Veracruz is a city with a complicated but interesting history - Hernan Cortez, the French and the Americans all made their initial landing here. It is also a city with very affordable alcohol, as I soon discovered.

@Sabbatical @7:30 I'm not from Veracruz, nor do I, admittedly, have any real world experience with such things... But to me, those looked suspiciously like bullet holes left from a firing squad. And not from just a single execution, either. The real question, to me, is not what are we looking at. But when was it made?
@defnotthekgb8362
@defnotthekgb8362 6 ай бұрын
@@remcovanvliet3018 you are correct, it is from the 1812 execution of 6 insurgents in Veracruz. probably from multiple firing squads(I also would not be surprised if some are newer, that is ALOT of holes for the execution of 6 people)

Im addicted to your videos. I ran across the one of your trip to Lagos and now I'm watching each one in order. (I've been to Lagos, Nigeria; Accra, Ghana; Teague, South Korea, and Fulda & Heidelberg Germany) Getting out of the US bubble is the best thing ever happened to me. 😊

I am also watching his videos in the "right" order right now. It's great that you were able to gain such wonderful experiences. I hope you had a great time here with us! I live near Heidelberg. It's always fascinating to me when people take the long way from abroad just to explore this little corner of our world. I can relate, though. Even the smallest American suburb would make the explorer in me jump 😊

On the external walls of the Baluarte de Santiago, the first Veracruz Insurgents were shot on July 29, 1812, six young men who, coordinated by the merchant Antonio Merino and instructed by General Ignacio Allende, began the independence insurrection in the city and port of Veracruz. You can still see the perforations of the rifle in the place.

The modern version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed in Veracruz... About the Vocho (VW Bug) that you intended to get into at the end, it was probably built in Mexico. A friend of mine had one with a built-in truck box on the back. I asked him if it was a '68, and he look at me strange, and said "no, its a '95"... What Woodrow Wilson demanded of the Mexicans to do and say during that invasion is pretty cringe worthy. But what do you want from the guy who brought Jim Crow Laws to the nation's capital, and then had the guts to say during his speech to convince Congress to declare war on Germany, "We need to make the world safe for democracy". I call that double mindedness "Jeffersonian Schizophrenia", many American presidents have suffered from it. He is also the guy who pushed the Sedition Act, where everyone who was against the war was put into prison. But it came to bite him in the butt, when after going to the conference at Versaille he came back to the US to push for Congress to ratify his League of Nations, he realized that he had put everyone who would want to help ratify all in prison. ¡Pinche pendejo!

I'm from Veracruz, el baluarte de Santiago usted to look a lot more like San Juan de Ulúa but they "restored it" by putting that horrible paint or wathever that beige thing is, I personally hated it cause I have such great memories around that place since my highschool is few blocks from there, honestly I don't know how come it got bullet marks but I don't think they are actual bullet shots, gov would have them covered immediately as Veracruz is a very touristic place. 🤔

I'm moving to a region in the US (Eastern Washington state) with a high Hispanic population so I've started teaching myself Spanish using Duolingo. So far it's working okay but I can tell I need to have conversations in Spanish or I will never learn to understand it when people are speaking quickly. Reading is fine but actually speaking it is kind of difficult.

Another battle that was pivotal with the American civil was with the French and Mexican armies was the 5th of May 1862, Battle of Puebla. The Mexicans won this battle, but lost the war with the French. This battle lost, helped prevent an alliance with the American Confederate south and the French, less help for the south, helped shorten the American civil war.
