It should also be mentioned Ozzy's father died in 1977 which may have played a part in the alcohol abuse, he sings about it (quiet well) in the 1978 album Never Say Die on the song Juniors Eyes...all the original member Sabbath albums were fantastic!! Edit: also, keep in mind it's been over 50 years since their first album and all 4 members are still alive and kicking!!

I don't know, even Tony and other Sabbath members admit that Never Say Die was a poor album, and Technical Ecstasy was only marginally better. Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules were much better albums.

However, I did see them in late 1981 at the Spectrum in Philly for the Mob Rules tour, which was my first-ever music concert. It was about a month after I'd turned 14 years old. In order for me to have seen BS before Ozzy was fired, I'd have been 10 years old, but at that point I was into KISS, having recently gotten my 1st album of their's(Destroyer), and hadn't even heard Sabbath yet. Two years later i saw Ozzy for the Bark @ the Moon tour, with Motley Crue as the opening act(Shout @ the Devil tour). Then I saw Dio doing his Sacred Heart tour.

True story from my weed dealer- Dio and Ozzy had the same weed dealer in Burbank. Dio is there and about to leave when Ozzy shows up and the dealer says lets smoke the peace pipe of special reserve. So the 3 get to smoking. and a conversation ensues. Ozzy tells Dio that It was hard being fired but that after the personal bitterness faded he respected the decision and loved the Dio era albums. As Sabbath was always Iommis band. Ozzy also stated that The 1st time he heard Ronnie was in Elf opening for Deep Purple where Elf covered War pigs. Ronnie replied That he always loved original Sabbath and singing along to the tunes. he just hated singing them with Sabbath. Just then the weed dealer took too big of a hit and was coughing when Dio started singing sweet leaf and Ozzy joined in. The dealer then handed Ozzy a harmonica he had stashed in the coffe table. Ozzy played while Dio sang the wizard... after they all settled down jamming and high as hell. Dio tells Ozzy. I have now sang for every original Sabbath member making me the Ultimate Metal God ...and As Great as I am You cannot spell Idiot without Dio. Ozzy erupts in laughter and says I cant spell my name without looking at my knuckles. The 2 greats laugh it all out. and as they get up to go. they look at each other from their limos and Ozzy gives Dio the Devil horns.

@@CatDaddySteve I've seen them live 30 times including their first tour of the United States at the Carolina Jubilee in Chapel Hill North Carolina 1970. I was also at the heaven & hell concert September 26th 1980 at the Charlotte Coliseum. That was my first time seeing Ronnie James Dio fronting Black Sabbath and was totally Blown Away by his vocal performance. There were a lot of things said between Ozzy and Ronnie back then and written about in The Press. That's why enjoyed his story so much they both got along so well! Cheers

Indeed. Though there were other bands making heavy music, Sabbath were doing it earlier and heavier than anyone else. Not even Judas Priest went as heavy as Sabbath did in the 70s, though they did break new ground when it came to speed. Moreover, besides Iommi's riffwriting talent, simply using distortion as heavy as that was a groundbreaking thing in 1970. And like so many other groundbreaking things, Sabbath was often misunderstood and undervalued by its contemporaries.

"Never Say Die" had a couple decent tracks, but it was no "Paranoid". This period gave us the GREAT "Heaven and Hell" with DIO at his best. It all worked out in the end, and these guys are STILL producing great music...Note: I was 16 in '78 when I bought "Never say Die" and Rainbow's "Long Live Rock and Roll" at the same time. The good old days, for sure....

A matter of taste. Can't stand "Heaven and Hell" and prefer "Never Say Die" far above "Paranoid". The only problem with "Never Say Die" is the sound engineering was poor. Sabbath needed outside help to get a better recording of the material. I'm talking general mic technique, sound levels, mixing, etc.

I liked Sabbath when I got older, but in my early teens it was too melancholy and dark. But I loved Ozzy. Loved him. One of my all time favorite vocalists and rock performers even though I was at the concert where he sounded horrendous and the reason being he had a heart attack. And Ronnie James Dio songs like Man on the Silver Mountain are rock/metal classics as well. But Ozzy is a genius. His voice on Changes is so haunting it makes you feel like you just broke up with someone and had your heart ripped out every time you hear it. Ozzy is spiritual beyond most any performer. And what he and Randy Rhodes did.. incredible.

I saw Black Sabbath only one time, the Technical Ecstasy tour. I distinctly remember two things about that concert...Ted Nugent opened up for them, he showed lots of energy, running around the stage and lots of screaming and yelling and making his Gibson Byrdland wail. Then Tony Iommi coming out and pretty much standing in one spot the whole show letting his fingers do the work, he was awesome. The other thing I remember was that Ozzy had a roadie off stage left working as his personal bartender. Ozzy was drunk and sloppy, which was a damn shame because the band was so tight.

