Just a great artist. I have watched almost every great flamenco & classical guitarists, past to present. I must admit that Sabica's fingering technique is second to none. There is just no weakness there. He's just legend among legends.

Concertante flamenco, as played here by Sabicas, was the death of flamenco. Flamenco is the cuadro: singer, dancer, guitarist and handclapper on the street corner. Often gypsy but not always (Paco Pena was non-gitano but came from a traditional flamenco family in Cordoba and learnt to play at six). Presenting flamenco as a concertante, pseudo-classical art form certainly earned a lot of money for Sabicas and indeed for others later like Paco De Lucia, but is the excitement there? Sabicas moved to America in the wake of the Spanish civil war as indeed did others like the great gypsy dancer Carmen Amaya (and who can blame them? After all, the poet Lorca paid with his life by staying behind). But it was easier to earn a big pay packet by playing solo for adoring Western audiences more attuned to classical music than from the uninhibited, blood-racing, spontaneous outbursts of flamenco on the street corners of Triana in Seville. I have a CD on Harmonia Mundi which has collected rare sides owned by collectors which feature Sabicas and Amaya and her family. The sleeve note writers say that because of the rarity of these tracks it's difficult to know on which ones Amaya is dancing or singing, but Sabicas is credited with accompaniment on eight of the fifteen tracks and quite honestly he sounds like any other accompanying guitarist, although of course excellent in "a ritmo y a compas" and technical execution. But to me, this is the essence of flamenco. Viva la cuadro! So OK, I'm not a modern incarnation of whoever shouted "Judas!" at Bob Dylan when he went electric, and I've watched You Tube and picked up and apprciated many modern ensembles using cajon or even flute, double bass and violin. But in the end my test is always "did it excite me?" I'm afraid that concertante doesn't.

@@superfly19751 Absolutely wrong! Segovia begun with flamenco. He joined El Festival de cante jondo wanted by Falla and Llorca playing also some flamenco. He loved "pure flamenco", blaming any sort of contamination.

Paco to Sabicas is like Beethoven to Mozart. All of them are the greatest. The romanticism of younger composers from older ones is obvious. Beethoven romanticizes classical music like Paco romanticizes Flamenco guitar. Therefore no one is better than the other. They're all great in their own way and it's unfair to compare when they brought two different delicacies. It's only a matter of preference. Such as some people like fish more than Beef, or chicken, but it's unfair to say what is better. Because it's a matter of preference and every person or race is unique to what is their favorite food.
