Sabbioneta - parte 2: Chiesa della Beata Vergine Incoronata e Oratorio di San Rocco

La Chiesa dell'Incoronata, impreziosita dal severo mausoleo del duca, sul quale spicca la statua bronzea di Vespasiano eseguita da Leone Leoni, doveva fungere da cappella palatina e da pantheon della dinastia dominante. Per tale ragione venne affidata alla cura dei frati Serviti, presenti a Sabbioneta dal 1448.
Il caratteristico impianto ottagonale, volutamente in contrasto con i dettami del Concilio di Trento, ben si adatta ad ospitare un mausoleo. La Chiesa, edificata tra il 1586 e il 1588, custodisce infatti la tomba del duca, qui sepolto con il pendente del Toson d'Oro, la massima onorificenza cavalleresca che Imperatori e Re di Spagna concedevano a personaggi degni di lustro e onore.
Sorge su due preesistenti edifici di culto, il più antico dedicato a San Biagio (antico Patrono di Sabbioneta), il più recente intitolato a San Nicola, la cui memoria liturgica coincideva con il giorno del compleanno di Vespasiano, il 6 dicembre.
Nel 1592 al blocco ottagonale venne aggiunto il campanile ad avancorpo, con un portichetto a tre fornici (aperture).
L’Oratorio di S. Rocco, eretto nella metà del XVI secolo, da tempo sconsacrato, reca oggi i segni di successivi interventi: alcune modifiche strutturali avvenute nel XVII secolo hanno dato origine all’aspetto attuale, mentre nel XVIII secolo la realizzazione di suggestivi affreschi del pittore Giovanni Morini da Viadana ne ha impreziosito gli interni. L’oratorio della Chiesa ospita la pinacoteca del Polo Museale di Sabbioneta, con una ricca collezione di dipinti e opere d’arte che ripercorrono diverse epoche. The Church of the Incoronata, embellished by the severe mausoleum of the duke, on which the bronze statue of Vespasian by Leone Leoni stands out, was to serve as the palatine chapel and pantheon of the ruling dynasty. For this reason it was entrusted to the care of the Servite friars, present in Sabbioneta since 1448.
The characteristic octagonal layout, deliberately in contrast with the dictates of the Council of Trent, is well suited to hosting a mausoleum. The Church, built between 1586 and 1588, in fact houses the tomb of the Duke, buried here with the pendant of the Golden Fleece, the highest chivalric honor that the Emperors and Kings of Spain granted to figures worthy of prestige and honour.
It stands on two pre-existing buildings of worship, the oldest dedicated to San Biagio (ancient Patron Saint of Sabbioneta), the most recent dedicated to San Nicola, whose liturgical memory coincided with Vespasian's birthday, 6 December.
In 1592 the forepart bell tower was added to the octagonal block, with a small portico with three arches (openings).
The Oratory of S. Rocco, built in the mid-16th century, long deconsecrated, today bears the signs of subsequent interventions: some structural changes that occurred in the 17th century gave rise to its current appearance, while in the 18th century the creation of evocative frescoes by the painter Giovanni Morini da Viadana embellished the interiors. The oratory of the Church houses the art gallery of the Sabbioneta Museum Complex, with a rich collection of paintings and works of art that cover different eras.
