything inside and all pets must be safe inside so nothing falls on them and they can get cozy when things get hectic. I don’t think solo sailing is ever prudent. But those are choices we make. I know you learned so many lessons on this trip. And you will walk away very different. I look back on footage I took a year ago and think wow I had no idea 😂 you know quite a bit. But your experience has yet to catch up to your knowledge. I think we are similar in that way. Don’t be discouraged! Being afraid is healthy. Next time think about all that before heading out. Respect the ocean with an irrational fear based on potential outcomes. Prepare and truly expect the worst and your outcomes will improve I guarantee. Smooth sailing! -Nico

ive been sailing since i was a kid, and race in all weathers in small boats, that is challenging and you absoloutely need your ducks in a row to singlehand, no wonder that was a scary experience, you were extremely unprepared. budy boats are no use to you in heavy weather, especially if solo, competence and confidence come with repetition and training, sail on a variety of boats with different people and know your boat and its quirks backwards. dont rely on engines, they stop you learning to handle a boat under sail in close quarters. this summer, our engine was inoperative so i sailed our 35 footter back into weymouth and put her alongside under sail. everyone was impressed... its how we always put our 19 ft dayboat away, and sure enough the fleet of squibs came in nd did exactly that. nobody thought anything of them doing it because they always do. i learned in the squib... i was putting dinghies alongside aged 13 in the same way, im now 47... if i cant do that theres something horibly wrong... keep going, and i reccomend a sailing tender, so you can sail more often. practice makes perfect. also racing is the best teacher, larry pardey started that way, thats how they had the skills to take a very similar boat twice round the world. it gets less scary once you feel competent and capable. more, ok this is serious, careful now, kind of scary , not out of control out of depth scary.

Well done Nicole, after overthinking your fear you became brave , awareness, responsibility as brave as I expected and wrote.....I understood each feeling you passed, ,,,as solo sailor did trip from Amsterdam to Mallorca by ocean without autopilot and any instruments else except my mobile which same problems I can say the mood becomes like sea conditions in the beginning then ,,,all pass ,, I'm ocean...by the way as you did that trip with this boat and that problems you faced so imagine you have better boat and ready,,, you have now your life lessons forever,, good luck be brave,,may see YOU around the world,,cheers sailing is freedom

Check out her last video. You can see how poorly her autopilot cables are protected. It's wired in such a way that it's in danger of breaking + it's not waterproofed. The cable moves freely around the deck. Completely wrong.

@@Ilia777kh Nonsense. Her boat is in disrepair and not ready to sail safely. It poses a danger not only to herself but also to others. She should not leave the port without repairing critical safety components. The fact that she lacks a lifeboat or even a life jacket or basic emergency AIS proves that it is too early for her to venture far from the coast.

Lots of lessons learned. It is hoped that getting a life jacket and a harness to clip into would be a good idea. That's not going to be the last time you fall asleep at night in the cockpit. Daniel should have hove to or circled back to keep you in sight. If you're going to sail together, then sail TOGETHER. I don't want to hear it about his boat being faster, either, and how he's being held back by a mere gurl.

*You championed brilliantly through this challenging experience Nicole.* You’ve learn a lot about preparation and as time goes on and you get more equipment and experience, I’m sure you’re going become the most popular sailing girl on YT. Just a caution about the Bahamas though, I know the Bahamas will be fun as usual but please don’t stay too long there. There are way too many KZbinrs in the Bahamas and most are too boring to watch and your channel will not grow. I’m looking forward to see how your sailing story unfolds beyond the Bahamas and to see the exciting places you’ll visit and the people you’ll meet. Also, one day you’ll find the perfect mate for you. There is one out there that will not be so self-adsorbed and who would’ve had enough integrity and foresight to ensured you were securely safe and equipped enough to sail alone before a passage …and would’ve instantly pushed himself circling back to find you once he lost sight of you no matter if you told him to go ahead. You’ll realize this as you get more experience in life; meanwhile, have fun in the Bahamas!

Sailing solo can definitely be scary at times. Having robust and redundant systems on your boat can mitigate some of the fears. Auto pilot is imperative! I have hydraulic system with backup motor and lines. Most importantly, having multiple devices to know where you are and where youre going. You’re doing such an amazing job…..don’t quit!

Hey! Thank G-d you made it safely. The first time I took out the Amadeus, an O'day 302 from Tarpon Springs to St Petersburg my water pump went, then the backstay snaped and allowed my cellphone to run low. I could see two storms approaching from the south, dropped anchor in about 40' of water. Around 2 AM the storm hit. To make a long story short I did not panic or freak out because I had faith in my vessel and equipment. I was also wearing a PFD with tether. I did not set up a jackline. I learned my lesson, look at the weather forecasts, prep and test your emergency equipment and reef the sails way before bad weather hits!!! There are so many things to go over and hopefully you've learned a good lesson. BTW, after two years sailing I made a pretty stupid mistake in November there will always be mistakes to be made, lessons to be learned. Happy New Year 2025, Health, No Fear, Full Sails, Calm Seas. Not all who wander are lost.

A captain is a military rank, I know service people who hate the way this title is just thrown out to anybody steering a boat now. Skipper is a more appropriate term. Great skipper? No, no she is not, if she actually becomes humble to saftey systems and hard learned proceedures and gets far far away from that wreck waiting to happen partner she is following, maybe.
