I admire Sam's amazing story of recovery, but also that he didn't seem overly impressed or fazed by other major leaguers,probably because,as he said in the interview, he didn't even know who the players were.

I'm skeptical of Sam's comment that he faced Joe Namath and Mike Ditka in high school. There was about four years difference between the two. Ditka reached the NFL in 1961 and Namath reached the AFL in 1965.
