SouthAfricanMag.com Thina sizwe esimnyama, sikhalela izwe lethu. Elathathwa ngabamhlophe... Mabawuyeke umhlaba wethu!
Struggle hero John Beaver "JB" Marks (Born: 21 March 1903, Ventersdorp, Western Transvaal, Died: 1 August 1972, Moscow, Russia) worked with immeasurable commitment and dedication to ensure that South Africa belonged to all who lived in it, President Jacob Zuma said at his reburial on Sunday.
"Welcome home Comrade JB Marks. Welcome home our leader, commissar, intellectual, soldier, teacher and accomplished revolutionary," Zuma said in a speech prepared for delivery in Ventersdorp, North West.
"Your soul may now rest in eternal peace, on home soil, on South African soil."
Zuma said that Marks was a distinguished South African who was totally committed and dedicated to freedom, equality, justice and human rights for all.
Zuma said Marks noticed when African students and white students were treated differently at the teacher training college he attended and could see that black African students were discriminated against, Zuma said.
"He then made it his mission to mobilise other students and showing them exactly how the conditions they were subjected to warranted a revolt," said Zuma.
"It was the beginning of the conscientisation of this remarkable revolutionary."
Zuma said that Marks was one of the leaders who played a key role in the Communist Party-led anti-pass campaign of 1944, which drew 20 000 people, including ANC members.
Marks' success was "remarkable" and he managed to mobilise workers from various countries from Southern Africa under one banner and purpose, said Zuma.

People this are not controversial songs as you say. This are historical songs. They tell us about our struggle and fight for democracy. You only complain when it's done in Africa. Recently Oxford University, a prestigious school taught by renown intellects refuse to remove the statue of Rhode. Why? because they believe it's part of their history. So we will sing our liberation struggle songs where some people feel offended or not.

Kanyanga Eberhard Thank you! People forget that our history is not only told in books but songs and stories are some of the ways history has been passed on for generations by our African ancestors. So to ask us not to sing these songs is to ask us to forget the trauma.
@MxStella
@MxStella 5 жыл бұрын
I will let you sing these songs, as I'll let Jews tell their stories, as I'll let gays tell their stories, and as I'll let my grandchildren tell theirs. We all need to treat each other with respect and not forget the oppression some people have felt throughout history. Lest we forget.

I hate the whitewashing that happens where people refer to these songs as divisive. What happened happened. That is never going to change. One of the many ways that Africans record history is through songs and stories. That is how our history has been passed on for generations. Writing in books is not the only way of documenting things. Also, people should refrain from telling Africans how to share in their collective trauma. Whether people like it or not, we vow with every song, every dance, every story, every breathe we take, never to forget the dehumanising lives our ancestors were forced to endure and the blood that was spilled so we could be. Everytime we remember our heroes, a story will be told through song or otherwise so children of the soil never forget.
