Because back then game development was less industrialized and more "niche" than today. Back then people tried new stuff, new concepts, new gameplay formats etc while today most big developers are backed by big companies who will only finance games that will be safe to be a success.

It's sad how bad management managed to destroy S 4 League. I remember when, more than 10 years ago, the Twilight Season killed the game - they changed the font, stand room, removed the game's lobby and massive lag. Apart from the number of hackers and a dubious and late system for banning players. S4 League, even though it was old, was always ahead of its time... even to this day I've never found anything that was even similar. Rest in Peace, S4 League. Greetings from Brazil.