Good day, I was at the "Never Say Die" concert in Portland,Or, early '79. It was my 8th time seeing them Live 😃 and it was fantastic, as ALWAYS. And this new band, with an amazing guitarist, vocalist that could jump as if he had an invisible trampoline, and a bassist that could sing excellent backing/harmonizing. I hadn't really heard a lot of them at the time as they were new. Yep, Van Halen... Phenomenal show, WELL WORTH the $5.00, (for you young 'uns, most shows normally cost that much back then). Eddy was still turning his back to the audience during certain licks, so we guitarists couldn't steal them 😂. Man, the 70s and 80s were just kick ass times for live shows. 😃 😃 😃

@@barbarafogle3541 Good day, Absolutely. He was known for doing this in the clubs because, at the time, Eddy was doing amazing things with the guitar, that had never been done. He didn't want other guitarists stealing his Licks before they, Van Halen, were signed. This carried on through their first tour, perhaps out of habit. If you notice, it didn't take long for other guitarists to start using his technique after Van Halen's first album, thus, he wasn't being "Paranoid", 😂 pardon the pun 😂

Sorta gave up on new stuff after Vol IV though a friend bought everything. I bought SBS and Sabotage way later. Heaven And Hell another bought new by that guy. Staggering ! I disagree that Ozzy's drug use was the same as the other three. On the Technical Ecstasy tour Ozzy disappeared several times, especially as the news of his father's illness reached them. Bill Ward filled the vocals a few times then Dave Walker was almost signed when Ozzy came back. There was also the infamous Alamo urination. Don't forget that they had recently found all their money had been mismanaged (to be polite). They probably saved Ozzy's life from slow poisoning. Remember these were not psychiatrists or saints, they were rockers handling the problem the best way they knew. Shock therapy, if you will. When Blizzard came out it was absolutely amazing. Shocking, even. Without Randy I doubt a comeback would have happened.

Ozzy had reached a point where very few would have bet on him. And after the firing I think his confidence was nearly shot. Not a big Sharon fan, but it must be admitted that she saw something in him -- a potential and attractive charisma hidden behind his depression and drugged-out withdrawal. In spite of his failings and weaknesses, she believed in him and had all the right connections. Then it all came together with Randy and the boys, like you said. I guess "shock therapy" sometimes works!

I agree as well. Ozzy was way more of loose cannon out of control with his addiction far worse than the other band members. And it really was lucky that he found Randy and was able to turn it around. I am still amazed because after reading Off the Rails by Rudy Sarzo Ozzy cancels like every other show on that tour. If Blizzard and Diary hadn't been such great albums out of the gate I think Ozzy would have probably drank himself to death if his solo band failed.

I did not mean to excuse Ozzy's misbehavior at all. But the facts must be considered. As a child his learning disability possibly dyslexia with a natural tendency to worry left him a nervous sort always trying to prove he wasn't just a "back Street kid". He loved the stage but felt so keyed up after he couldn't sleep. This is what is said about Keith Moon: a few drinks was what it took to get to bed. Then later a few bottles. Ozzy was a perfect candidate to become "Rat Salad" at the "Hand of Doom", a heroin needle. Also he and Tony did not exactly get along. There are indicators Tony was kind of a bully to Ozzy in high school. But they tried to keep it professional. Still it's not easy for a nervous worrywart like Ozzy to deal with especially when they found out their manager left them broke and the first six album's songs, cars, houses, everything were all licensed in his name, not the band members. Court battles are hard on the digestion and that good REM sleep. Then his dad got sick and died, one of very few people Ozzy could rely on. After his father's death the alcohol really caught up to him, plus eight records and eight tours in about as many years. He was burned out and grieving and on stage every night. I'm a bit surprised he didn't go postal or something. Say what you will about the VILE Digital Bitch but she did keep him alive. (And I was at Ozzfest 1993 in Cali where she put roadies and goons and that unmistakable hulking not-Jake E. Lee to disrupt the Iron Maiden show. They threw eggs at Nicko McBrain one of the nicest guys ever.)

For me, personally, Sabbath was only Sabbath with the original lineup. I wasn't really a big Dio fan, but I was an Ozzy fan. Also, the first five Sabbath albums were definitely the best. Things started to go downhill after Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Similarly, with Ozzy's solo albums, the first five or six albums were the best ones (and of course, nothing compares to the first two). I think there may be a hard limit on how many really good albums a single group can produce before they run out of steam. The Beatles are on the high end of the scale, but perhaps it is more of a timespan thing than a fixed number of albums or songs (the Beatles were only releasing albums for seven years).

I saw Black Sabbath at Painters Mill, MD. The back up band was... Fleetwood Mac! Unfortunately the crowd got out of control and pushed a young woman through the glass door. Sabbath panicked and left after 45 minutes. I had front row seats in front of a speaker. They did the intro to "Iron Man" and almost blew out my ears.

