Sabarimala Rituals and Myths | Documentary | Manorama Online

Sabarimala, the holy hill of Hindu devotees, is one of the most prominent Hindu pilgrim centres in South India. The holy hill is located at Ranni Taluk in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district. Every year thousands of devotees visit this holy temple after completing their 40 days' long religious rituals. One of the great things, the devotees follow here is a holy bath at holy river Pampa. Bathing at Pampa is ritually important and is related to Sabarimala visit as the bath is believed to wash off the sins. This video speaks about the rituals one need to follow as well as the myths related to Sabarimala.

The deity in sabarimala is that of avalokiteswara Bodhisattva, the second incarnation in Buddhism. This was in the photo taken by maharaja utharadam thirunal when he visited sabarimala in 1942 before temple fire in 1950. This picture now is in travancore palace. This Bodhisattva had a sister and it is the kollur mookambika devi.

Walking through the forest terrain during the day and resting at night. Short path is from Pamba river which is 3-5hours (depending on speed) of vertical climb to reach the top.

Brother, I would like to share a valuable story, Please read it till the end....... "Now, If you have ever been to Sabarimala , a famous pilgrimage center in Kerala, you would know about the rituals the devotees follow in order to go there. The main rituals include, wearing a sacred chain after puja, and then the VRATHAM starts which should be observed for 41 days and to be completed before the commencement of the journey. During this period, the person is no more addressed as he/she, but only as “swami”, which is a term for God. Swamis do not have any kind of material pleasures, would live as a brahmachari and will be pure vegetarians for the time period. Swamis take bath twice daily and do puja with full devotion. There are in fact thirty six rituals to be observed and followed for the Sabaimala Pilgrimage, out of which eighteen(18) DOs and eighteen(18) DONOTs are there. If you want to go through the complete list, visit Sabarimala Rituals Now, after 41 days, swamis begin the journey continuously chanting prayers of Lord Ayyappaswami. They climb the mountain where the temple is located, with bare foot and with a sacred bag on their head that consists of items to be presented to Lord Ayyappaswami. Now, after everything, on reaching there, you will be welcomed by a message. || तत् त्वम् असि || That is You. You are that. You are the one you came in search for. You are the one you are seeking. The one who can help you in troubles. The one who punishes you. Your body is nothing but food, food is nothing but nature, nature is nothing but earth, earth is nothing but universe. Tat Tvam Asi. Tat Tvam Asi establishes Advaita, non-duality. If you understand this, you realize you are the God you talk about. Your duty includes helping others. And you also receive help from others. Because, by that you are only helping yourself. Because they are no different from you."

There was a teleserial on "Swami Ayyappa" which was telecast around 2009 in Malayalam and also i think its translation in Tamil. If you browse the you tube you will get it. I do not know how to give website link. Please see it , even though some changes and incidents are there, it gives over all the story of Swami Ayyappa. The title song is "Sabhari malayil vazhum ayyappa". Hope you get it.

Sabarimala was actually a Buddhist shrine. Centuries ago most people in Kerala were Buddhist, like in many Buddhist temples, after mass murder of the monks and driving away the rest, Brahmins took over the Buddhist monasteries and converted them into temples. Recently in supreme court, it was mentioned in an affidavit filed in response to a notice issued by it on a petition by the Indian Young Lawyers Association and five other women advocates challenging the ban for women entry in sabarimala dharma sasta temple..
