I would absolutely recommend it. I still run it, and for the price, I am not sure there is a better option available.

Can this shoot cheap surplus ammo?

This is a great question. It does appear that surplus ammo will cause some issues for this trigger pack. With maybe 25% of my surplus rounds I am getting firing pin strikes on the primer with no ignition, with all of them firing on the second try. Surplus ammo is known for having the harder primers, but still, not ideal for a self defense situation.
