The mouth harp and flute is a hommage to Auides career as a movie star after WWII. It was these kinds of films in the Spaghetti Western genre but with war theme. Audie played himself in the films about the wars he participated in. One of the films name were To hell and back.

Audie got over his addiction and managed his ptsd to became a successful western movie star after the war, they actually showed some scenes of him from his movies in the video. he died in a plane crash, not from his other problems.

The "whistling" was used to make it feel like an old western movie.

Thanks for your thoughtful reaction! Audie's book, To Hell and Back, is worth every penny. He describes his harsh, poverty-stricken childhood, with a dad who makes a lot of kids and then deserts the family. In the book, he describes his fighting in WW2, and mentions another soldier as writing the poem "The Crosses Grow at Anzio," but it is Audie's poem, incorporating what another soldier had said, that hell is six feet deep. He got the Medal of Honor for his actions in Holtzwier, France. Trip Advisor has a lot of info, or just a online search of "audie murphy memorial in holtzwier." In short, during winter and snow, he and his soldiers were suddenly facing a field with a hundred or more German soldiers approaching with 6 tanks. Audie's two tank destroyers were knocked out of being able to fight. Audie saw that his group would be slaughtered, so he ordered all his men back, and stayed by himself, calling in artillery strikes. One of the tank destroyers was on fire, but Audie jumped on top, found the machine gun in working order, and started firing at the German troops, who couldn't see where the gunfire was coming from, due to smoke from artillery strikes and the burning tank. The Germans didn't think that anyone would be nuts enough to be on top of a burning tank. Audie is famous for a few sayings. When the artillery guys on the phone asked Audie how close the Germans were, he said just hold the phone and I'll let you talk to one of them!. He also said that being on the burning tank was the first time his feet had been warm all winter. There's also something else he said, that he just imagined that each German soldier had the face of his father, and that kept him shooting. Later in his life, along with the PTSd that never went away, he would get emotional about the men he'd killed, and the orphans he'd made. He was a bit of a terror on the set, as he felt nothing in common with the actors, and spent time with the stunt and set crew, gambling. His gambling addition, due probably to PTSd, lost him a lot of the money he'd made. Also, he played himself in the film "To Hell and Back," filmed in mild weather near Yakima, WA. It probably didn't help his PTSd to act in the scenes that had caused him so much pain, including the deaths of his combat buddies. This film is really worth watching! Shortly before he died in the plane crash, he visited Arlington Cemetery to make arrangements for his burial there. Because he was a Medal of Honor recipient, Arlington staff explained that he qualified for a special headstone, with the Medal of Honor symbol in gold. Audie insisted on a plain headstone, as he never considered himself a hero. As for his Westerns, they were termed "B" Westerns and ran about 90 minutes. But, even when Westerns declined in the 60s, people kept going to see Audie's movies. Audiences just liked watching a real warrior in a Western. Some of my favorite are The Kid from Texas and No Name on the Bullet, but I think they are all good. I was reading about Audie online, and found that his son, Terry, had approved of a Swedish heavy metal band's song about his dad. So, I listened to the song, saw the video, and decided I needed to hear this song in a concert. That's how I learned about Sabaton. If you want to see a large audience in Europe singing this song, knowing the words, and a small audience in Portland, OR singing this song, knowing the words, check out these: Sabaton - To Hell and Back live at Wacken Open Air 2019 Sabaton - Fear of the Dark 1st verse + To Hell and Back [Live in Portland 9/17/22] Anyway, beware of the Sabaton effect of suddenly needing to know more, much more, about the history of their songs! Some of the reported effects are being patriotic for countries that aren't yours, spending hours on the Sabaton History Channel and other KZbin related videos, and without being able to control impulses, buying tickets and traveling to far-off places, such as Holtzwier just to see the memorial. Everyone in that little town knows Audie, and says that he was a hero.

Thx for an awesome reaction. I don’t see it as uplifting music, I see the music in this video as anger and frustration. Seems more appropriate to the subject. Take care mate and pls react to more Sabaton videos.

You really have to go and check out "sabaton History Channel" -kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGGzo5yLo6Z9abcsi=aIbvoMI-oj_v_WiZ , then go back and listen to song as you will have a better understanding of the lyrics and story. plus some of the lyrics are from Audie's poem "Crosses grow on Anzio" also Audie always had his 1911a1 Pistol with him even on film sets.

As a Brit i find it amazing that an American is ignorant of Audie Murphy - the most decorated US soldier of WWII. It was virtually impossible to watch a Western during the 1950s that didn't feature him? The "action" clips in this video are from the big studio film To Hell and Back starring Audie as himself.

I know what you mean! I should know this stuff! But I’m glad you brought it to my attention! Thank you very much! flattered that someone who isn't American knows who he is. I haven't seen any 50's Western movies so maybe that's why I haven't heard of him. But A big part of this channel is discovery and learning so I'm happy to know who Audie is now. Chester W. Nimitz, Douglas MacArthur, D. Eisenhower, S. Patterson, Omar Bradley are some names I'm familiar with. I Think Audie's acting career made him more of a 1950's acting staple and that's why I haven't heard of him. The other generals I mentioned are more regarded as historical figures where as Audie's acting career plays a big part on who he was meaning I would have had to take an interest in old westerns to discover him. In other words I think his acting career shadowed his military service which is a little ironic given that's partly why he was in western films' in the first place. unfortunately I'm not from a generation that was around old classic movies. I came to this conclusion after searching Audie online and most of the information is about his acting career and very little about his military service which I find unfortunate. Anyways, I'm glad you know who he was, I think that's very honoring. And thank you for hanging out and coming to the channel !
