Thanks for the thorough video. The product page even on Sabrant and Amazon were very vague on the power adapter included and didn’t show it in the online pictures. I’m glad to see they included the Molex adapter to be able to read an old IDE with Molex - and that you tested and it was capable of spinning the power hungry IDE up and reading it.

A real handy piece of kit to have! I have a similar one but USB 2. It also has e-sata which only works with the sata port. Ouch with that T42 drive! :)

Yeah, I heard that and wasn't surprised given the rough shape the rest of that laptop was in.

I have a generic USB 2.0 adapter that I bought many years ago. It works fine. Sometimes for 3.5 IDE drives, you have to set the jumper to master.
@LaptopRetrospective3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I figured the jumpers might be a factor. Man, there are some things I just don't miss.

I have a few USB 2.0 cable/adapters like this, including an NCIX branded one. If you write to a drive connected to it, make sure you use something like Teracopy, which verifies (compares checksums) the writes. All the ones I have will result in unmatching checksums when writing large files (i.e. sustained writing). Reading from drives connected via cable was not an issue, though.

Solid advice.

I think the USB 3 ones are generally okay, with better chipsets. At least that's what I vaguely remember from comments I've read back in the day. I do have an SATA to USB3 cable and haven't been getting errors all the time. I have to admit, I forgot about this problem until watching this video! But with Teracopy and Xyplorer (both have free options), no reason for me to copy/move files without verifying.

ah, ncix (netlink computer inc)! too bad they went out of business in 2017, yet another victim to amazon & newegg :(

For 2.5" IDE drives make sure you don't connect the drive the other way around, the connector on the adapter side should have one of the holes covered or some mark that indicates the orientation, otherwise you risk damaging the hard drive. I know some cheap adapters don't have this mark, maybe the one in the video does.
@LaptopRetrospective3 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it's good to go, it can only plug in one way.

I've been planning to get something like this for quite a while. Had the money put aside, and trying to pick the best one. Then, my tablet died, and changed my plans, lol.
@LaptopRetrospective3 жыл бұрын
Ahh, that's unfortunate. Now you've got to replace a tablet?

@@LaptopRetrospective I decided not to get a new tablet. But Samsung stores backups in a proprietary format, so they can't be accessed via PC. Stuff like notes and calendar info. I'm hoping to get something used I can access my backup with.

I mean, reviews can be their own challenge. Sometimes you have to look at how they are written too.
