*[The Closed Eyes of Love]* KOISHI KOMEIJI Species: Satori Ability: Manipulating the Unconscious Satori Komeiji's younger sister. Like Satori, she was a youkai who has the ability to read others' minds. However, knowing that people don't like having their minds read, Koishi closed the third eye that gave her the ability to manipulate the subconscious. As a result, she lost her ability to read others' minds, but in return she gained the ability to take action unconsciously. The denizens of the underground no longer hated her, but at the same time, they never feared her and animals no longer loved her. The ability to read people's mind is the strength of one's own mind. Closing off that ability because it's hated is just running away, and is no different from closing off one's own mind. It's effectively pushing away others' feelings and shutting down. She became a youkai who wandered to and from aimlessly. Personally, she thought it was fun, so it wasn't really a problem. People around her felt a little sorry for her. Even her older sister, Satori, is unable to read Koishi's sealed-away mind, and doesn't really know where she goes or what she does there. Just like a pet cat, she leaves and returns and leaves again according to her own whims. Satori took pity on Koishi, ordering her pets to play with her and giving her some pets to keep as her own. She thought that taking care of the pets might give her a purpose, and it might enable her to begin opening her mind to others again. Indeed, it seemed that Koishi began to change, ever so slightly, after she began to raise her pets. She heard that a human had come from above ground and had fought with her sister, Okuu, and the other pets, and was amazed at the incredible power-up Okuu had gotten, so she decided to go see the above ground world herself. Because she could act unconsciously, she remained unnoticed. She could go above ground, sneak past sleeping shrine maidens, or go into the mountain the tengu guarded, and nobody would take notice of her. In a way, it was convenient, but she was also lonely. However, she had no mind capable of feeling this loneliness. At her destination, the shrine atop the mountain, she happened to meet a human. Her meeting with this stranger changed her mental state ever so slightly. She thought, how amazing it is to meet such an interesting person, and wanted to know more about her. For the first time, she regretted having closed her third eye. "I'll start by inviting her underground to the Palace of the Earth Spirits. I wonder what kind of fight she had with my sister, Okuu, and Orin. I wonder what kind of youkai she's fought with. I want to hear her endless stories." When she thought this, Koishi felt the lid of her third eye begin to shift a little. (ZUN's comment about the track) “This is Koishi Komeiji's theme. I tried to make it eerie and have the aura of a broken girl. I think the eeriness is fitting for an extra boss. Actually, I think a garden with roses strewn all about where thorns can prick you is really fitting for a battle, but for some reason it's the shrine this time.”

the worst part for me always was that Koishi isnt even edgy, her behavior was completelly justified, you did raid her home, steal her land and assault everyone she cares about afterall and the fun fact of the day everyone knows: the theme sounds really similar when "reversed" (however idk if it does too when properly reversed, since everyone just flips it, a true reversion would be rearranging the notes in a backwards order and playing them)

@@aihoshinoirl Koishi was fine in the end anyways, I know this is 4 months ago but literally once she became YukariKoishi she gained a heart and was perfectly fine. Even at part 8/9, sure, she was denying the past in her own way, but Yukari kicked some sense into her. KKHTA started obviously with no plot, was supposed to be an edgy killer but turned into so much more, and gave Koishi way more personality than what she's portrayed as in the first couple of episodes. I have a feeling they only really portrayed Koishi that way more throughout was because of the original "shock" factor of the show. Sure, there's the baby scene that is sad as hell, but there's perfect reasoning for that.

To her, the Urban Legend Incident was literally just what Halloween is to a child. So she tried to scare people. And it worked, since she got Sumireko to drop her phone and picked it up, making her the only youkai in Gensokyo with a cellphone. Whether or not it's still charged to this day is up for debate.

It's a pretty weird theme, the melodies repeat a lot, but they have variations. Is like if the theme is trying to get inside your mind, use similar notes to cause a "deja vu" effect, without even noticing. These melodies have a really somber energy to it. Together, it reveals the unknown dark side of our brains, the subconscious. This theme is great, it fits perfectly with Koishi's personality and traits. Also, Koishi is so cute!

@@lagfestmcgee9583 Just to clarify, it loops at 2:30. Right after the song reaches it's main melody for the last time, it subtly loops back into that intense part with the 3 notes at 0:20. Essentially replacing the beginning of the song. So the structure of the song is Main Part -> Less distinct and more scattered, but intense part, as it ends it transitions into -> Main Part again but longer and more varied -> The tense moment again (not sure if there's even any difference from the first time), at the end exploding into -> the emotional bridge (I think) of the song -> the End of the Song: the Main Part's second variation only sounding more...solid although broken? -> Loops back into the less distinct and more scattered, but intense part at 0:20 Honestly for me I still have no idea where Mugetsu's theme loops.

