Historic fact: it was an habit to reward the pilots with a silver medal for each enemy killed. Manfred Von Richtofen took down 80 enemies but only received 60 medals because german silver supplies were declining and he wouldn't accept bronze medals.

Fun Fact... due to having 3 wings, the red baron was actually slower than other aircrafts.. the 3 wings generated more lift at slower speeds than simply 1 or 2 wings and was more maneuverable thus making him able to kill all hiss opponents by just making moves they were too fast to do

in the case of the DR.1 3 wings give more lift than 2 at same wingspan meaning they could shorten the wingspan and still have more lift. and the wingspan was one of the biggest brakes on rotating the aircraft and with that maneuverability back then. combine this with that British aircrafts like the Sopwith Camel had an radial rotary engine that while made more power making em bit faster but they had enormous rotational inertia because the whole block of the engine was rotating making em very tricky to fly and they really liked to only turn to right and downwards... an effect Manfred was more than happy to exploit.

Triplanes were indeed more maneuverable, but it's important to note that Richthofen actually flew the Dr1 for a very short time. It's famous just because it was the plane he was killed in. Most of his aerial victories were in the Albatross biplane.
