Though I don't think I actually thought about it, the "sailor" part never made sense when I first got into it, because they weren't sailors, and I don't think I knew about "sailor uniforms" (Japanese school uniforms never looked like sailor outfits to me.) Nope. The moon is tidally locked. It rotates at the same speed it orbits, so the same side always faces Earth. The moon's seemingly quick orbit is the result of the Earths' own rotation. This means the moon has one solar eclipse a month, not once a day as it's only got the Earth between it at one point of its orbit around the earth. Actualy, it's less than once a month, because the moon dosnt' orbit on a flat plane, it's angled a bit. So the right time of the month has to line up with the slightly varrying speed of its orbit so the Earth is at the zero degree point of its orbit and... Look, it really only gets 2-4 of those a year, okay?

The English names are all pretty clever. Serena came from Serenity, and from Selene, the goddess of the moon. Darien came from Endymion, the Japanese name of his past life. It also means "protector", apparently. The English names aren't terrible, it's stupid,how people hate them so much.

I’ve heard a rumor that Dic reused assets from Saban Moon to create their dub. For example the Logo is the same for both, and the background music is wildly different from the original Japanese dub. It doesn’t make much sense to create new music when the background music was already dialog free other than the words “Oooooooooh Sailor Mooooooooon”.

I love how the unproduced crap Sailor Moon Americanization NEVER fails to be talked about in every aspect of anime culture, but nobody remembers the actually produced and aired Americanized 90's Speed Racer cartoon. You know. The one where they race freaking mutants and Trixie was a blonde with a terrible haircut? Sadly, that was my way in to the franchise.

I'm not referring to the American Mach Go Go dub, but rather an American produced series made in the 90's by the same production company behind the original TMNT series, as well as the awful James Bond Jr. series and the depressingly overlooked Toxic Crusaders. As much as the original cartoon gets for having a weird dub, which you can't blame them as it was one of the first, there's something off about when an American company has full control and produces a show based on an anime themselves. Though, to be honest, when it wasn't batshit crazy, it was...well... forgettable. Otherwise I'd remember more of what the show was about.

Sorry, have to nitpick here: You talk about how the dic dub of Sailor Moon did weird choices like make Neptune and Uranus cousins. DiC didn't dub Sailor Moon S or SuperS. That was cloverway. Completely different company. Now granted I don't know if it was made up of former DiC employees or whatever, but I don't think so.

Cloverway did the dub for DiC. However, DiC had nothing to do with With SuperS or S, that was Geneon.

It was the same studio in Canada that dubbed all the first 4 seasons of Sailor Moon originally. However, the producers changed partway through -- first DiC (all of SM + most of R), then Geneon (S and Super S).

If I remember correctly, Saban actually had little to no involvement with this project. However, it was done by Renaissance Atlantic, which did co-produce Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers & was a partner of Bandai America at the time. Hence the weird extra toys.

Interestingly, Saban’s actual anime dubs (of Digimon, at least) were not. They kept it set in Japan, only had their Americanized names be nicknames (though they did change the main lead’s last name from one Japanese name to another). They made it a very America-like Japan, in the manner that dozens of fanfic writers would in their high school aus, and said that the seaweed in onigiri was chocolate for some reason, but it was still fairly chill with it all.

Because of what ViviSectia wrote and also to avoid confusion/controversy from parents and other adults conplaining about it being inappropriate for whatever reason. That included certain clothing being too revealing/nudity, blood, graphic/very violent scenes, language (usually words like "damn" and "hell" if not stronger words like "f*ck"), use and/or the prescence of certain weapons like guns, religious references/symbols (especially the manji aka swastika for obvious reasons), and of course cultural references like names, food, locations, etc. Although most Japanese culteral references aren't as much of a problem as the other reasons, it still happened to avoid "confusing" American children who typically knew very little to nothing about Japan. This is why in earlier episodes of the Pokémon anime, there were scenes like the main characters calling onigiri (riceballs) jelly donuts when they clearly weren't. Some of these changes were silly and didn't make sense, but others were understandable if the primary audience were children.

You can never Amercanize *Anime.* Anime can't be changed with English Names of a new opening that's in english. If you were to change Naruto's whole story from becoming ninjas and modernized it, it wouldn't be the same. If you were to change Natsu's name into something American, it wouldn't catch on everyone would probably still call him Natsu. If you were to americanize the ANIME I grew up watching for the love of the JAPANESE culture. *You're seeing a whole lot coming* That's why you can only dub anime but I don't really prefer THAT.

To be honest I don't mind English names. They are easier for me to remember than the Japanese names. The content is still the same. That is a bad comparison though. Sailor moon takes place in present day while Naruto takes place in a fantasy world with ninjas and there is some modern technology.
