The South African Air Force Museum was established in 1973 under the able guidance of Colonel P.M.J. McGregor. The SAAF Museum has been very fortunate in obtaining many artifacts, aircraft and other valuable memorabilia from, not only the Air Force, but members of the public who have our military aviation heritage at heart. This foresight and generosity has enabled the Museum to present a very good insight into the history of the SA Air Force.

About 20 years ago a friend and I had the good fortune to see the Swartkops SAAF museum. We found an outdoor section of the base with its gate open, but no NO ENTRY signs up. We were both in the military previously and knew we were not supposed to go in there, but the gate was open. We had only been in there 5 minutes looking at those aviation treasures when an aircraft maintenance NCO found us and asked us what we were doing in thus restricted area. Once we showed an interest in the various aircraft parts in there, including identifying the Rolls Royce Goblin engine from a de Haviland Vampire jet, the NCO gave us a very special unofficial tour. That bloke knew about every piece in there.

I remeber watching a fully fuelled Shackleton take off from DF malan in about 1974..... I thought it would never lift off the runway..... but once the old lady came unstuck she was majestic!

Thanks, but you really need to think about the music - its mixed in so loudly, that I gave up watching. I was turning the volume up to try and hear the voice but got drowned out by music. Gave up.

Impressive museum. It might be worthwhile to consider moving the museum lock, stock and barrel outside SA before the blacks burn it to the ground. Upset that they see themselves as underrepresented in SA's aviation history.

Interesting inclusion of the anc terror flag, their contribution to the air war was simply to provide targets, cultural appropration i suppose.
