My great grandfather lived long enough for me to know him. We would ask him about his time in WW1. He was a major in the German army. He said he gave orders to never fire on Christmas day. As he said "it was the only orders I ever gave that I didn't regret".

I am from Germany. My grandfather also served in WW1 and my father in WW2 in the Navy. Thankfully my father never had to give an order to kill someone.

Hello friend from the other side of the Rhein. No french, no german, no englishman,... doesn't have someone who went to the "Great" War. From my french perspective, education describes the germans as the evil but we forget that it was not "the german" nor Germany. It was some politicians who, with a simple signature at the end of a paper, send millions to their death. In class we see ancient letters from these mens but only on the french's side. I would have liked to read some german's letters too. Because, at the end of the day, we are all humans with same fears. We can just hope that the sacrifice of the ones who never came back and the ones who came back but died (mentally) in the trenches will be remembered and that there will not be any third world war

It's very hard to understand how difficult it must have been to continue the battle after this truce. I heard once that people purposefully tried to miss the shots, because killing others is not normal to people. I don't remember if it was about this war of some other battles, but surely it can be almost any older battle, where you saw the opposite soldiers. This song and video are so powerfull.

I love Sabaton purely because of the power that each song gives off. Each song is a wave of energy and power that threatens to engulf you. ~ That song really showed the beauty of the Christmas Truce. I recommend one of the band's most underrated songs - The Last Battle. This is a story about one of the last battles of American troops during World War 2. And at the same time one of the strangest. This is a case of history that is hard to believe at first. Because we have an Austrian castle, French Politicians, an American unit, a German Wehrmacht unit, a German SS unit and Jenny in the Gate.

Agreed. The Last Battle is such an amazing story. It feels almost as crazy as the Christmas Truce one but both are real and I love that.

What I loved most about this song is the story behind it. Those men back then refused to commence battle during Christmas time until both sides were threatened by their commands with the court of war. They then said goodbye and wished the others for best, left the no mans land and continued fighting the next day.

Sabaton have whole albums of amazing songs telling amazing true stories. I think this is perfect for Christmas. Perhaps in the new year would be a great time to react to Screaming Eagles about the 101st? Or The Lost Battalion about,well, the list battalion. Those two are both about US heroes in battle, and a very good lead into other songs about heroes and sacrifices made by soldiers all over the world. Happy Christmas from the UK!

Merry Christmas a really great reaction once again :-) Someone will write it so might as well be me, the end Vocals are from Floor Jansen the lead singer from Nightwish at the moment and she is also married to the drummer Hannes in Sabaton. For further reactions I would also suggest No Bullets Fly some other personal favorites are Night Witches, The Attack of the Dead Men, Soldier of Heaven, Fields of Verdun, Cliffs of Gallipoli. To be honest I love most of the stuff they have released, they have very few songs I don't like, or don't like is wrong. Maybe the correct wording is doesn't like as much as some of the others. Some live reactions that can be fun are En Livstid i krig and maybe something from their performances from ages ago in Wacken.

How did this actually happen? According to various stories, on Christmas, the German army started to sing Stille Nächt (Silent Night) in German. One of the translators for the Allies (French, British; the USA didn’t join the war until 1916) heard this, high had the, sing Silent Night, in English. It went back and forth, until they decided to come out, greet each other, retrieve and bury their dead, exchanged presents, and even drank with each other, and played soccer, just as the video portrayed. With Sabaton, they tell history as it factually happened, without any slant or bias. The cross they planted still exists, near Ypres, Belgium.

Most soldiers had to be transfered to other parts of the front as they couldn't shoot at people they had made friends with. There never was another Christmas truce since it would be severely punnished.

High command on both sides also ordered artillery bombardments on no man's land from behind the lines so that the local commanders couldn't order a truce either.

This song and the events it speaks of is proof that if given half a chance we can all just get along. Peoply, by and large, are not bad. Not evil. For some reason we just end up believing that, often with very little personal justification as to why we came to that conclusion. Nations as a collective and certainly the people ruling them can and enough have been, objectively evil by any reasonable yardstick of morality. But individuals, you and me, the everyday person, rarely are. Great reaction Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you :)

If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg. The album Carolus rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding. The album was released with both an Swedish and English version,the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldiers view and the English is more from an outsiders view. It is the Swedish version they played at that show so be sure the subtitles are on,I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

After this happened the Russians tried to start a truce on the eastern front on Easter but the issue was that Easter is on different days in the Russian and the German calendars so it never happened.😢
