In the actual battle, the rebels did use katana, yari, and yumi... AFTER they'd depleted all their guns and ammo! Samurai had been using guns since the 1500's and for a brief period, Japan had more guns than the rest of the world combined.

Kinda, the battle of shiroyama was the last battle of the satsuma rebellion. The samurai/peasant levy forces ran out of practical levels of ammo by the third battle as the supply lines were controlled by the imperial forces. By the final 5 or 6 battles they had dismissed the peasant levies and basically accepted that they would all die.

Check out history buff's historical review of the samurai I think he made some interesting comments. One being an artistic metaphorical comment about the scene where the calvary gets mowed down by gatling guns and how that can be interpreted as a metaphor for the new destroying the old.

Unrealistic to history or however fictional this is, I admit it warms my heart to see a force of ancient warriors charge into death for what they believe in. Yes, both imperials and samurai might not have been saints in reality, but I will allow myself some appriciation of a fictive badass battle with guns, swords, explosions and awesome music.

@@darraghnelson5012 not as much as you might think. Guns in that age were used more as massed fire, as a wall of lead if you want to simplify it. Bows and arrows were still vastly preferred for accuracy over anything beyond 200 meters. I also like that most people forget that due to the low quality steel Japan had natively, katanas were often weapons of last resort, with most samurai using spears or naginatas as their melee weapons of choice

While Japan modernizing itself was a wise decision. When I saw the death of Katsumoto and his fellow Samurai. I couldn't help but feel that same death happened to Japan's cultural identity as well. The love for the Kabuki theater, the sight of beautiful Geishas, intricate traditions like the tea ceremony, the beautifully rustic Feudal architecture. All of that is virtually dead by now, from what I've heard and Japan has officially become America: Vol 2 (or something like that)
