High above in the alps close to heaven, in the most extreme circumstances, men fought and protected the borders during WWI. At 23:30 on April 17, 1916, the Italians, who were up against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, detonated 5,000kg of Nitro-Gelatine to secure the Col di Lana summit. My great grandfather fought for Finland during the winter-war. He never came home and his body was never recovered. It's just so horrible that he didn't get a real funeral. All I know is that his final resting place is somewhere out in the finnish woods. I also know that he is still till this day guarding his post in those same woods. Rest in peace great grandfather Birger Nylund, in my heart you truly are the soldier of heaven. My hero! Salute!❤️🇫🇮👋

@@coltnorr4638 Maybe you are right. But I find also the presence of a red Fokker Dr. 1 quite a nonsense over the Alps. Usually their videos are very accurate historically, and since this celebrates a front that is rarely talked about, I would have preferred something more specifically inherent to the exploits of Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers. Music is extraordinary as always, of course, but the graphics sector seems to me a lost opportunity.

I listened to it this morning with no idea of the story. Learning the story of White Friday made me realize how powerful the song is. As every Sabaton song does for the story they are based on. Even to those who serve today, they risk their life to keep their country safe. All give some, but some give all. My great grandfather fought on the Alps in WWI, from 1915 to 1918. They told me that even decades later, during the 60s, he woke up once late in the night and left home, saying only, with despair in his eyes, "They broke at Caporetto, i must go back". He served as an Alpino. Even if he survived, the war never left him. I really appreciate the song as a tribute to those who had to endure those inhuman conditions, thanks for remembering those who fought.

Some historical context: Aside from the Italian Alps front, this song is referencing 2 particular events. "White Friday" was a series of avalanches that caused the deaths of 10,000 soldiers from all sides when all was said and done. "Blood Mountain" was the nickname given to a multi-year long struggle for 1 mountain (Col di Lana) in which neither side had any clear winner. Its tragic that the front is not talked about as much as it should be considering how hard both sides fought in the region. Thank Sabaton for immortalizing and honoring those sacrifices in song.

Believe it or not, the music Sabaton created about our fallen, about the wars, the meanings and truths behind a lot of the evils of the world, it actually saved my life. I suffer from depression and severe anxiety, (thanks OIF lol) but listening to them helps me focus, and live for my fallen brothers (from combat, and the struggles within) and my family. Thanks for being awesome and supportive, and thank you for once again topping it off with a fucking outstanding track that I can rock out to and remember what's important to me! SFMF!

As the great-grandson of Tyrolean Kaiserjäger this means so much to me. Plus, the fact that it was published on the day of the "Drei Könige / Befana" is particularly special. In Tyrol we speak 4 main languages, and my family has been divided on both sides of the Alps, so the message of peace is always so very important, whether you swear allegiance to the Empire or to the Republic. As we would say: "Nimmar Kriag! Bašta viera! Nicht mehr Krieg! Basta guerra!"

No body to be brought home for a proper burial because it wasn’t ever recovered or there was nothing left of it to identify who the soldier was. This man died on the alps, very dangerous to retrieve bodies from atop a mountain and the ice and snow easily cover them up so they can never be found. Man, I wish your songs didn't make me sad 90% of the time. Such a bop, but so sad... "I will guard this post forever" is such a powerful line. It reminds me of the last verse in a Vazov poem, called "The new cemetery over Slivnitsa" about a decrepit and abandoned military cemetery he visited. " Rest here, under these tombs of ice You won't hear again a clarion or a chief Or the thunders of your glorious fights. Your final march is towards eternity - Heroes, rest in peace" The entire poem is very beautiful and my translation would, obviously, not do it justice, but it's exactly what this song reminds me of: People who just died and were forgotten - only their mothers felt their absence and remembered their names. it's just ridiculously sad. I also love how the WW1 planes in the video transition into WW2 planes.

White Friday, as they say in the chorus, refers to an avalanche that killed many austro-hungarian soldiers in 1916. The same day, other avanches killed other soldiers, both austro-hungarian and italian. I think that this song is dedicated to these forgetten soldiers too. They fell in the field although not in combat and they're heroes like the others.

