The Saab 2 stroke engines were made in Sweden, except for the first prototype in the late -40´s which had a 2cyl DKW engine. I had a -66 3 carb 96 which ran beutifully, but low end torque is not these engines main feature! If you got a -68 2-stroke, Congrats! They are rare! 100 hp is probably the upper limit for the 850 cc, after that you will have to look for crankshaft remains all over the place...... The 2-strokes had far better handling though, than the later front heavy V4 cars.
@erichanson39613 ай бұрын
I had a 66 triple-carb 96. Mine would (and did) go 86 mph. Rated at 46 hp. and I'm sure it made that much. The Stine family got the rare 68 3 banger, with the lower windshield than the 68 V-4s got. I loved my 66 and their 68 too.

The weak point on all classic Saab models is the gearbox. Using a standard engine and careful driving seldom leads to any bigger issues. But Increased horsepower and a "sporty" driving style, always means a greater chance to blow the gearbox to pieces.... But why does the Ford engines fit so nicely in a Saab? The story goes that Ford bought a couple of Saabs as "mules" just to try out their new V4 engine in the early to mid 60´s........

Sounds like great fun, that was another V4 engine then? Google didn't want to play nice with me today ;) I heard about a guy who slapped a couple of turbos on the standard engine, upgraded the carburettor and a few other things, but he sold it because it started "eating gearboxes". They're great fun and I hope I can keep driving my -75B 96 V4 for many years to come (even though proper tires are getting hard to find).

The fact that it´s a 3-speed with a "big" rear window tells me (If not modified) it´s a 61-63 Saab 96, not a 93. The 93 was discontinued in 1960. People here laughing about this 45 hp figure, but these Saabs don´t weigh much so they´re pretty quick, especially on curvy dirt roads. In a big rally in here in Sweden in 1964, one guy used a Ford Falcon with a Holman/Moody prepared 260 (over 270hp). In the result list I can find two of these Saab´s with a better time!
@anivarhain6 жыл бұрын
Holy christ this sound is soooooo ❤️
@Djhg200012 жыл бұрын
That being said, the V4 had a particularly fragile gearbox as it was just a reinforced gearbox from the 2-stroke, this was much cheaper than designing a new one which would then be replaced by yet another in the 99. I've heard that SAAB tried out a few other V4 engines, but for some reason ended up with the Ford engine even though it wasn't the best one. If you haven't already I'd suggest visiting the SAAB museum in Trollhättan, they have a few old prototypes such as the "Toad" and "Monster" .

The V4 is still much more fun to drive than modern cars, never driven the 2-stroke though so I don't know how they compare in handling. Then again, if you want to see a front heavy 96 look up the V6 modification, from what I've heard they understeer quite a lot ;)

Don't forget--the Saab 2 stroke was a DKW engine from Germany. It is an 850cc Vs the DKW 3=6 engine which was a 1000 cc. I wanna see an 850 4-'joke' engine make as much power as this does! Even the later German Ford V4 in these old SAABs, at 1700 cc can't hold a candle to these little buggers! And these things are WAY De-tuned--300+HP is entirely possible from those 850cc's! I have a '68 model 96, 3 carb "shrike" engined car. Needs restoration. Lotsa low end torque these things have, too!

A friend of mine had a -73 V4, but the original engine was no good.. We installed a Taunus 1700 S engine (80 hp) in it, and it was just great fun to drive..... If going pretty fast on a twisty dirt road in an old Saab, the worst thing you could do was taking your foot off the gas pedal in the middle of a curve. If you did, you would soon be looking at your own tail lights..... It takes some guts to drive these great but somewhat goofy cars fast;-) But that was no news to you i guess......

@campingkillen Also bear in mind comparison with other cars of the era. 45 bhp doesn't sound much today, but cars were much lighter then than today. - When compared to a 1200 Beetle of 36 bhp, a 1300 beetle of 40 bhp, or a 1500 or 1600 beetle of 44 bhp & 50 bhp respectively, this is a very good output for the time. especially from such a small capacity motor.
