Sa Ratantira Casteddaia ~ The Traditional Carnival of Cagliari ~ 11 February 2024 | Sardinia

The Cagliari Carnival, called Carrasciali Casteddaju or Casteddaiu in the Sardinian language, is the largest carnival folkloristic event in the city, reorganized especially after the Second World War starting in 1946.
In addition to the Ratantira with its famous nursery rhyme "cambara, cambara, cambara and maccioni! pee! sparedda and mummungioni!!!” it is characterized by various typical masks, let's have fun identifying some of them such as sa dida (the nurse), sa viuda (the widow), su piscadori (the fisherman), sa panetera (the baker), su paliatzu (the clown), su cademini ( the beggar), and the mask of Carmen Miranda, introduced in the 80s and which imitated the cinema and entertainment divas of the 50s.

Sa Ratantira
The most important symbol of the Cagliari carnival is sa Ratantira, invented by D'Angelo and Schirra themselves.
It is a march played with percussion with a fairly short meter and repeated incessantly.
In fact, drums, cymbals and bass drums are used and a sound is generated that gave the song its name, which is in fact nothing more than an onomatopoeic name.
During its performance, both the masks and the spectators sing nursery rhymes and tunes, the most famous of which is in the Sardinian language and reads "Cambara, cambara, cambara e macioni/ pisci urrè, sparedda e mumungioni", which in Italian means ("prawns, prawns, prawns and gobies, damsels, sparlottes and murmurs"), demonstrating the link between the city and the sea.
Another is "Donamì una cicca, Donamì-ndi un'atra,custa no mi Bastat, arren-gen-gen" (in Italian "Give me a piece of chewing gum, give me another one, this one isn't enough for me, arren- gen-gen")
The masks
In the first Cagliari carnivals the masks were those typical of city life, such as sa dida (the nurse), su macu (the madman), su tiaulu (the devil), sa viuda (the widow), s'arregateri (the second-hand dealer), su moru (the dark man), sa gatu (the cat), su piscadori (the fisherman), sa panetera (the baker), su paliatzu (the clown), su cademini (the beggar), su dotori (the doctor), su sabateri (the cobbler) and su piciocu de crobi (the boy).
Another important figure is su bandidori (the town crier), who goes around the historic districts of the city to announce in Sardinian the start of the Carnival celebrations, obviously accompanied by sa Ratantira.
In the eighties, other masks were introduced such as Carmen Miranda and moustachioed and hairy men who imitated the Brazilian dancers of the Rio carnival, or who imitated the divas of cinema and entertainment.
However, the main figure of the carnival is Cancioffali, a puppet king, who is carried in a procession throughout the parade and then burned in a bonfire on Shrove Tuesday, to mark the end of the carnival and the beginning of Lent.
