Fun fact Gary Oldman, the VA for Ruber, actually downed a few shots before doing his lines in order to be more in touch with the insanity of Rubers character. And I say he succeeded with flying colors.

Listen blunt force trauma to the head actually can cause blindness, so its actually pretty accurate for him to have lost his vision from a horse kicking him in the face

I'm glad someone addressed this! It has to be noted that when someone suffers a blow to the head, their brain is damaged both where they're hit AND the opposite side since their brain smashes into their own skull. Since he was kicked in the face, his brain would move backwards as well and potentially damage his occipital lobe :(

Quite frankly, depending on where the hoof/hooves hit, it's a wonder he's not also deaf in one or both ears, considering the amount of oomph that goes into a horse's kick and how incredibly fragile the bones in human ears are. 😱😱

In this case, it would be the momentum being transferred through and sending his brain slamming into the back of his brain case, which would still damage the occipital lobe.

I liked the fact that Garrett wasn't magically cured of his blindness by the end of the movie either. The same way that I liked that the MLP movie didn't cure Tempest's horn. Those elements became part of who they are, and things like this in real life can't be magically cured, only adjusted to. And alot of people have even become stronger (like Garrett and Tempest) as a result of adjusting, and not letting it or anything stand in their way of their self love and hapiness.

People think I'm crazy when I insist that Celine Dion's The Prayer originated in this movie. Of course it doesn't really help when I also say "I hear this song and think of a girl on horseback being chased into a forbidden forest by ogres made entirely of household objects riding on hogs in the dead of night while her mother is held hostage by Gary Oldman." LOL

I think what I like about Kayley is that she is what I call an ordinary hero. In so many stories you have these amazing badass heroes who fight their enemies left and right but the heroes of this story are just normal people like you and me. People often complain how Kayley isn't good at fighting despite her training, but they fail to realize that training for a fight and actually being in a fight are two different things because in a real fight they could actually lose their lives, and that is why I connect with the heroes of this story because at the end of the day they are normal people but even after surviving these encounters they continue trying to save Camelot. And in all honesty just attempting to standup to evil is heroic.

also to be fair, she never really trained. She was a country farm girl who THOUGHT she trained to be a knight and THOUGHT she was good enough/could do it because she held fanciful ideals. but she was never ever properly trained and was just a kid playing pretend until life took a threatening turn. She was forced to acknowledge that she really didnt know what she was doing and her mother was right, something she refused to believe was true since she villianized her mother and idolized her father. But her mother continued to believe in her despite her concerns which gave Kaylee the opportunity to grow and find her place

It's far from a perfect film, but I can't help but love it. It's fun to watch, it makes me happy. And even if our protagonist feels lacking to many, Kaylee was my idol when I was a little girl. I only ever had the movie because my grandma found it in a cheap DVD bin and thought Kaylee looked like me. This movie is always going to hold a special place in my heart. I used to sing "On My Father's Wings" for my dad on Father's Day, and it brought him to tears every time. Even if the bulk of my love comes from nostalgia, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's flawed, but it's charming and entertaining, and that shows in how many people have endeared it to themselves.

I just found some early concept art, and Holy Crap. The difference between 1995 Lynette and 1998 Kaylee is astounding. There is so much personality and character in those early drawings. Lynette's face is more mature, less soft. Her eyes are larger, like Crysta in "Ferngully." She looks like a character who could actually kick someone's ass. Not at all like the generic Barbie doll that is Kaylee.

My friend, you have done me the great service of allowing me to know there was concept artwork for this movie on the internet, My eyes have been blessed and I am so angry we were robbed of this slightly darker looking flick! And also short haired Kayley/Lynette. I LOVE that look! I mean yes don't get me wrong the Kayley we grew up with is still one of my childhood blorbos I would die for but the fact we had a cute looking female without the long Disney princess esque locks would have been rad! I guess WB said no cause the dolls wouldn't sell without longer hair or smth

After rewatching this on KZbin, I had musical whiplash in the beginning. They jammed about 5 songs in the first 30 minutes. One song right after the other. However, “I Stand Alone” will always have a place in my heart and be the reason I come back to this movie. Randy Woodman did that song justice.

Forgive me for nitpick. Instead of talking about being a knight, Kaylee should've shown action. Have her train as a knight growing up while her mother is against her daughter being one. The scenario is done many times, but it can still work.
@Scrofar
@Scrofar Жыл бұрын
agreed. She doesn't have to be GOOD at combat but still capable enough to show she can take care of herself. Example: in the early prologue, her father teaches her an important lesson or morale while spending time with her skipping stones. As time flashes forward to the present, Kaylee is still practicing skipping stones, and her aim and precision has significantly improved over time. Then maybe when she's fleeing from the goons, she grabs a stone and aims it at the head of the lead goon, then knocking them down in a domino effect. Setup, committing to the setup, payoff. This could even happen again by aiming a stone at Ruber's head to get his attention away from the king or Garrett or something. Maybe even have a scene in the middle where she picks some apples and tosses one at Garrett, and then engage in a fun silly baseball bonding moment. Kaylee at times is shown to have some wit, but there is not enough to prove her capability, or any reason to really root for her. She's otherwise inadequate, and her personality is pretty bland.
@wolvie1618
@wolvie1618 Жыл бұрын
Well for one, not many women became knights, if any at all. In the beginning when they show the knights of the round table, all of them were men. Kaylee only became a knight because of finding the sword and helping lead to Ruber's defeat. That aside, who would have trained her? Her father died at a young age, and knighthood training takes years, well into adulthood. She did not have a mentor to teach her, and making any attempt to have someone else teach her probably would have failed. Her mother's influence also would have played a major part in this as well, her husband had died because he was a knight, and she likely would have tried her best to keep Kaylee from meeting the same fate by actively discouraging her and having her focus more on farm work.