To me, the idea of being completely lost in your own mind is a terrifying one. Things like dementia or schizophrenia. This just makes me just makes me truly empathized with koishi. Couple that with her pretty damn cool design, her inspiration from psychological ideas, and the fact her species is similar to monkey in the original myths, and you got the best girl.

Koishi has one of the more depressing backstories in Touhou along with Satori. Although her story is a lot darker than Satori’s. A satori tired of being feared and hated, so she closed her Third Eye only for it to backfire on her. She can’t even be truly loved…like…holy shit that’s depressing even for Touhou.

Koishi is more of a tragic horror character than she is an edgy one, if that makes any sense, especially due to how lonely of an existence she leads. I do find it interesting how she and Kokoro's situations overlap quite a bit, which makes their rivalry all the more interesting. But of course, "tragic horror" fits the vibes of this song to a T as well. The part with the piano that follows the second chorus feels uplifting initially, then starts to downward spiral into sounding sad again... very fitting for Koishi, who I'm sure would be happier about not scaring people away... only for her decision to make her even more lonely in the long run. Also, I remember you saying you plan to do the CDs again at some point, so I can't wait for you to extend the Trojan Green Asteroid rendition of this song!

I really love the analysis that 8-Bit Music Theory did on this theme. The way it modulates by a tritone -- which is a very dissonant modulation -- adds to the chaotic and frantic feel of the theme. There's also a bit of contrast, as the theme actually releases a lot of tension as the modulation is completed. One of ZUN's best works, for sure.

I once read someone say that Koishi is literally an imaginary friend; She's invisible to adults who live on learned subconscious behavior and she's only visible to some kids who live in vibrant imagination and conscious fantasy. When they grow up, they forget all about her because she lives in their subconscious from then on and they can no longer perceive her. She isn't really locked away or subjugated in any way, either, in the fashion other characters such as Flandre and Nue might have been. She's there because you came to her. She's really just there, only to be seen by those who can still live consciously and without habit. I don't know if I would go so far as to call her an imaginary friend but it really does sound like a really fascinating way to perceive it. That there might have been someone we all knew when we were younger that others called false, imaginary, but they were really there with us and now that we're older and grounded in our tendency to lose track of ourselves we can no longer even remember that they truly existed. Nothing harmful, nothing sinister, just pure whimsy and that mythical wonder we had when everything was new and complicated to us.

I absolutely love this theme. I kept listening to it and even the reverse version because of how amazingly composed this piece is. It practically expresses everything about Koishi, imho. One of the best extra stage boss theme. Also I love the repetitive-ness give the chaotic feel. To me, whenever it loops, I just forgot the previous loop and as though I'm listening it the first time. Something I really love about this piece is how much of a dichotomy it strikes with Koishi's outward appearance. She appears cute, happy, friendly, maybe a little naïve, but this song tells a completely different story. You absolutely should be scared of this little girl, because she is far more dangerous than her appearance lets on and this piece gets that across spectacularly.

Koishi's ability actually worked on me. For example, for the first two months of me being interested in Touhou, she literally appeared right in front of me at least 2 times, but I didn't even remember her at all. That is, until Seija reversed it and I noticed Koishi's existence. A while later, I also noticed that my imaginary friend turned out to be Koishi all along.

@@willo90li a very cursed thing, the Koishi Komeiji Heart Throbbing Adventure. I tried to watch this. Koishi nearly decapitated Meiling in one of the first episodes and then in the next episone Koishi is fighting Flandre and the freacking disclaimer pops up promising even more cruel things ahead. I became scared for my mindset so I dropped it at that exact moment. But my pal watched it further. He revealed to me that there will be the Real Moon exposed, driving nearly everyone into the Bloodthirsty Madness, Rei'sen being literally Death Machine (guess Yorihime knows how to train rabbits afterall) killing at least Chen, Ran and then Yukary by sewing the bomb inside the Ran. But Yukari didn't actually died because for some reason Koishi's remnants (she was killed somewhere before) decided to posses the Yukari's dead body so now there's both Yukari and Koishi inside one body... He haven't told be anything else, but that only confirmed my fears and that I made the right decision dropping it.
