The battle of Passchendaele took around 4 months, with the British losing ~275,000 men and the Germans losing ~220,000 men. The British were only able to capture 6 miles in those 4 months, that makes ~82,500 dead men per mile. The Germans were able to recapture those 6 miles in a matter of weeks during the 1918 spring offensive.

did some math with the numbers you listed and got shocked. If my math is correct the British lost 28-29 men per meter they gained of the 6 miles. I am from Europe so had to calculate miles to kilometers :) That is insane to think about 28-29 men and that is only from the british side per meter.

Not to mention some men weren’t accounted for due to drowning in the mud too. Both sides suffered heavily from that too.

Imagine that in France there is a stretch of land some 1,200 square kilometers (460 sq mi) completely forbidden to anyone except sappers. These are remnants from the Battle of Verdum. Comprehensive sapper works were started only in the 1970s. Almost 50 years after the end of the fighting. The Department du Deminage was then established with the task of rehabilitating the red zone. The French hope that at the current rate of demining, they will be able to clear the entire area in 300 to 700 years. In 2005-06, research was carried out, during which it was estimated that there are about 300 unexploded ordnance on each hectare of land to a depth of 15 cm. It is estimated that during the period of ten months (that's how long the battle lasted) from February to December 1916, as many as 60 million shells were fired in this area!

This song always makes me sad, but I love it. The battle of Passchendaele is well-known here in Europe, I think the history of it isn't told in the US since it didn't involve Americans and the education system in the US isn't teaching about other countries' history so much.

Sabaton has the ability to reach into your soul and make you feel the despair and chaos of war. Their tales of sacrifice, honor, courage, and humanity should be required listening for every person. And the sad thing is the six miles the Allies gained were lost a few months later. Keep rocking.

HXC Sir I am a massive Sabaton Fan and have been for years, I am also a fan of history especially military history since I was a young boy. I have many books, DVDS and military maps about wars and conflicts, which I have collected over the years and I have spoken to Veterans of WW2 ( British). Even though WW2 was the most deadliest and most horrific war with despicable acts of murder in human history, to me the stories of what the Soldiers went through in the trenches are worse as they had to suffer more hardships than in WW2. There are stories of men actually being eaten alive by rats while they are asleep. Wounded men actually drowning in mud and other horrific stories also the really sad stories of innocent men being executed for what we know now as PTSD or they were just completely exhausted and tired, but back in WW1 was treated as being a coward in the face of the enemy. WW1 on the Battlefield like Passchendaele, the Somme, Ypes etc etc were just places of slaughter, anguish, disease, depression, rats, explosions, corpses, smell, sewage, blood, body parts, destruction and death. Personally the battlefields of WW1 were hell on earth and those who went through it and survived lost their youth, there soul, there innocence, there humanity, that sparkle in their eyes and their light of life. Politician's cause wars and conflicts so politician's should do the fighting in my opinion. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

I've said it before that the best thing Sabaton does is see these soldiers as more than people. These were fathers, sons, plumbles, teachers, poets, uncles, bus drivers, etc... Too often we just study it and see oh 500,000 people died and move on. We might not know what they looked like exactly but you see a face in each of these soldiers and see the fear, anguish, trauma that they must've gone through. And it makes you sad about their deaths.

I went to the cemetery in Passendale during Covid. Very strange feeling there. Just a serene and flowy green landscape and then a big cemetery. Crazy dichotomy. By the way, if you ever visit Belgium you Must go to the Menin Gate and Flanders Fields museum in Ieper/Ypres.

this is also known as Third Battle of Ypres. There is a good movie on it showing the Canadians during the attack "Passchendaele" (2008) well worth a watch.

Sabaton is the only band who can make me cry. They’re so good at making the listener feel a particular feeling with their songs like how Red Baron is meant to make you feel the highs of an ace fighter pilot.

Some outtakes from diaries from ww1 painted a picture of what it was like trying to push. It was a sea of mud, so planks were placed to run on a single line. If someone misstep/fall/shelled off balance, ending up in the mud, you leave them to die, well you can stop and help but then you would halt the entire company. Imagine passing your friend, leave him/her to die because the alternative would cause substantial more more deaths...

For comparison, if the battle tempo of the battle of Passchendaele kept on going as it did during the battle, most of the worlds population would be dead before the Entente reached Berlin. And if they wanted to reach the capital of Prussia - Königsberg, it would cost the entire human population of Earth.

It's funny because both my great grandfathers fought in WW1 on my mother side my great grandfather was at the Somme with the Manchester regiment then my great grandfather on my dad's side was Passchendaele thats where he was killed fighting along side the Belgium, Canadian hell even Australian troops my great grandfather who was at the Somme lost an eye and was gassed but he was lucky one to make it back home Also forgot to mention the armies during WW1 shot there own troops if they refused to fight and labelled coward's the correct term is Desertion I know for a fact that the British shot over 100 men of there own for cowardice the French, German and Russians did the same

If you walk on average 3 mph and you walk the 6 miles, about 70 people would die per second during that walk.

So as you said in the video, it is hard to visualise the numbers included in battles such as in this song which is based on 'the battle of passchendaele' but you can think of it in numbers from events, ie sup0er bowl attendance is around 60,000 people and Passchendaele resulted in around 500,000 casualties on both sides so around 8 and a half super bowls full of men.

It's almost 3 times more people died in that battle then people in the city where i live. It's hard to imagine how many. Good reaction and well a "good" song.
