So here's a funny story! While finishing my video, I decided to call the number on ZGE's website. I got to chat with Jonny Gorden (the guy who made the salamander model) and we spoke for a bit about his time working on Gaither's Pond. He told me that Benjy and his team hired him to make some models but they never fully utilized them because they ran low on their funds. If I recall correctly, Benjy wanted the assets for a new version of Gaither's Pond but that never happened. So yeah! That's the story behind ZGE and Jonny's time with Team Gaither. Bengi actually went to my college as a guest speaker once, and the college had a museum exhibit about his family and their accomplishments. He’s actually a pretty nice guy from what I saw of him, and he openly joked about the bad quality of his animations. As a life long Christian myself, I’ve noticed there’s this odd mindset that you can’t criticize Christian entertainment as if it’s a form of blasphemy or something, which is totally ass-backwards to me because if anything you would think that would give them initiative to hold it to a higher standard! But this attitude has caused this kind of media to be a breeding ground for really terrible music, movies or, well... THIS!

I remember Gaither's Pond from back in the day and never really gave it a thought, but now I see that indeed it is badly done. Christian media should not be exempt from criticism. They genuinely need to make their offerings better and accessible to both Christian and secular media.

I used to watch this one episode of Gaithers pond on VHS, i think, it was the only episode we had. The only things that I remembered from when I was a kid was the bird drowning(?) and the weird seduction thing. This is such a blast from the past!

I would actually pay stupid amounts of money for an anime version of Serenity. It's the perfect mix of detached cringe and a genuinely heartfelt attempt to spread faith via a fairly cliched yet heartfelt story. At the very least it's way more genuine than this trash. Here's the thing: Christians like to think that they're cool and hip to the time they're living in. They're not. They have a mistaken impression that they can use media like the kids are enjoying nowadays, like 3-D animated movies, to get their message across. They can't. Add in the fact that most of them don't have high-tier technical educations that would allow them to animate or program something like this, along with their over-exuberance at getting out their message and tone-deafness to the awful cringeworthiness of their work and... yeah, you get this.

Honestly, I feel like Bill Gaither (The voice of the Bull Frog) and J.D. Sumner (The Voice of the Crawdad) could be very effective narrators for a Horror Television series based on some folklore. Those deep voices combined with some effective writing with some of the absolutely most disturbing stories (The Jersey Devil is something that could really work with this) would be amazing stuff on Netflix. Also, I just found out that a Reboot of this series was recently released in 2021. I would suggest praying but to do so would imply God is still alive even after all these unholy acts disguised as "Films" were commited.

Pretty confident he didn’t go with the other studio’s animation because they wanted money. :P A lot of these Christian programs often look cheap and and messy is because they were clearly done on a cheap budget. Ah, I had a big grin on my face watching this! THIS is what I remember watching as a child, alongside Veggietales, The Prince of Egypt, and a couple other Christian based animated stuff I can't remember the names of on VHS (one was about a group of archeologists who accidentally were sent to the Biblical times by finding ancient writing on a wall and having adventures, one was taking place in Biblical Rome at the time of Emperor Nero and dealt with the family of a Christian baker trying to eventually escape Rome, and the last one was basically just retelling various Bible stories whilst being hosted by an angel). Of them all, The Prince of Egypt and Veggietales were my favorites, and honestly while I can see why The Lure Depths is bad, I couldn't help but smile nostalgically as it all came back, even from just the song snippets you showed. Ok Saber, sorry for the long comment on a 2 year old video that you’re never going to read. But I used to have this VHS growing up! Me and my older sister (we were probably like 5 and 3 at the time) had gotten it as a gift from our very Christian grandmother. We had about 3-4 movies to watch and a shit ton of veggie tales episodes. But this show, oh god this show. How it scarred me and my sister for a very long time. I could watch up to the point where guppie was with that three eyed fish, and then I’d just loose it. I would literally run away and cry, the music, the odd character models, 3 year old me would have nothing to do with it. Even after finding it again and watching it I had to pause is because my heart rate went way up and my brain went into fight or flight! Haha just wanted to say that there were a few of us who actually experienced it as kids and it was legit traumatizing.

I know that these Christian animated movies don't look the best, but saying God has left us is not true. Jesus is always there for us, even if we don't see Him. He has seen our mistakes, He knows our struggles, and He wants the best for us. But because people don't want to believe in a God at all, they write Him off as a fairy tale and call it a day.
