This is a symptom rather than a cause. The real cause is that there are more workers than there are jobs. There is a 42% unemployment rate. When there are more jobs than there are workers, a lot of malpractice around employment dissipates. The government needs to provide an environment where investors want to invest to build factories and farms that provide jobs. South Africa doesn't have that. The infrastructure is not conducive to investing money in the country. See Eskom. Without reliable electricity, there is no point in opening for business, particularly within the hospitality industry. Taxes collected by SARS are either squandered on things like massive parliamentary staffing or by corruption and nepotism, so even teachers and nurses are being retrenched. Fix the causes rather than dealing with the symptoms.

But I didn't take it too seriously until a few weeks later I saw it was open again but obviously still being renovated. So I walked in and introduced myself to the new owner and explained that I had been a regular under the old owners. 'Come through into the kitchen,' he invited. So I did. The old appliances had been ripped out. They weren't cleanable, he told me. The rest of the kitchen made me almost throw up where I stood...

What Wendy is saying would be an ideal situation but it is not what is happening. For example; there is no agreement between a waiter and there employer, the employer tells you how much commission you will be paid as a waiter. From that commission, you still have to pay for breakages whether you reach the minimum wage or not.
@karabomophiring42273 ай бұрын
Correct. The restaurant employers use the commission-based system to bypass labour laws. That industry is highly extractive and exploitative.

@PhillipDlulane3 ай бұрын
I don't understand why you say I am lying 😅😅. Let me break it down for you, I earn 2% commissions of my total sales for the day plus tips. I pay R10 breakages for a R1000 in sales that I make for that particular shift. Now look for an example; if I make R 1500 sales for the whole shift, that means I get about R20 commission and from that, they take R10 for breakages then I'm left with R10 plus my tip. Now tell me who can stand for 10 hours for R10? And that is excluding my tips

Their card tips are kept by the restaurant and a percentage is paid to the waitrons at the end of the month. At the end of the month, the card tips are paid to them. Gr9 exit certificate was a death sentence for future jobs for kids growing up. Connected to that most companies can clearly not make a profit if they have to continues train staff meant to be ready to go. A workshop or training facility is a seperate expense vs. a full time employees expectations. SAs 30% education makes our foreign neighbours and overseas job seekers look far more appealing as 80% pass rates are just a fakeout to the true reality of SA kids poor results = poor employee choices. Students protesting and entitlements at universities just puts a fat no on next years employment opportunities. 50% BEE and 30% shares apartheid agendas = lower employment numbers and a cut in profits, but a more stable company with less pitfalls and probabilities of racial/union/qouta issues. More companies started creating anti-union contracts. Unions have been on a mean streak of getting rid of the staff they suppose to protect. No better anti union than a non SA. For me It’s a combination of things, some of which stem from our history of apartheid in South Africa. Yes home affairs needs to do better in managing undocumented immigrants, the Employment and Labour Department need to do more in regulating and ensuring companies are complaint with the laws they have set up, because people will always try cutting corners white or black. Associations like RASA need to be more diligent and develop a sense of pride when doing business. Because I can tell you now if we’d go to their website under the “about section” they surely speak of values and visions they stand by of which is questionable But my real issue here is a lack of patriotism. I’m sorry to say but majority of white South Africans can’t even differentiate whether you’re a black South African or not, I don’t know if it’s ignorance or what. Because I may not always be correct but I am able to identify, maybe it’s just me by simply looking at physical features and listening for tone in acsent that this person is South African and which tribe he or she may belong too. Now unfortunately having a CEO who isn’t in tune with such things or has little to no understanding of the 13 different languages or cultures will have no clue whether things are going wrong and so the blame game continues all at the expense of the vulnerable society. We all need to do better and protect the resources of our beautiful country. Human beings move and migrate to different places looking for better opportunities and that we can’t change. why should waiters collect the tip on behalf of the entire restaurants effort . Pass a law that all tips must he collected and shared between all restaurant staff and we will solve this problem … then hear how waiters will beg to work with no basic and offer polish the owners shoes to go back to the time they controlled his restaurant earnings

Again Mr Pillay let me tell you something. As waiters, we might get the same training but we are not the same; therefore, certain guests will tend to tip one waiter more than the other. I feel that everyone should get what is due to him/her.

what the restaurant pay is more than social grants. How about the fat salaried labour officers, applying labour laws to increase social grants to R 20,000 per person per month.

No need, the jobs vacated by the foreigners will go back to South Africans who did those jobs perfectly well before.

@@Tinker8531 There have always been foreigners doing low paid jobs like waiters and cleaners, for as long as I can remember. Where have you been living? This is nothing new.

😡I have to call out BUTCHER BOYS umhlanga Durban as the WORST OWNER(we had a personal encounter with HER), she demands you tip the waiter in full the percentage of your bill(irrespective of the signage on the table stating you can tip at your own discretion) she under pays them and its your responsibility to compensate for that....i was so highly pregnant and ,her exact words was "its fine that we don't come back if we unhappy with the tipping story) we dont consume alcohol, dont even know what the bartender look like and was told he needed to be tipped as well 😦🫣
