Great video. One important note. Some older cars will have pulleys with torx bolts instead of normal hex head. These strip very easily. Care should be taken to soak these with penetrating oil before trying to break them loose.

That top idler pulley is prone to failure after about 60 thousand miles. They fail like clock work after that. I started to change them on every Saab when I did the 60k "major" service. It prevents a most certain unexpected break down. Every Saab I purchase that has this setup, if there is no service record of when the idler pulley was replaced, I automatically replace it. Easy and inexpensive preventative maintenance. Who likes to get stranded?

Good points all around! Replacing the idler is so easy when everything is out.

Thank you for this video, there are still a lot of people who likes Saabs and with fewer shops available to work on them at a reasonable cost, we often search for DIY instructions like yours clear and easy to follow. I have a 2000 Saab 9-5 2.3 liter turbo automatic. I changed serpentine belt and pulleys. I looking for instructions to change the rear motor mount. Used your video instructions for the front mounts but can't find anything in the rear for automatic. Any help would be appreciated.
@TrionicSeven7 жыл бұрын
The rear is by far the most difficult mount, but I've never done it myself so I haven't made a video of it, sorry!

On a grammar point, 'Serpentine' is pronounced with a hard 'i' in the last syllable, not with a hard 'e'. It's named after the Serpentine lake in London as the belt's path around the pulleys is said to resemble the shape of the Serpentine lake.

If you need to change the tensioner pulley i find its easiest to remove the entire tensioner which you can do by using a sawed off 8mm allen key (insexnyckel) and than change the pulley when its off

Hiya, i did this today on my 9-5 saloon because of a squeak, thats gone now but it squeals intensely start up and the goes after 5 min. Do you know what could of happened? I pulled the metal pin out of tensioner belts on things and tight.
@nigelwaterton7877 жыл бұрын
Tack så mycket. Our 2000 9-5 manual shift wagon just began to sqeal a bit, and I suspect a new belt and possibly pulley are in order. I have read that the crank shaft pulley will sometimes begin to degrade (something about the rubber interface between the crnkshft pulley and the attached AC pulley, where the crank pulley begins to slip. Is that worth checking out as well? Also, if you have it handy, can you point me to info on the short versus longer serpentine belt application you mentioned? If it's best to eliminate the belt from the pulley you mentioned, then I'll do it. Who knew the Saab had an appendix? By the way, your video is fabulously clear. -Nigel

Car manufacturers always change minor things in order to produce cars that are cheaper and more reliable. In my experience there is no reason for choosing the long belt anymore. It's really easy to change, and since the video was made I have learned how to do the replacement without having to lift the car. Anyway, the harmonic balancer on the pulley can go bad, but it's supposed to be a little hard to see if it needs to be replaced, and it's difficult to replace without an impact wrench. Do the belt replacement, use the short belt, and replace the top left idler pulley and you'll be happy :)

I definitely noticed that I have this same symptom on my 06 9-5. The one thing that I did notice that was a bit odd was the belt tensioner was vibrating heavily (jumping back and forth a bit) i also noticed that at a stop/idle rpm that the steering wheel requires more effort to turn (almost as if I have no power steering). My question is how common/likely is it that the belt tensioner has failed as well (seems to be the case) and if it should be moving/vibrating at all.
@TrionicSeven8 жыл бұрын
It does vibrate, remember it's a 4-cyl engine so there will be belt vibrations. However, what you describes sounds very odd, and yes, the tensioner can fail too.
@joewolfe6428 жыл бұрын
It's not just a vibration it's as if the tensioner is dancing around (i.e. where you insert your tool to release slack from the belt).
@TrionicSeven8 жыл бұрын
I have seen this on my car and vibration there i normal. However, it's hard to communicate over text how much movement is normal, perhaps your is dancing around too much.

Thanks for the instructions. I have a '98 9-5. How do I access the tension pulley attached to the tensioner? Is it an allen wrench that is required to pull it off?
So appreciative of all of your videos. My belt is starting to shred, and it is making a sound like a diesel (not a squeak). I have the the mount off, but ran out of light for the night. Will finish tomorrow. Is the idler most likely the problem? Does the tensioner pulley fail often? Is the tensioner as easy to replace as the idler pulley? Thanks!
@TrionicSeven6 жыл бұрын
Tensioner is more difficult I think. Check all the aux systems like the PS and water pumps, maybe they are going bad and taking the belt with them

It was the water pump. That fixed the problem. Thanks!

Hi! That metal part with square cavity on 11:59-12:02 (I'm not sure how it's called in English) is visibly oscillating when my engine (B205E, 04' Saab 9-5 Kombi) is idling. Not sure if it is normal or if it's something to follow up?
