In the final days of the Second World War the German general Walther Wenck was ordered to attack the advancing Russians with his 12th army to liberate Berlin. Facing the hopeless Situation he refused to obey the Führer's order, instead he created an escape corridor out from the ruined city together with the remains of the 9th Army. His destination was the US occupied territory in the West, where he wanted to surrender. For the general the Battle of Berlin was not a battle, but a rescue operation. After he had saved more than 200,000 refugees from the city Wenck crossed the river Elbe aboard the last boat on 7 May 1945.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

----------

Sometimes, it takes one man to say "Enough is enough." ANd, the man whom forced the corridor, not to follow orders but to rescue the citizens and, the shattered soldiers with no will or reason to stand and die, that is his measure, he made this his mission, a mission of mercy.

People seem to get tunnel vision on the WW2 era germans. Most of the German soldiers were not part of the nazi party and there was also a lot of the upper echelons of the German military and politicians who saw the Nazis for what they were. If there weren't things like operation Valkyrie wouldn't be a thing.

Pulled from the Wiki: During the final battle of Berlin in 1945 the general of the 12th army, Walther Wenck realized that the end of the war was coming, and instead of trying to defeat the advancing Soviet forces as his orders were, he used his army to create an escape corridor out of Berlin. For such an act he would surely have been sentenced to death, but instead he ended up being responsible for up to 250 000 people safely escaping the burning city of Berlin. For some this was a battle, for him this was a rescue operation.

Just read about Wenck. Holy fuck, how does this guy not have a movie in his honor? Now that right there is duty. Wenck saw the situation was hopeless, he knew the war was lost, but rather than simply laying down his arms and hoping for the grace of mercy from the Soviets, he ordered his tired, demoralized, and defeated troops forward to rescue as many civilians as possible even as the Reich was crumbling. What a fucking champ. I get that Germany doesn't like glorifying its WWII-era past, but Wenck is probably the sole exception. Dude deserves a statue in his honor.

As a russian I was always proud of the victories of my country, and whenever I heard about them it was great. But now I understand that the war is ugly thing, and even though Nazis killed, raped and tortured countless civilians in Russia, their nation also suffered greatly. Many innocent germans were killed or suffered in this war, or were forced to fight for something they didn't want to. I deeply want that such tragedy was never repeated again, and want only good relationships between nations.

This man, born and lived his childhood when the German Empire was at its peak, then, lived his youthhood through a war that was supposed to end all wars, then, seeing his country fell apart, seeing the chaos in the streets, anarchy, lived through the hyperinflation. He lived through the chaos of 1920's Germany, the putsch, the Kristallnacht, heard about the Reichstag go up in flames, see Hitler rise to power, see his country rise to become a powerful nation at that time and one fateful September, he was thrown in a war that changed the world forever, at first it was numerous victories but then defeat began coming one after another until he was ordered to defend Berlin. Seeing the inevitable, the red tsunami crashes through every wall that they can build, he hold firm to his ground, not on anyone's order but his own. Disobedience saved numerous lives that day, he made his call. Hard to believe that this man, who made that significant choice in his life only to be taken away from this world in an insignificant traffic accident. Don't get me wrong, but this accident, an accident that we often hear, read or watch in the news, almost nothing special. He could've died peacefully on his death bed, in his home, surrounded by his beloved family and the members of the 9th and 12th and the children who made it across.

The true story about my great grandfather he was one of the Kriegsmarine, in 1943-4s he had fought in the Atlantic against the US and allies, a few weeks before the war end he knows that the reich would lose the war, so he and his fleet sailing acros indian ocean to the far east, unfurtunately his ship hiting the seamine and sank in Java sea, just a few survive and gladly a coal ship with Indonesian flag save them and make it to Java island, in august 1945 he only 18, and you can still find the wreck there. He did not expected that he have to fight again and join the Indonesian side when the Dutch invaded Indonesia in late 1945-1949 war, in 1950s my grandpa married an Indonesian, and here we are.. we live in litle germany in Bogor city, West Java, and god bless him he still alive today, I love to hear more story from him.

Reading about this engagement, I remain surprised that it hasn't been made into a movie, like Letters from Iwo Jima, which was an excellent movie. It would show the day where the Wehrmacht refused the Nazi orders, and began fighting for Germany itself, under fire from the Soviets and SS. I think that there is tremendous potential here, that could easily be brought to theatres; like Saving Private Ryan, Fury, and Letters from Iwo Jima, it could show a more human side of the Axis, and show what it was like to fight and die, knowing you are on the wrong side of the war.

This comment section is so yikes. People are attacking each other just because they are from another country. It's sad that it's under the Sabatons track. People saying something like 'I wish they were invaded once more' or people responding to a guy, who said that his grand grandpa died in Stalingrad, 'its good that he died, he was nazi', it's so pathetic and looks like you guys missed the message of the track and whole Sabaton's art.

Here in Germany we're taught about World War II for at least 3 years in school and in several school subjects but we never learned about this historical event. Why? It's the same with German resistance fighters that only were mentioned once in lesson. Is it that unimportant or dangerous to teach us about German people who did something good during WW2 and not just about the horrible deeds of nazis and their followers or how the Red Army "freed" German citizens? The German education system really is ridiculous...

Man, this song always bring a tear to my eye. At that point in the war, these people already knew they were done. The fact that these war weary soldiers dug in and did what they could to protect their people from a vicious group of Soviet soldiers, not for Berlin, Hitler, Germany, or the Reich, but just for the sake of humanity. Thats what a true soldier does. As an ex service member of an Allied country I would salute these people.

the 12th Army known as the Ghost army. Only officers and at the last moment they put 16-18 year old youngsters into the ranks to fill them up and lead these into a cruel battleground ripping these young people to pieces. My great grandfather was a veteran and became an officer in that army. My grandma told me that after the war he walked around in the house and cried because of the young people he sent into battle and never made it back. He got shot 6 times during this war, managed to survive it to be back to his family on the farm. he died 24 years later 66 years old with 10 years in a wheel chair. The cold and battlewounds took its toll on his body, and the screams of the dying kids and soldiers part of his mind. War is nothing to be lived through but pain and agony.
