Opposition leader Peter Dutton has called on Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to “resign” or for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to “sack him” over “grave concern” at the mass release of detainees following the High Court ruling.
On November 8, the High Court ruled against a 20-year precedent which enabled the indefinite detention of foreigners who could not be deported, which allowed for the release of three murderers and several sex offenders.
Mr Dutton sought to move a motion in the House which expressed “grave concern that the Albanese government's catastrophic handling of the NZYQ High Court case has resulted in the mass release of hardened criminals from detention into the Australian community.”
“The government released child rapists, murderers, sex offenders, people smugglers, drug dealers and outlaw motorcycle members … many of these criminals are repeat offenders and are almost certain to re-offend,” Mr Dutton said during Question Time on Thursday.
“The Minister for Immigration has now released 142 highly dangerous individuals when the High Court’s full reasons make clear he was only required to release the applicant, NZYQ.
“[The motion] calls on the Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs to resign or for the Prime Minister to enforce accountability and to sack him.”
