@@NJ-Cathie As long as it's fire retardant ...bundled wires run hotter one of the first items to catch fire in an auto electrical fire is the plastic air ducting. Though I think the Docs will be on guard for things like that.. if you have an extinguisher tube loop running through the ducts a bit like the running line it can stop a short or fire starting inside the ducting from spreading.🤔 Another idea borrowed from boats with Gasoline engines is the pre start up bilge blower fan . It blows clear any volatile or heavy gases like carbon monoxide or Chlorine from the bilges of a boat especially an engine compartment.

G'day Alan! IN relation to Garcia Explocat 52, we did a tour of their factory and boat in France and it was very impressive. A few things were missing from our list that Portofino was able to provide like the lifting boards, shallow draft, front cockpit. transom doors and dedicated engine rooms, dive room etc.... We also expect eh P52 to sail significantly faster than the Garcia but will have to wait and see when she is on the water - there are significant diagnostic features to make her go faster and have significantly more internal living space. Good luck with your search and ours should be launched around Xmas so not so long to wait now.... Keep your eyes out for it!

The 47 is looking fantastic. I can only imagine how much extra space the 52 will give you both it's gonna look fantastic. You must be really excited. Ah, the joys of boat life - where every creak, groan, and unexpected visitor (hello, diesel bug!) adds a touch of excitement to your daily routine. Who needs an innovative cat when you can have a boat with character, quirks, and stories to tell? It's like living in a floating adventure novel, complete with butt-scoot beds and surprise wiring challenges. Maybe it's time for a builder to shake things up with some hurricane-resistant, bug-repellent, and wire-taming innovations. Until then, here's to embracing the chaos and unpredictability of life on the water - may your adventures be wild and your repairs be few for the last couple of months on your current cookie cutter rig 🤪 Ohhh one last thing, dive / dove (tomarto/ tomato) the real question is, are members (Patreons ) or (Patrons ✅) that’s the stuff that’ll keep you up at night 😂 ❤ you guys

Why plexiglass and not real glass for windows?
@kirkb34739 ай бұрын
Cheaper and saves a significant amount of weight. For a boat of this quality they shouldn’t have cut corners here, look at any catamaran out there that 3 years old and the plexiglass windows are full of scratches/swirl marks and crazing.

@dc15449 ай бұрын
@@kirkb3473 Yes and after 10 years total replacement. so you just didn't save anything in the long run. and the weight wont make a difference since they will not be pushing their boat. Speed is for those who think they are in a hurry. I seen way to many videos about boats being so much faster and only saving 1 day crossing Atlantic. You only go as fast as you feel comfortable and when seas pick up you slow down. changing sails all the time is not gonna happen with small crew. So stop thinking about weight and be happy.
@kirkb34739 ай бұрын
@@dc1544 Sounds like you don't have much experience with sailing beyond watching some KZbin videos. The reason people choose lighter (performance) boats is for their ability to sail in light air under 12-15kts, it is not about going fast. In fact on ocean passages performance boats purposely slow themselves down to keep less stress on the rig and keep the crew comfortable. This is why you see heavy boats finish only a few days slower, but most likely they burned 3 times the amount of fuel. FWIW the other boats the BareFoot Doctors compared the Portofino to (Balance 526/HH) do have glass windows, not plexiglass...so even though they are "fast" and "light" boats, they don't cut corners when it comes to this stuff. Cheers!

I’d love to understand more if there are any safety issues having a front cockpit in blue water sailing with waves crashing over the bow. Is it a reality and can fill up with constant waves coming over the bow? Some people are dead against because the weight of water not leaving the bow quick enough, and just as many people have no concerns. I’m interested for myself choosing my first catamaran. Thanks
@seawench5559 ай бұрын
If u go back to the part with the 47, Eli points to and explains the floor of the front cockpit, it has many large gaps, where the water will disperse very quickly, back out. 👍
@barefootdoctorssailing85679 ай бұрын
Hi Martin, great question! I had exactly the same concern when Leopard first brought out the first front cockpit and it took me several years of the Leopards sailing from SA around the world without any trouble to increase confidence. There is a standard that the boats HAVE to reach and the cockpit must drain in a certain time and Leopards drain in half that time. Portofino will be same or better with the large openings to drain water. Your worry that water will crash in their with every wave does not happen as the bows lift up and the bridge deck comes above the waterline. It is only spray and occasional rogue waves that come in, in my experience. So the front cockpit now has about 15 years of experience and they are now on so many boats (Gunboats, Kinetic, leopards, Windelo, etc etc) that you do not need to worry about them...
