In order to search for an official description of this new module I ended up on 'darktable's color dimensions' and had a near death experience :O. I have recovered though while reading 'darktable's color spaces'. Thank you for bringing me out of my daily routines, Boris. A way of speaking around here says - It has to get worse before it can get better - so everything looks just promising.

Here you can read more github.com/darktable-org/darktable/pull/15113 But, hat's nothing yet. It will get even worse when new version of sigmoid modul is integrated. 😂 github.com/darktable-org/darktable/pull/15104

fascinating! first off to take paintings and their colours as reference, awesome. Second the RGB primaries will be a great tool for color grading. thanks for showing

A great video to demonstrate color grading of photos. Also, I would like to try the new rgb primaries module after its release. Thank you so much.

Great content, thank you very much for this series on color harmonies. One criticism I have is that in my opinion you tend to oversaturate your images.

Hi Boris! Could you also show how to restore old colour faded/shifted photos? Maybe in a new video series? Old photos (on paper) lose colours and look yellowy/orangy/redish. We all have seen old family photos like this. Would be nice to see them in their original glory again.

The task is not so simple, because it is about chemical change and not the wrong white balance that lead to color distortion. Besides, you don't have an "original" as a comparison to better estimate the color distortion. There is also the additional color change caused by digitization (scanning). The third problem is the different color spaces. Darktable expects the color matrix of the camera as a starting point and then processes the data into an internal gamut wide linear color space. The scanned files have much narrower perceptual color spaces like sRGB. So I'm not sure if darktable is well suited for such a task. GIMP would be more suitable, I think. But, we can try it without me promising success. You can contact me personally in the forum (discuss.pixls.us/) and send me some examples.

Super idea to develop different color harmonies on the same picture. Learning curve still going up with your help. I would have a topic you might make a tutorial out of. I struggle creating Styles as base adjustments which work for a wider variety of situations. Are there any good practices you can share to save time that way? I hope this was understandable 😅

Hi Boris, I saw all your videos, I love them. I try to adopt color harmonies, but I struggle. At 35:15 you show the 3 primary colors. The vector scope is different from the one you use for the color harmonies. The RYB vector scope uses Red, Yellow and Blue to build a triad, and not Red, Green, Blue. Why is that? I mean, in the sense of complementary, what is complementary to red? I would guess it is cyan, but in the vector scope it is almost green. Do you know what I mean?

At that point I have chosen another color space (JzAzBz - practically RGB color space adapted to human perception), because I had to introduce the module that works on the basis of RGB channel mixing. In vector scope you can than see how the primary colors (red, green and blue) are mixed together. This has nothing to do with color harmonies. After seeing how the module works (how it mixes primary colors - RGB channels), at 38:39 I switched back to RYB color space in the vector scope to be able to use color harmonies for color matching.

@@s7haboOk, I got it. So, color harmonies are always based on the RYB color space?
@s7habo
@s7habo Жыл бұрын
The color harmonies are not tied to specific color. Depending on which color you take as the main color, the secondary colors will change accordingly. If red is the main color, then the secondary colors in the triad are yellow and blue. But if you take orange as the main color, the other two colors of the triad will also change accordingly. They then become green and purple. This is the result of the triad at the end of the video. The main color is orange - the face color.

So apparently the rgb primaries module is fairly similar to the Primaries correction mode of the Channel Mixer in ART, although there are no tint sliders in ART. Hmmm...