I remember there was a point sometime in 1999 where I was absolutely infatuated with "Quest for Camelot" (or as its known where I am, "The Magic Sword: Quest for Camelot"). I'd watch our newly-acquired VHS of the film over and over and at one point, I found out that my local cinema were showing the film as a Saturday morning "Movies for Juniors" screening (kids films, animated or otherwise, would end up in that timeslot at the cinema long after their original theatrical runs were done by at least half-a-year up to a few years). I was so pumped to see the film at our local cinema that when we came back? I put our VHS copy on to rewatch all over again. x) Not to mention the few sleepless nights where in an attempt to pacify me, I'd watch our VHS copy way later into the night than I should be... ...and the real kicker? Sure, I was indeed a child then but...I'm British. This glossy, American film that's wildly loose with its story origins in British folklore hit me at the right time and as someone raised by Renissaunce-era Disney, I ate that up so hard. xD Juuuust a pity about the R word used in the film that I found when I revisited, that's featured here...and the fact the staff of the animation studio were worked to the bone because of predictably desperate and bad exec meddling. Oh well, it was fun see you two take a revisit to this anyhoo~

The one thing I never liked about this film is that the gryphon wasn't given a name. Ruber gave the _experimental chicken-axe_ a name, but never bothered to name what's presumably a lifelong companion. They could have given him an extra-intimidating name to further offset that adorable little voice, but noOoOo.... (Also, for those who don't know, the Sunny & Cher song Devon and Cornwall lyric-drop while cosplaying the duo is "I got you Babe", better known as the song that kicks off every single morning in the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day!)

I absolutely love this movie. My love comes from nostalgia mostly, knowing that this film is far from good, but I still see a lot of value in it. - For example, nobody mentions how cool the world design is in this version of the Arthurian legend. It looks rustic and kind of mysterious, with it's Stonehenge-like, crude buildings and misty atmosphere. - The Excalibur looks frickin' gorgeous!! I have not seen such an elegant concept for the look of the weapon. All the other designs for this weapon in pop culture are all too fancy looking or just too boring. This one hits the right spot, at least in my opinion. - The story is mostly bland and predictable, but there are some really neat things there that I appreciate. How the shared arc of the blind man and the naive girl prove the concept of Arthur's vision about unity against the fierce competence of a selfish individual. Ruber is stronger, has more men, has more power, but still cannot combat the united effort of those two. While Ruber shapes the world around himself he forces his will on others and cannot learn from his blunders throughout the movie. Kayley and Garrett however learn from each other, shape each other willingly and become better people through collaboration (the romantic thread was unnecessary though). - The story arc of the chicken...yes the metal chicken was to show how even cowardly people would want to eventually rise against the tyranny of their opressors, the kind of tyranny Ruber represents. - Ruber is just such a nice villain. He is the kind of mad, nonsenical villain that fits animation so well... Plus Gary Oldman... Plus he's also secretly a Jojo character. THANK YOU for watching this. Brightened my day. While I love this movie, I know it's not very good. Still. I'd watch it again and again. My love for all things medieval probably comes from this.
@ninavale.
@ninavale. Жыл бұрын
the romantic thread is there bc a) dinsney envy and well it was in the book they've very, very loosely adapted it from...King's Damosel...and seems to be like a mash of 'events that lead to it' and some of the events of it. Gareth is a mix of Gareht of Orkney(the character in the original legend and Lynette's first love who in the legend and start pf the book marries her sister-Lyonesse whose castle is besieged by Red Knight) and Lucius a blind guy from the book with whom the main character(Lynette) falls in love with.

Fun fact, President Teddy Roosevelt went blind in one eye from being punched in the face really hard during a boxing match. He kept it a secret for quite a while. So yeah, being hit in the face can cause blindness.

If you guys are interested, theres this show i recall called Animalia. Its based a book i guess, while the 3d animation is quite dated, it actually has a pretty decent plot, with fun characters and moments.

"The falcon fucks this guy up." Proving his chops before he got into the Marvel movies. Okay, but seriously, a peregrine falcon's dive-bombing strategy lets them go up to 200 MPH and they've evolved to not be harmed by the force of the impact, so I totally buy a falcon being a serious nuisance for even a griffin.

The way they animated Ruber was so perfect. The eye twitches, the lazy eye rolling a bit. His gaze always seeming distant, the overgrown fingernails, the cocky strut, then even at his death he's chuckling as he dies. They animated a perfect psychopath. There is no "Oh he's just misunderstood". No everything they do tells you there's something not right about him.
