Great song choice. Sabaton also has a 2nd channel Called Sabaton history where Sabaton brings in a Historian to talk about the historical event that a song is dedicated to along with how the song was written .

Milunka Savic is the most decorated female combatant in the history of warfare. She served the in the Serbian army during the First Balkan War and WWI earning medals from Russia, France, Britain, and her homeland of Serbia. She was largely forgotten after the war and would later raise four daughters while in poverty before passing away at the age of 81. She became involved in the army during the First Balkan War when she disguised herself as a man as her brother was sick with tuberculosis and couldn't fight when he was called to serve. When discovered, her commanding officer would offer her a position with the nursing division as it was considered improper for women to fight at the time. She insisted that she'd like to fight rather than be a nurse. Her CO said he'd think it over and she'd hear from it after he deliberated. It took about an hour before he returned and allowed to continue fighting on the frontlines.

You forgot the part where she stood at attention for the whole hour he was deciding. She told him she would stand there and not move until he let her back onto the field.

Her Carrying the flag is due to the older way unit standard bearers used to act in combat. Especially during the american civil war the regiment would carry either a flag specific to it or the national flag on both sides and during charges the flags would be used as a way to guide troops towards objectives and keep troops organized and help make reorganizing easier. Flag beares usually today are ceremonial as we have wireless communication. It was practical at the time. Flag bearers did carry sidearms during the world wars aswell as bayonet knives. Some would carry sabers or the flag may have had a spear like tip to use. The last famous instance of combat standard bearers was in the battle of berlin and pacific wear flags would be strapped to rifles by the japanese and russia had flags carried by soldiers in the numbers as high as 30 to have their banner raised on the reichstag building at the end if the european war. Modern standard bearers participate in changing if the guard or colors ceremonies. And in the cold war some armies still had units carry flags in combat, usually mounted on vehicles or carried folded in bags to raise on conquered objectives.

And those decorations were not for show, she was an absolute badass as well. Took her brother's spot in the army because he was bedridden. When she was discovered as a female, she refused to be changed unit (to become a nurse), and basically forced her way into staying in a frontline unit, against the decision of every officers...

A lot of people say that the model they used to represent her in the video looks a lot like Floor Jansen of the metal group Nightwish and the one who handed her the flag after she got wounded looks like Pär of Sabaton.

Hey, I'm really pleasantly surprised when I saw this reaction of yours to Lady of the dark. We in Serbia until nowdays always remember our Milunka Savić, she was a real national hero, and a good person in general. She had her daughter, and adopted and raised twelve more girls who were war orphans side by side to her daughter. And she is with Nikola Tesla, Mihailo Pupin, and nowadays Nikola Jokić and Novak Djoković, one of the greatest Serbian people ever. Thanks for the great video, and much love, respect, and best wishes from Serbia, southeast Europe.🙋🥰🤩🇷🇸❤️🇺🇸🥂🙏🌄

Grenadier was a position placed by the British forces, subsiquently American forces took it as well. With this the job in mostly later representations everywhere, before WW2 generally the "Grenadier" was a trained explosives person, often given demolition charges, TnT, digging equipment, and often a basic rifleman kit. Soldiers that were to be equiped with the soul purpose of giving the enemy a hail of grenades were called " Bombardier ". Often the soldiers equipment was limited due to production streingth as well, so a soldier with grenades would give up ammo as a trade. Each soldier for WW1 would come with 1 rifle, 4 clips, and a loose bag of 40 rounds. If your looking at a " Bombardier " thats a whole different level, they can get up to 6 grenades, as a trade they would be expected to give up there weapons to other soldiers if they do this and often they would be given a melee weapon (Often this was a shovel or knife, though some soldiers had to make clubs or weapons of there own). Handguns were only issued to officers (if the nation didnt make them buy it themselves), and specific troops, most enlisted soldiers would have to purchase there handguns in any armed forces branch, following this the weapon is also designated propperty of that army usually as well and its illegal to take said weapons home after you served (This end part can be worked around if done right). Flags were listed as a "Primary Weapon", if you agreed to wave the standard in combat you were to not have a Primary Arm. To pick up the standard in combat is believed to be the most trusted person on the battle line, enough so that they trust your skills in melee to be able to beat the enemy bare handed. Generally nobody would open fire at a Flagbearer as they dont really have any face first value as a target in a firefight, Moral is one thing, stupidity is another, why shoot a flag bearer instead of firing into the 20 man wall pushing at you with knives and guns? Keep in mind what I said before, limited ammunition and limited resources mean everything is effect for form. Flag Bearer's stoped appearing in WW2 officially because Artillary would drop areas and flag bearers were a waist of manpower on a frontline. Often they now deligate the roll of flag bearer to the Color Guard and the Band to raise moral of the troops headed out from leave to the fray. Another insane bit about the end of this is a lot of people forget is that she was harassed by German soldiers while under Nazi occupation in WW2, and she just brushed them off like they were a basic annoyance. She would at some point at the end of WW2 adopt a lil girl and raised her well as a single mother. When later asked, her response was that the men basically were too afraid to ask her out. Its not confirmed, but its implied that she took in a orphan she saw as WW2 was at its height. She had actually adopted a few and raised them as well as she could, the children dont get mentioned past that point and thats about as much as we know from her later years. I highly recommend watching Sabaton History, its there B channel where they have a back-story behind every song and historian showcased everything as best as is known.

A couple of things: 1) She is the most decorated female solider in history - according to all history I've read (and I'm a history nerd) 2) "Before women were allowed to serve" - most women did not WANT to go on the battlefield - especially after the first few months when men came home all broken and dismembered. 3) She lived a humble life after the war - her country did not take good care of her after the war (as to $$$$).

Ooph. You are my twelve year old self. You aren't wrong about having a backup weapon. You just lack the experiential references to understand that it doesn't matter. She didn't change the battle because she carried the standard, and the men fallowed it. She shifted the battle because the men followed her. Morale is a difficult thing to understand without experience.

yeah, seeing someone DO something can break a locked situation and start an avalanche of other actions. also those medals are HUGE! achievements, we are talking highest honors given to soldiers. @phildicks47215 ай бұрын
Yeah, she would have least been an NCO, so she would have had a pistol with her. But yes, Morale is one of the factors that people tend to overlook. Sometimes, if both sides are equal, its the factor that determines the winner...which side has the better Morale. In this case, the Serbians were fighting to defend their land against invaders.

Frags are just little bombs. She was known for her preference for grenades- you throw them at night, no one knows where it came from. "Bomber" is a lost in translation moment for English speakers.

Many people see the rules of warfare as something to come about after WW1. But the truth is that rules of warfare stretched as far back as the early bronze Era. During the expansionist Era, flag bearers were protected by international law as they were technically considered non-combatants. If they drew their sidearm, it was fair game though. After WW1 and the expansionist Era came to a close, the position of flag bearer became obsolete and only served as an honor guard or color guard position. Thus, the law protecting flag bearers has become obsolete. However, the law is still in effect. Like humanitarian workers (red cross and the like), Flag bearers are not to be targeted and attacked on the battlefield. You just don't see them because they are only in a nation's capital parading their flag around to bolster morale and support. In short, to attack the flag bearer is a war crime. It has happened, but most times it was on accident, or the bearer had drawn their weapon.
