I think they stretched it with the line, " with the Allies on their heel". Since it was mainly the British fleet. Along with a Polish destroyer that got in close. Signaled that they were a Polish vessel and opened fire. You also had an American Coast Guard ship that was almost torpedoed by the first air attack on the Bismarck. And a PBY Catalina piloted by an American.

Hood was a good ship just the bad design that really did it in

@@abluerx7371 wasnt even badly designed. Hood was a battleCRUISER, not a battleship, so her armour was thinner as a consequence. Even then, what happened to her was a result of extreme bad luck, a literal one in a million shot. It's worth noting that the Prince of Wales, far smaller, was still able to fight Bismark and Prince Eugen for a while alone afterwards before having to withdraw. Hoods destruction would never have happened without that lucky shot.

Interestingly enough, the KMS Bismarck was officially recorded and known as "he". One of the only exceptions to ships being feminine. That does not extend to his Sister ship Tirpitz though, "The queen of the north".
