My great grandfather fought on the Alps in WWI, from 1915 to 1918. They told me that even decades later, during the 60s, he woke up once late in the night and left home, saying only, with despair in his eyes, "They broke at Caporetto, i must go back". Some historical context: Aside from the Italian Alps front, this song is referencing 2 particular events. "White Friday" was a series of avalanches that caused the deaths of 10,000 soldiers from all sides when all was said and done. "Blood Mountain" was the nickname given to a multi-year long struggle for 1 mountain (Col di Lana) in which neither side had any clear winner. Its tragic that the front is not talked about as much as it should be considering how hard both sides fought in the region. Thank Sabaton for immortalizing and honoring those sacrifices in song.

@@TheAntarcticFed This song is dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, soldiers who were never found and presumed killed in action. No body to be brought home for a proper burial because it wasn’t ever recovered or there was nothing left of it to identify who the soldier was. This man died on the alps, very dangerous to retrieve bodies from atop a mountain and the ice and snow easily cover them up so they can never be found. The soldier now stands at his final post alone on top of that mountain forever. He watches as planes from ww1 fight overhead but later its planes from ww2, showing the passing of time

Man, I wish your songs didn't make me sad 90% of the time. Such a bop, but so sad... "I will guard this post forever" is such a powerful line. It reminds me of the last verse in a Vazov poem, called "The new cemetery over Slivnitsa" about a decrepit and abandoned military cemetery he visited. " Rest here, under these tombs of ice You won't hear again a clarion or a chief Or the thunders of your glorious fights. Your final march is towards eternity - Heroes, rest in peace" The entire poem is very beautiful and my translation would, obviously, not do it justice, but it's exactly what this song reminds me of: People who just died and were forgotten - only their mothers felt their absence and remembered their names. it's just ridiculously sad. I also love how the WW1 planes in the video transition into WW2 planes.

White Friday, as they say in the chorus, refers to an avalanche that killed many austro-hungarian soldiers in 1916. The same day, other avanches killed other soldiers, both austro-hungarian and italian. I think that this song is dedicated to these forgetten soldiers too. They fell in the field although not in combat and they're heroes like the others.

Plato's philosophy about war is probably right on, but also gloomy. So, keeping Plato in mind, I'll also keep Thomas Paine in mind, with the quote from his 1776 pamphlet Common Sense. Get rid of kings, stop seeking "leaders," and we can enjoy peace, with peaceful transition of public servants the goal. "In the early ages of the world, according to the scripture chronology, there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throws mankind into confusion." ― Thomas Paine, Common Sense

My great grandfather was a Hauptmann (equivalent of capitan) in the slovenian homeguard regiments of the austro-hungarian hungarian army. He was present in 10 of 12 battles of Isonzo. When he returned home he burned his uniforn, insignia and medal. The only story he shared was of a battle when italian troops were attacking up a ridge under them and they were shooting down on them them like they were rabbits (his words). When they ran out of ammunition they started hurling rocks and boulders towards them and managed to repel the attack. He told his wife that no matter how much he prays his ticket to hell is already booked. Italian lads had the "luxury" of going directly to hell but he had to live with what he saw and did for another 50 years. In his words: i cannot find a valid reason what was the point of it. My generation did what we did, noone of us is proud of it. Your generation must realize what to do of it. The least you can do is trust us to never do it again... @@Ozku9 Well done, you think that the Ukrainians are heroes, my great-grandfather is from Zhitomir, but you write that if it weren't for the Americans, then we would be sitting in the gulag, I'm not saying that the Americans and the British are not heroes, I believe that the winners are all those who invested in victory, but I wrote that I do not agree with the fact that the Soviet soldiers were compared with the Germans and the Japanese ... And one more thing, you think that the Soviet soldiers wanted to invade Europe, you are wrong! The government wanted to seize Europe, but not ordinary soldiers, they fought not for power, but really helped the Europeans, but unfortunately, because of Stalin and his policy of occupation, all of Europe considers ordinary soldiers to be the occupants

I must say that this song hits differently, i dont know why. I'm a fan of sabaton since ive been 14, now im 28. And during this song i got emotional. This is not a song that will start a moshpit during a concert. This is the one that will see thousands of people standing still and singing in unison, with their lighters and hands in the air, like the classics of "old" metal.

✨💖✨So here I am, an old lady, a veteran, a metal head, and maybe just a tad jaded. But I love Sabaton, their music, their love of history, and that they sing the songs of the un-sung hero. This was a nice video-not as edgy as I expected, but not pabulum, either. Sabaton always delivers. And then came the end, the tombstone for the fighters who never came home. My husband (retired military) and I both teared up. Thank you, Sabaton, for making folks aware that there are remains out there in unmarked graves, and families who have always hoped their loved ones would come home. Be it in a box or otherwise. Thank you for teaching history and the horrors of war to a new generation.

The Italians and Austro-Hungarians fought on those peaks; trench warfare in the alps. With the diabolical Luigi Cadorna as general, nearly 700,000 Italians were sent to their deaths trying to fight a literal uphill battle against machine-guns and artillery for the first time. Truly the most brutal (and forgotten) front in the entirety of World War One. And in the end, the British Empire (my country) never gave them the land they were promised after the war was won. These heroes were lost for nothing. Great song, I, most certainly, will never forget the Italian front. 🇮🇹🤝🇬🇧

I feel a large problem with the UK in World War style peace treaties, it has too many allies, and it realistically needs to provide for itself. Take WW1, do you help Italy or Serbia USA or Japan? These questions, these choices eventually led to the hate and discontent that led to the rise of men like Mussolini and Tojo. Small choices may seem insignificant at times, but they can always cause a large effect.

I encourage everyone who ever gets the chance to go visit the dolomites / isonzo front. I was at a lot of places around the world, this one was propably the most impactfull. You have to imagine one of the most beautiful scenaries /mountainscapes in the world, like right out of a fantasy movie (like lord of the rings). And right in the middle you find all the bunkers, bullets, trenches that are still mostly untouched from a century ago, and with the cold in your face and the pain in your calfs from hours of hiking you start just a little bit to get a grasp of the terror those people had to endure. Truly heartbreaking.

Soldier of Heaven I saw the end of war I watch the soldiers come and go And I kept my watch forever So many great men fell, In the battles that were raging down below I have seen it all, but none will hear my story All of these years I have been, Frozen in time I crave for spring to come, But here, winter remain White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven [Solo] I always dreamed that I would, Serve high above Where spirits lead the way Their wings will never fade White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die... I'll be immortal Forever... I never... I won't return to That mountain... I am the... Soldier of Heaven White Friday... I'll take the... Stairway to Heaven I'm sky high... When I die...