Plato's philosophy about war is probably right on, but also gloomy. So, keeping Plato in mind, I'll also keep Thomas Paine in mind, with the quote from his 1776 pamphlet Common Sense. Get rid of kings, stop seeking "leaders," and we can enjoy peace, with peaceful transition of public servants the goal. "In the early ages of the world, according to the scripture chronology, there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throws mankind into confusion." ― Thomas Paine, Common Sense

My great grandfather was a Hauptmann (equivalent of capitan) in the slovenian homeguard regiments of the austro-hungarian hungarian army. He was present in 10 of 12 battles of Isonzo. When he returned home he burned his uniforn, insignia and medal. The only story he shared was of a battle when italian troops were attacking up a ridge under them and they were shooting down on them them like they were rabbits (his words). When they ran out of ammunition they started hurling rocks and boulders towards them and managed to repel the attack. He told his wife that no matter how much he prays his ticket to hell is already booked. Italian lads had the "luxury" of going directly to hell but he had to live with what he saw and did for another 50 years. In his words: i cannot find a valid reason what was the point of it. My generation did what we did, noone of us is proud of it. Your generation must realize what to do of it. The least you can do is trust us to never do it again... If u cant already tell im hyped for this one. Just the fact that Isonzo or Soča is less than 40km from my home

Sabaton is hands down my favorite band. In a world hellbent on tearing itself apart and history dies in darkness, Sabaton brings little pieces of it back to light. Their sound is absolutely incredible. I can listen to Steel Commanders and metal out, or I can listen to Soldier of Heaven and be moved to tears. They may just be one of the most if not the most important band alive.

My Great Grandfather was part of this battle on the Allied side as part of the French Foreign Legion. He survived and later immigrated to the USA in 1919 and immediately started sponsoring everyone he could from his and his wife's family to get them out of Czechoslovakia as they were in the Sudetenland and they knew it was a matter of time before the Germans made a push again. What family they did not get out prior to 1938 was sent to Dachau and Treblinka worked to death and is gone. Yeah all of these people who don't like metal like Sabaton because they are catchy pop rock with a cool theme, which is fine but I don't think it's fair to say they are one of the greatest metal bands for that. That would be like saying Metallica is a legendary metal band because they released The Black Album, when in reality The Black Album had sales but all of the material that made Metallica even slightly relevant to metal music had already come out at that point. Sabaton isn't really doing anything of note musically or within metal to be put in such high regards imo.

This was a nice video-not as edgy as I expected, but not pabulum, either. Sabaton always delivers. And then came the end, the tombstone for the fighters who never came home. My husband (retired military) and I both teared up. Thank you, Sabaton, for making folks aware that there are remains out there in unmarked graves, and families who have always hoped their loved ones would come home. Be it in a box or otherwise. The Italians and Austro-Hungarians fought on those peaks; trench warfare in the alps. With the diabolical Luigi Cadorna as general, nearly 700,000 Italians were sent to their deaths trying to fight a literal uphill battle against machine-guns and artillery for the first time. Truly the most brutal (and forgotten) front in the entirety of World War One. And in the end, the British Empire (my country) never gave them the land they were promised after the war was won. These heroes were lost for nothing. Great song, I, most certainly, will never forget the Italian front. 🇮🇹🤝🇬🇧

I feel a large problem with the UK in World War style peace treaties, it has too many allies, and it realistically needs to provide for itself. Take WW1, do you help Italy or Serbia USA or Japan? Small choices may seem insignificant at times, but they can always cause a large effect.

You have to imagine one of the most beautiful scenaries /mountainscapes in the world, like right out of a fantasy movie (like lord of the rings). And right in the middle you find all the bunkers, bullets, trenches that are still mostly untouched from a century ago, and with the cold in your face and the pain in your calfs from hours of hiking you start just a little bit to get a grasp of the terror those people had to endure. Truly heartbreaking.

But I swear, I've never seen any other human who was in so much pain as he was whenever he remembered the war. What I wanna say is, dont ask for stories. War rips your soul apart. Those who were involved in combat will always dread the idea of remembering those events

Sabaton is the first group I've really wanted to see perform live. Sadly missed them because the last US tour was cancelled before they came to my area. I'd love to see a headline tour here, I think there's enough of a fan base for it to work. Another epic song, can't wait to hear the rest of the album when it's released.

I've seen them three times. Best shows of my life. They always invite young kids up to meet the band, and did like four encore songs, that everyone was singing along with. Very good times.

I wrote down the lyrics the best I could. Cheers: [Lyrics] I won't be coming home I won't be going anywhere I will guard this post forever Here on the alpine slope Where I did my finest and I shall remain Among the ice and snow that binds me to this mountain A force of nature too strong, Sent from above Where spirits lead the way Their wings will never fade White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven I saw the end of war I watch the soldiers come and go And I kept my watch forever So many great men fell, In the battles that were raging down below I have seen it all, but none will hear my story All of these years I have been, Frozen in time I crave for spring to come, But here, winter remain White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven [Solo] I always dreamed that I would, Serve high above Where spirits lead the way Their wings will never fade White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal! Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven!

I'm not even a historian but I find it sad that as little as 105-110 years later things like this are largely if not entirely forgotten.
