At the time it was, so the entire argument is irrelevant. Only if the action was carried out during a time when it was considered morally wrong can it be relevant. Modern people projecting their norms and values into history is absolutetly pointless and is often harmful. You really shouldnt be studying history.

@@fredrikengstrom2107 At the time no it wasn't. When was murder of defenceless people ever morally right? "Thou shalt not kill" is one the 10 commandments.
@fredrikengstrom21076 жыл бұрын
@@andro7862 You are completely oblivious to cultural understand if you truly think this way and it's actually a very infantile argument. Obviously views on ethics and norms change through time, society and culture because our understanding of it will never be complete. It was considered morally righteous and even necessary to painfully torture someone to death in 15th centuary. It was the norm, rather than exception to slaughter an entire city of civilians if the lord of the city had refused to surrender. In war, everyone was considered a combatant of the nation regardless if they were civilians or soldiers, and defensive wars were almost always fought on enemy territory because the soliders could then live off from the opposing side population, and armies could sustain themselves on others resources. Killing prisoners made sense because you wouldnt have to fight the same enemy twice, unless they could be bargained for, or turned into some kind of profit. You must have missed the entire chapter in school about the enlightment, (which makes me question how you ever managed to pass your basic history course at all), because this is when men started to truly question the nature and morality of man based on natural values and rights, to the point that it actually caused a lot of social upheavals. The translations and interpretations of religious texts that you quoted has rarely helped anyone regarding this, and has often caused more harm than good. The same man who regrded the scriptures in the bible as fundemental to the lives of all men, and who began the reformation, was also the same man who suggested that his lords should kill every peasant "like dogs" if they even rose up in rebellion to defend their social, economical and "human" rights.

There are actually multiple argued reasons for doing this. The first one is revenge for what the Russians had done a few years ago, makes sense since Rehnskiöld only ordered the execution of the Russian prisoners. Second is that is was due to the Russians trying to pass as Saxons and pretending to be someone you're not was seen as very unacceptable in those days. Then there's one more possible reason(speculation on my part)and that is that he didn't want the prisoners to outnumber his army(which they did), then he simply decided to kill Russians over Saxons for reason one or two.
