On a more dreary note, I want you to imagine this, *puts on writer's cap*: You and your comrades have been fighting those Germans for what has felt like eons. You and your group were assigned to Osowiec Fortress to defend it from an incoming German attack. You're fighting hard, you aren't giving up, and you haven't given them a bloody chance to kill you. Then, the air becomes thick and you start coughing up blood, as you look around and see everyone around you doing the same. They're falling, and so are you. You fall to the floor and close your eyes for a bit, and you open them back up. You aren't in Osowiec anymore, and you look the Grim Reaper right in the eyes. He asks, in a gravely and grim tone, "You have but one wish. Tell me what it is, and I will grant it." You take a quick glance around, and see all your comrades, and you smirk and know what everyone wants. "Our last wish?" You start, "Is to push those goddamned Germans out of Osowiec for good." The Grim Reaper lightly chuckles, and holds his skeletal hand out, and says "Then you shall." You close your eyes, and you open them again and you see the familiar sight of Osowiec. You get up, everything hurts. Your eyes, your lungs, your arms, everything. You push through the relentless pain, and in an adrenaline-fueled rage, as the rest of your comrades get up and cover their faces with whatever they can cover their mouths and noses with, and you grab your rifle. As soon as those Germans opened the fortress gates, you aimed your rifle and took a shot. The Germans look stunned as they watch one of their own fall. The rest of your comrades have taken up their arms, and you let out a loud warcry, and charge with the rest of your might towards the Germans. The rest of your comrades do too. Its incredibly unbearable, but you push through. You are no longer man, but an undead monster, and your only goal now is to push those Germans back. You hear the rest of your comrades let out their warcries, as the Germans flee in terror. You can't help but cough up blood every now and again. Your vision is getting blurry, but you can just make out them. You don't stop running, until you are dead. You refuse to die, until they are dead. You are a Russian, and you will fight for your nation until the bitter end.

The "problem" here is that the germans created a fow that had nothing to lose anymore, they basically were already dead. And nothing is more dangerous that an enemy that has nothing to lose. Usually soldiers surrender or flee as soon as a certain number (maybe 5-20%) of soldiers has fallen or is wounded, they lose their moral... but why would you ever stop fighting if you are going to die anyway?
