The powers of Europe starts to think that having large groups of men around with dubious loyalties and mercenary intentions is destabilizing. Nations learn how to nation-state and create great national armies. It's not an instant process, mercenaries still fill out the ranks but they start to learn how conscription into service and centralization works.

would the Swiss guard count as mercenaries? They were all catholic which means they were in a away citizens of the holy see.
@hannibalbarkas51106 жыл бұрын
Tarik360 Because of our mercenary history, mercenary work got banned in Switzerland somewhere between 1890-1930. The Swiss Guard is an official army (guard) of the pope and with that no mercenaries. The Swiss mercenaries (Reisläufer) were strong, brutal and skilled farmers which wanted to earn money. The Swiss fought in the „Gewalthaufen“ a fast, mobile square with tons of spikes. They ran straight into their enemies and did what they could do best. Fighting. In some period of European warfare, the numbers of Swiss mercenaries that an army had made a big impact on the outcome of the war. Most European leaders had Swiss Guards (mercenaries). If you want to know more about Swiss war history, just ask. I know a „little bit“. ^^

Short Story: he supported the french (after they gave him milan) to start a war that led to the landsknechts having to fight with barely any payment for months... and its not a good idea to frustrate the best mercenaries of your time... long story (read for better understanding): well during the Italian war of 1521 - 1526 the pope at first was allied with the HRE and the spanish... in a League against France, Venice and a few others who wanted to conquer stuff in italy that was part of the HRE (Spain back then was ruled by Charles V. who also was king of the HRE from the House of Habsburg) after Francis I captured Milan and gifted it to Clement VI. (by that time the pope after the one before him was it for one year...) the Papal States quickly changed their position and allied with France (despite one of the previous popes going the anti-french routes because of their alliance with the ottomans), even declaring Charles V. war for "unjust" (reminder... he went to war to defend the Empires posessions in Italy and was supported by the Pope before) so... after the battle of Pavia Francis of France was captured by Georg von Frundsberg, Landsknecht leader and called "Father of the Landsknechts" and hte Spanish... while prisoner he had to sign a peace treaty that gave the HRE some rather wealthy Cities... the tributes of which were intended to be used to pay... the mercenaries... since the Charles money was running low at that time the Mercenaries were to be payed with the tributes from those cities... After Charles was free again he quickly denounced the treaty and geared for war again... and Clement VI. supported him...so the peace treaty was void... no new cities for Charles... no payment for the Landsknechts... which by that time also had to care for themselves (food n stuff) Frundsberg (at that time in Germany again) raised a new Landsknecht army, a big bunch of which were protestants (like the ones still in italy) and so werent particulary fond of the pope to begin with... and crossed the alps... because of the bad state of the corwns purse he even sold his own silver ware and his wives jewelery... back in italy he unified these new troops with his old army this was at a time when the religious turmoil between Martin Luther and the Catholic church was broiling so... fast forward of a few months of warfare withotu decisive battles and irregular if any payment for the mercenaries...(the older ones NOT since PAVIA the year before the new war broke out) because of a war that might not have happened if a French king stood to his word or if the pope wouldnt have supported him... (or atleast they might've gotten payment if the pope would've stood at the HREs side)... during all this time (this and the war before)... they werent allowed to attack one certain enemy... the Pope... the Landknechts started a mutiny... they... wanted... their... money... (and i guess many here can understand it...)... up to that point the hope to sack rome held the troops together... start a siege and the pope surely wouldnt surrender the city... and then the law allowed them to plunder for 3 days... BUT there were rumours of an impeding peace treaty between the HRE and the Pope (if they were anything more than those i dont know)... so they started to demand their payment... Frundsberg tried to negotiate... for no avail.. the Landsknechts which he saw as and called his SONS werent persuaded... he suffered a stroke... which led the enraged Landsknechts without any leader whom the would really follow... nominally it now was Charles de Bourbon (who switched sides in the war before because differences between him and Francis)... yet he barely had any command... they first marched to Florence, but the city was well defended... and in the surrounding areas there was no food for the mercenaries... so they forced de Bourbon to lead them to Rome... a few italian Mercenaries that also werend fond of hte pope went along... one Cardinal (no Joke) and his mercenaries... bandits and all the stuff now we're at Rome... Clement tried to bribe Bourbon which he didnt accept nor would it 've used much... and the rest is history...

Pleased to see some pike formations here. I'm aware that the current Swiss Guard carry ceremonial halberds. But from my reading I'm confident that at the time of the sack of Rome, the Swiss were renowned (and in fact feared) as pikemen.
@grimsithe5 жыл бұрын
Yeah they were feared against by the French who was still relying on Heavy cavalry but Spanish/Imperial troops had developed beyond pike tactics into pike and shot tactics and destroyed Swiss mercenaries consistently (battle of Fornova) ie battle of Bicoca
@samuel.andermatt4 жыл бұрын
Swiss military units at the time had a mixture of different two handed polearms, including pikes, helbards and poleaxes, from my understanding. Pikes would build the front rows, but further behind different polearms were used.

Regardless of the full historical context, you gotta admit, those 189 Swiss Guard Members had some giant brass balls. If I've learned anything from listening to Sabaton and researching the people/battles they sing about is that in every war, on both sides, you have heroes and great acts of bravery and heroism.

The immortal swiss guard.
@ultrajd4 ай бұрын
I’m sure 99% of the people that are watching this already know. But for those that don’t let their flamboyant outfits and medieval style weaponry fool you. Each and everyone of the men that make up the Swiss guard are highly trained soldiers. In many ways, they are also quite literally VMO successful executive protection detail in human history. Not a single individual who has held. The paper seat has been killed while under the protection of the Swiss guard. Even individuals like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were not stupid enough to try and kill the pope. These men are extremely skilled, Pius and very, very dedicated to their position. Many of these men becoming a member of the Swiss guard has probably been an ambition for much of their life. And if I ever called correctly to this day, the men who fell during the sack of Rome are regularly venerated. I myself am not Catholic. But even I can stop and appreciate the skill of these very brave individuals.

“When Christ at a symbolic moment was establishing His great society, He chose for its cornerstone neither the brilliant Paul nor the mystic John, but a shuffler, a snob, a coward - in a word, a man. And upon this rock He has built His Church, and the gates of Hell have not prevailed against it. All the empires and the kingdoms have failed, because of this inherent and continual weakness, that they were founded by strong men and upon strong men. But this one thing, the historic Christian Church, was founded on a weak man, and for that reason it is indestructible. For no chain is stronger than its weakest link.” ― G.K. Chesterton, Heretics
