A test drive and overview of my own 900 turbo. A car I've had for half of my life. High mileage rocket sofa.

Such a sadness that the Saab quirkiness that hindered it from being a big seller was diluted to create more mass appeal which in the end with GM’s help, killed it. I selected a 900 as my new company car replacement in 1986 but sadly a sudden price increase cheated me of the experience. I will never forget the salesman at Gordon Lamb in Chesterfield, he showed me samples of how thick the steel was in various parts of the car including a box steel section from the easy access sills to demonstrate the high level of safety.

What’s happening with boost control? Are you on APC or MBC. If it’s originally a LPT I assume MBC or just a preloaded WG. What intercooler are you running? I’ve had lots of them. Probably skeins the time you got yours I got my LPT Aero and then took it to abbott racing. Similar number at 220bhp. But I left the type 6 box in. The acceleration was brutal when rolling back in the day. I’d see inline with my e36 M3. But these days most stuff can do that. My 535d would annihilate it (and the steering wheel wouldn’t be shaking all over the place from torque steer). The reason why they sound so good is the manifold design. Unequal primary lengths in that log manifold. Go lauren to one that’s been fitted with the more efficient equal length manifold. It sounds just like an early 9000.
@stefansworld33519 ай бұрын
@@rossbethell4187 Yeah, I'm aware of that, but I don't drive it like that all the time. I've got three boxes in storage with stripped 3rd and 4th gears because of that very reason from many years ago. I've turned down the boost for box longevity. I hate these boxes. Been stripping and rebuilding them so many times. Weak helical reverse gears too.
@stefansworld33519 ай бұрын
@@rossbethell4187 Just a basic bleed valve and many, many hours and time spent fine tuning the actuator rod to get the perfect balance of high boost with minimal lag. High flow air filter with cold air feed directly from the front, standard intercooler, relocated dump valve, decat. I've driven plenty with APC upgrades and such, but none of them ever seem to have the torque and punch as I get from mine. I'd not really compare it to the likes of the performance M models from BMW, but I had a go in my friend's M3 EVO E36, manual and I wasn't impressed considering it was only 8 years old at the time. I've never been able to afford any serious performance upgrades. I'd love to convert to a Trionic 5 system, but they're over £1500.

I was into Saab in a big way back in the day. I got a Saab 900 GL first then moved onto what l really wanted the Legendary Saab 99 turbo in red this was in 1984 the car was a V reg l unfortunately rolled it but managed to acquire another in red W reg within a few months fantastic car which used to turn heads back then . I turned a lot of people on to Saab who then had never heard of the company. Good video nice car the kind of car you don't sell on !

My first car was a 99GL. I had two more then started on the 900 range with a 1984 900 Gals.

The only thing that let the 99 turbo down was the non power assisted steering especially because l had wider tyres on. The 2 l had were the boot /sedan 2 door which l prefer loved the stumpy boot especially when viewed from. Behind low slung looked really purposeful. The 900 turbo was obviously a more refined car but l loved the rough and ready non nonsense 99 turbo l had to sell the second one which l used to see on a regular basis l made a mistake but l needed the money. Where l worked we had a local Saab dealer Woolford motors in Tottington . There was also a new fancy dealer in Manchester. I went one day for a part l needed when l pulled up there was a red haired guy stood outside who l vaguely recognized l nodded at him and he said hello which people as you know always did when you had a Saab .when l came out he was walking around my car and admiring it then it came to me who he was he was one of the presenters of "tomorrows world" cannot remember his name he had a fantastic looking 900 turbo 16v aero with all the body kit on but was totally blown away by my red devil!!! All the best mate

@catfish828 I have a brochure from Woolfold Saab dealership for a 99. I've had it since I was about 12 years old! We used to trade with Saab Manchester back in the day. I found that the 99 handled better than the 900 due to the shorter wheelbase and overhangs. I had a 1980 99GL 4 speed which I managed 120 out of it on a long run down the M61. It had a strong engine that had been rebuilt at some point before I owned it. I paid £40 for it back in 1999 and ran it for 18 months. Those were the days 😁

Years ago, a colleague of my brother's stuffed his Dad's 900 through his utility and garage walls...and then drove to work. It was enough to convince me to buy one for my family. I've owned a dozen Saab's since. One was a 5 door 900 16v turbo with an Aero red APC ( ECU ), lots of mods by Trent Saab, bilstein shocks, etc. It was huge fun & looked very unassuming until the lights turned green. I've got a loft full of spares that I refuse to get rid of. Obviously I want another. 🤞

Always Loved the 99/900, back in the day owned a dowdy 99 4-door and then an '85 2-door 900i (8-valve, mechanical injection), an unusual version that seemed to be almost stripped-out (electric nothing at all) and was quite light as a result, with the grunty 8-valve actually pretty quick for a non-turbo. It was white, minilite (style) wheels, boot spoiler and I actually came to prefer its looks to the 3-door. Yours seems to be pretty hairy, but have you ever considered an equal-length header? I know they lose the idle/low-RPM burble that distinguishes the engines, but I hear they reduce turbo lag (and sound better at high RPM).

Question: why was the upper radiator hose laced with zipties?
@stefansworld33519 ай бұрын
The top hose on the turbo models always at some point splits and bursts. It happened to me on another one I'd owned. The ties stop the pipe expanding, thus avoids breaking the internal braiding. It's been like that for about 18 years of hard driving and has never let go. Much cheaper than silicone hoses that can also fail and don't fit properly.
