I really miss THIS Sa Ding Ding, the world music star who would sing mantras in Sanskrit, belt Mongolian-style choruses and incorporate underrepresented ethnic groups into her albums. Lately all I see her doing are theme songs for Chinese movies and series, all sung in Mandarin in a soft voice (with some occasional operatic thrills to liven things up), and performing glammed-up, lip-synced performances of those same songs on Chinese television. Sure, the songs are nice, but the uniqueness is gone; she sounds indistinguishable from every other Chinese singer. It's almost as if the pressures of popular media or the demands of the film industry have turned her into just another Mandopop star. Where has the real Sa Ding Ding gone? Her last album was in 2015 and it was already heading into pop territory, not exactly the equal of albums like Alive or The Coming Ones which sound so fresh every time I listen to them. Will she ever grace her international fans with another world album again? I sure hope so.
