It's funny, just today I was costing out a laying hen enterprise in my head, trying to see if it would net enough to provide the quality of life I am looking for. I thought to myself, better check out some old Ridgedale videos to estimate the cost of the egg mobile. This video couldn't have come at a better time! Just wanted to say a big thank you, Richard Perkins, for taking the time to film and educate and thank you for being so damn good at it.

I just received your book Richard. Thanks for signing it. It's great to see someone add a "personal touch" to things these days. Much appreciated. I can't wait to get into it, so thanks again. Cheers from Canada! :)

Wonderful info on here. Wish more people 'recycled' more. I have seen people just leave the shell on the camper and retrofit the inside. This saves money and already has a waterproof exterior. I'm planning on trying that route as I hate making doors ;)

Bitumen will hold moisture in and rot the frame quicker. Try red oxide paint or boiled linseed oil thinned with white spirit and spray it on with a simple hand held pump sprayer.

Hi Richard, in the UK they are wanting litter areas inside the mobile house, which won’t work in your fantastic design, can you give me your thought s on this as I’m not sure where the middle ground is with the dept

Richard great work. the door on this egg mobile, has the diagonal bracing going the wrong way, over time it may sag, and be hard to open and shut

That you for the great video. I really love the idea of the floor, is this still working out fir the chickens in Europe’s cold winters or do you have any suggestion on how to modify it for colder seasons? Thanks again, best wishes for you and your farm!

Please wear DUST MASKS or RESPIRATORS when doing work like this. Old caravans are almost always moldy(like this one) and can cause health problems for people later on in life. It only takes a moment. Health and Safety First you guys! :)
@Redat237 жыл бұрын
I think you've been reading a little too much on the internet about mold. It may cause a bit of irritation if you already suffer breathing difficulties but to most people it's not an issue. I also think health and safety has become a controlling and obtrusive industry over the years, with the primary motive being money and job creation. If government cared about health they would not allow some of the most polluting industries to operate any more, mainstream agriculture being one. Let's not bullshit each other any longer.

Ahh, KZbin....everyone has an opinion but few people have much experience. I do, in fact, have first-hand experience with mold exposure due to past work and living conditions and have health problems as a result of it. Having worked in construction for over 25 years, when I see people working without safety gear (as I often did when I was younger) it makes me want to help out. That's why I posted. :)

Fantastic update, interesting to see that you continue to use reclaimed materiels. How many man hours are needed for the build? How do costs compare when you factor in salaries for the build compared to buying one in?

Hi.. for such a "simple frame" .. would it not be approx same cost to get a pro welder to put together the frame an axle and mount wheels? not sure..just asking, I wonder, looks very simple frame and getting scrap metal and welding might be same amount of work and cost than breaking old caravan ?
@rolfschnaufi64805 жыл бұрын
Hi, have you buildt one? How much work is it, to break an old caravan? Thank you. Im from germany, and you?

This is a great use of a piece of junk! European law says you can put 9 birds on a square meter of inside space. Does that law not apply to egg mobiles?
@Tiiru.7 жыл бұрын
I recommend citing the law in question if you need an exact response, but I know that the regulations in my country (which is an EU member state) have different rules of minimum interior space per bird for caged birds, roosting birds without pasture access, and roosting birds with pasture access (also called free-range). This seems to be the latter case, which also has the most lenient minimum.
@steadyhomegrown14457 жыл бұрын
I assumed it was the same in all European countries but I may be wrong on that. In Germany it's 9 birds per square meter inside for conventional farming, free range has to have an additional 4 square meters per bird outside(non-organic). There aren't any regulations on egg mobiles since that isn't a common way to house birds.
@Tiiru.7 жыл бұрын
I looked up the EC directive that concerns laying hens: eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=LEGISSUM:l12067 Under the alternative systems heading, the last two bullet points may interest you.
@steadyhomegrown14457 жыл бұрын
I will check it out, thank you!
@Tiiru.7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for raising the question. The way it is signed into my country's law, the stocking area may refer to either the egg-mobile only or the whole area that the chickens have access to. So whether the fenced area around the egg-mobile is included in the stocking area or not may be an issue you have to hash out with your local inspector. The roosting space of 15 cm per bird is set in stone though, which is twelve 5m long roosts for 400 birds. In the video, I count at least 11, though I'm sure Richard Perkins has it exactly according to Swedish regulations.
@anachronisticon6 жыл бұрын
Sadly, even for mobile chicken houses, under UK Soil Association rules a 3.5x5m house would only be allowed to house 105 laying hens ( at 6 birds /m2). Otherwise I would copy this design verbatim.
@jamesmorel10525 жыл бұрын
assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/732227/code-of-practice-welfare-of-laying-hens-pullets.pdf regs state 15cm per bird perch with 30 cm between perches and 20 cm from walls. Also 9birds/m2 useable area so no restrictions on coop/range there. Do you have info contrary to this?
@neilmassie26602 жыл бұрын

@@neilmassie2660 Converted old caravans in the end. Which I can only fit perhaps 50 birds in each. Gutted the furniture inside and put in a mesh floor, perches and nest boxes.

@@tedbastwock3810 Well nobody forced us to sign up for Organic certification. But yeah, they really don't have rules that account for this kind of small scale mobile coop system. It's very frustrating.
