Trade unions failed SA workers big time we are lead by opportunist who only think about themselves not the workers problems, we been crying about salary increment and unfear labour practice by employer of (WRDM) for more than 20 years now in our municipality things are getting more and more bad for workers. Workers are going through depression and dying due to exploitation of workers and trade unions reps instead they are get promotion to management position. They are pushing they are own mandate not that of the workers, they are just helping the employer to exploit workers.

The promotion for the union representative is the same as lobbying in politics, we all know it is immoral and should be illegal but for those who write our laws.

Yes They only care about their needs. Just now, they ask unreasonable raise because of inflation. You could swear they are the only one's who bear the brunt of inflation

There should never be a crisis among those who legally represent workers! If so is true we are doomed.

Unions are the only reason business doesn't explicitly abuse workers. If unions have failed, it's only in not getting business to pay workers better wages.

Unions can also serve as a way to prevent workers from higher wages if the union has been bought out but pretends to fight the business, the bought out union can even block further unionisation by workers. I am not sure if we are not fighting to keep wages low.

@@shafiyaalgiquadra1105 that's a fair point. I agree, the politicization of unions is something to be weary of. But people who seek to crush unions use this and other shortcomings to say "no unions at all". And I think this is what people should fight against. Anything preventing the organization of workers is backward, whether it's business or union leaderships themselves.

What's up with socialism/communism/comrades or whatever, are we so lame that we can't strike new phenomenon to exist, survive and prosper within the current context? Truth be told unions have very little to show for in the last ten years, that which is historical is in fact historical, what is the reviewable target in the next ten years? Mr Vavi is an absolute in and out unionist, period!

Unions get paid when you go hungry ,so think about that , when you told to go on strike , they don't loose any money but you do .

The problem in the South African economy is NOT (like you claim), employers who hire and fire employees on a whim... The problem is that they can NOT hire and fore employees on a whim.... If the labour laws were less stringent, many more people would be investing in setting up businesses in South Africa, creating the millions of jobs we so desperately need...

Can you understand how capitalists have worsened working conditions under the fear of unemployment already in our economy, can you see how making it even more convenient to fire someone will likely lead to even more horrendous working conditions? Are you advocating for better working conditions as you advocate for firing on a whim? Ofcourse not☺️