Ozzy started selling platinum albums and selling out arenas while Sabbath was barely selling small theaters or clubs. Look at the #'s for albums sold in the U.S. Blizzard of Oz= 5,000,000 vs. Heaven And Hell=1,000,000. Diary Of A Madman=3,000,000 vs. Mob Rules=500,000. I saw that tour of 78 in Nashville..the riot gig. I was up front and when they announced that they were rescheduling Sabbath and no sooner had the guy said it the crowd erupted. Someone threw a Jack Daniels bottle thru Bill Ward's drumhead. Then they smashed Municipal Auditorium to pieces. Fights everywhere. This was on a Friday. They rescheduled for that Sunday afternoon. VH opened again..this time a shorter set. Sabbath comes up. Ozzy can't sing for shite. He is basically screeching. Iommi looks embarrassed. But Bill Ward still kicked ass. Retitle the video. "How we made the same mistake as Hawkwind and our singer went on to blow us smooth out of the water just a couple years later". Sabbath was great with Dio. I love Dio. But they were better with Ozzy. And they definitely weren't as big as what they were with Ozzy. And for sure didn't dominate the 80s scene like Ozzy did by himself. Probably saved Ozzys life in the long run. Still a bad business decision.

@@donnareedfan that might be true. Still doesn't change the fact Ozzy has sold more records, played more shows and made more money. When you say Black Sabbath the majority of people think "Iron Man" not "Mob Rules" Black Sabbath played at OzzFest. I don't recall there being a Black Sabbath fest. Just like Hawkwing firing Lemmy. They both went on to bigger and better things and dwarfed their prior bands. Make all the excuses you want as to where, why and how. Sharon did this and Geezer did that, and if it wasn't for blah blah blah. Doesn't matter. Ozzy was a more successful act as a solo artist.

Ozzy singng on the riff is just a sign of inexperience and not being able to hear an alternate melody but there are times that it works and these are the times that it did. It does get old after a while hearing the singer singing the same as the riff. Dio come in with a fresh change and changed the direction of Sabbath. Some think for the good some don't. I never was crazy about Ronny James but you can't dent his vocal ability. Ozzy on the other hand has that special charisma about him when he performs and that's why he has become as big as his is. It's going to be a very sad day for all of music when Ozzy crosses over. His catalog spans at least 50 years so radio stations will be playing his music for weeks.

A lot of lead vocalists end up going back but apart from some one off shows Ozzy hasn’t needed Sabbath. Sabbath were great for 10 years but never captured those glory years again.

I’m an Ozzy fan, I’m not interested in Black Sabbath without Ozzy. It was too different. A friend said it was too happy, I agreed. My favorite album is Speak Of The Devil, that’s the one with Brad Gillis on guitar. The old Sabbath stuff was so much better that way.

Tony was saying how ozzy would only sing where he was comfortable,,,, well that is why Black Sabbath got so famous! With Dio ,,, Sabbath was lacking big time!!! It wasn’t Ozzy holding back Black Sabbath,,, it was Black Sabbath holding back Ozzy!!! Thanks to Sharon,,, Ozzy proved that,, and became one of the greatest metal bands of the 80s! While Sabbath kind of slipped into obscurity,,, except for the stuff done with Ozzy. In fact Ozzy is the only reason why his former band mates are still relevant.

I loved BS first 5 albums, I saw them in the early 70s music was good but their concert was lacking a show( just the band a lit up cross and a grave yard settig) music kicked ass though. I also saw blizzard of Oz, diary of a mad man & no more tears concerts ,what a difference, these were great exciting rock shows! I probably would of listened to Tony and his new band(s) more if they would of changed their name , to me they were just all right without the Oz

I'm just a stoner fan, and from this point of view Dio was a better Black Sabbath's singer than Ozzy. Whith Dio the music was richer. Tony Iommi explained it very well, Dio really composed his parts instead singing on the the riffs.

Although a "Master of Metal" Ozzy is not exactly the most reliable guy in the world as we've seen. Let's face it, without Sharon to hold the ship together Ozzy would have probably found a way to flake on Randy, Rudy and screw up his new Blizzard of Ozz band as well. (SABBATH RULES)

I love Dio, solo and with Sabbath, but it was a completely different sound with him as front man, and not just the vocals. Still, a much better replacement there than with Van Halen replacing Roth with Sammy Hagar. Never did like "Van Hagar" much; a couple of good jams I guess.

Sabbath should have NEVER LOOKED BACK! That is the biggest flaw that held the band back after 1984... chasing the Pop Star, Ozzy Osbourne. Should have stuck with Dio the 2nd time. BIG mistake!

when they unceremoniously got rid of ozzy I thought Sabbath was done . Ronnie dio came in and saved this legendary metal band . Ozzy was not in good condition as the other members too . Iommi butler and , ward were so FD up also. they cleaned up and made one hell of a comeback In heaven and hell and ozzy of course made Blizzard of oz . Randy Rhoads saves ozzys career also

Never Say Die had about 2 amazing songs on it and about 2 more that were somewhat tolerable. Anyone who thinks that this is a good quality Sabbath album obviously doesn't know much about the band and almost certainly hasn't heard their entire discography. It's definitely not as good as Technical Ecstasy. Enjoy it if you think you are rooting for the "Under-rated"
